NL
Wow did I cry right when I saw the game come back on and Guthrie warming up on the mound. Tell me this: HOW, when every person in the stands EXPECTS you to go out and give up a home run because you suck so much, can you just go ahead and do it anyways. Man, do I hate Guthrie. Him, Veres, and Alfonseca should all be sent to Detroit where they belong. I don't want to see ANY of them even WARMING UP! Put in Cruz or Estes. Please. Now, tonight is such a huge game. It's my 18th birthday today, and the only thing that will make it complete is for Prior not just to beat the Marlins, but completely shut them down. There are so many people CONVINCED that Prior is going to get eaten alive. Why, you ask? Because the Marlins are a contact hitting team. They don't just swing to hit home runs, they work the count and put the ball in play. I realize this and agree that the Marlins are a far superior matchup against Prior/Wood than the Braves were, but even so. Mark Prior went 10 and 1 in the 2nd half of the season. Are you trying to tell me that he never played a contact hitting team? He's been going out and shutting down teams one way or the other. I want NOTHING more than for Prior to go out there and own the Marlins 100%, just so I can go to school tomorrow and shove it in their face because "Hey, I know nothing about baseball." ![]() AL I'm so psyched up about the Cubs right now that I don't have the mindset to break down this series. I want the Red Sox to win by far though. Him, Veres, and Alfonseca should all be sent to Detroit where they belong. Don't be too harsh on Alfonseca, he's actually been really good since the end of August. I know he's easy to hate because of what he's done to us in the past, but out of our bullpen he's pitched as good as anyone since September started, and I'd much rather see him come into the game than Guthrie or Veres (I'm sorry, I didn't even really like seeing them coming in with a nine run lead.) Can't go to Estes, though, he's not on the roster (I can't believe they didn't switch him and Guthrie after the Division series. Hopefully Dusty sees the light before the next round.) Wow, was today just one hell of a day or what? But oh hey...I didn't get to see any of it!
![]() So the Cubs have all but cemented their way to the World Series. Beautiful. Dontrelle Willis was just plain terrible. I mean, it's one thing to get completely rocked by another team's bats, but when you go and just walk the game away there's nothing you can say. Another romping. Hopefully, I'll be able to change my work hours and that'll be the last Cubs game I miss. Prior to the start of the NLCS: "The Marlins pitching ranks right up there with the Cubs so don't count them out no matter who's on the mound for the Cubs" Let's hear it for that collective 10.30 ERA (or whatever) of Marlins pitching! And man was that a wild game at Fenway. Pedro blows a 2-0 lead, gets mad at himself, and then decides to throw a ball at [ ]Garcia's head. Then in the bottom half, Manny Ramirez was just waiting for ANYTHING that he could start a big thing over. On every one of those first 3 pitches, he was leaning back expecting to get hit. That's gotta really suck though being a hitter in that position. Having to go out there and stand in the batter's box when you KNOW, or very highly expect, the pitcher is going to just chuck the ball straight at you. No wonder the Red Sox couldn't get a hit. Now, on to the great bench clearing brawl. The pitch Manny went off about wasn't even that bad a pitch, just a little high. No matter, the benches clear, the fans go crazy, and we have trouble just waiting to happen. For who knows why, Don Zimmer decides he has the youthful strength, at 72, to charge Pedro Martinez. Not very smart on his part, but that doesn't take ANYTHING away from how out of line Pedro was for grabbing him and tossing him to the ground. Not cool. It was a great game, with the Yanks coming out on top in the post game shadows. I sure hope the Red Sox come back after this. I'd love to see this series just spin out of control. Fun Fun! Then the wounded winner can play the well rested Cubbies for the World Series of all World Series's. ![]() This post has been edited by Tidu-who on 12th October 2003 07:04 -------------------- The clouds ran away, opened up the sky And one by one I watched every constellation die And there I was frozen, standing in my backyard Face to face, eye to eye, staring at the last star I should've known, walked all the way home To find that she wasn't here, I'm still all alone -Atmosphere "Always Coming Back Home to You" |

Pedro has ALWAYS done that. Whenever he gets frustrated or gets smacked up for some runs, he throws a first pitch brushback. He's a loose canon when it comes to that. Karim Garica had every right to be pissed off if he's going to be throwing a 90+ mph fastball at your head. It wasn't that smart of Martinez when Karim was walking back to his dugout and pointing to his head like "Next time, I won't miss." or something. Zimmer and Posada had words with Pedro from the bench. And let me just say that Manny Ramirez was scared of Roger Clemens and wanted to get him thrown out, my bet. Because that pitch was pretty much over the plate, not even anywhere inside. Benches clear. And Zim wanted a piece of Pedro, that's for sure, but he was also protecting his pitcher because Pedro was supposedly going to look for Roger. And I don't care if Don Zimmer was going to attack you, you just DON'T attack someone that old and given his health issues. And the people here are SO divided on who's to blame. Every Boston fan was like "Well it's Zimmer's own fault for going after him. He got what he deserved, blah blah blah..." while all the New York fans want to see Pedro suspended for the rest of the series for attacking a guy that friggin old. And then what was the deal with the groundskeeper guy jumping in the bullpen. They're calling the groundskeeper the victim in his thrashing by Jeff and Karim. So they're going to press charges for him getting beaten up. YOu know why I bet it is though... because the game was in Boston. If the game had been in the Bronx and a Boston fan did that, there isn't a chance that charges are thrown. Again, divided amongst the different fans on this. Boston fans think that Karim and Jeff should be suspended while New York fans think he deserved what he got.
It goes to show you how deep this rivalry is... It's not just a baseball game when these two play... it's a battle on a warfield..... and the Yankees are winning the war. and if it was a Cubs/BoSox series, that should be the only world series where there shouldn't be a winner.... at all... like... a bomb will explode or a black hole sucks in the earth or something... i mean, it seems like neither team could or should win a world series. I mean, what makes the Cubs and the RedSox such popular teams? That they're lovable losers... haven't won in nearly a century... But as it were, i'd much rather want the Cubbies to win vs. the Red Sox. In fact, because of New York fanaticism, I'd be fine and content if the Red Sox never won again. Or if they happened to made it to the series, I'd LOVE to see another Bill Buckner-esque screw up that results in no championship. I would die a happy man. ![]() -------------------- "When I turn the page The corner bends into the perfect dog ear As if the words knew I'd need them again But at the time, I didn't see it." ~"This Ain't a Surfin' Movie" - Minus the Bear |

They haven't won the series just yet, DP. They have to come back to Chicago and beat both Prior and Wood at home. If they can do that, they deserve it more than we do. But I have faith in our superstars.
I'm totally on the Zim man's side on that one. All Cubs fans gotta have a soft spot for the man that last took us to the NLCS. I felt like the yanks were wrong on the whole groundskeeper thing, though. You gotta understand that the guys who work in the home stadium are still going to root for their team, and that doesn't justify a beating. Wow, Wakefield has been impressive this series. I think he has to be the MVP if the BoSox win it. Though I picked Florida to win it, I think that series will go to the Cubs now, but it will still go to game 7. Florida's bats will come alive tomorrow and it will be a high-scoring game. Prior is not inhuman, he has to lose a game SOMETIME...if he doesn't, the AL champion is in trouble in the World Series.
![]() Boston and New York, wow. What a series. Today's game was good for both teams (although obviously much better for Boston) since they were able to get all the horrible stuff from game 3 out of their systems. That rivalry is too much. I think Boston will go up 3-2 after tomorrow's game (Lowe vs. Wells, GREAT matchup), but I still think they'll have to take it to game 7 to win it. It irritates me when people say "Yankees suck" because they DON'T suck, they're an amazing team, and it's a great feat when a team defeats them, particularly in the playoffs. People complain way too much "blah blah blah omfg they BOUGHT their team" and while it's true their payroll is like 39473297x more than the rest of the teams, whining isn't going to get your team past them, and you should be proud of your team when (if) they beat them. And now I'm just rambling in favor of the Yankees, so obviously I need to stop. -------------------- Hey, put the cellphone down for a while In the night there is something wild Can you hear it breathing? ![]() ![]() ![]() I don't care how old that kid was, someone should have friggin been there to tell him "don't touch that ball" and pull him away. It's these stupid bandwagon jumpers that don't know a thing about baseball, but come to games anyway because everyone else was saying the Cubs were doing well, so they said "oh, let's buy playoff tickets," then they go without knowing a damn thing and touch balls they shouldn't touch (I'm sorry, a true fan who knew any rules of baseball not only would have not touched the ball, they would have pulled back any fans that would have attempted to touch the ball.) *sigh... Five more outs. That's all we needed. Two more outs, really. And in a sense, Prior got them. Alou should have caught that ball, then Gonzalez should have made that routine play. But they didn't, and the floodgates opened. Just like 1984. Maybe we really are cursed. They better go out and put all that crap behind them tomorrow, or there's going to be a whole city full of very depressed people very soon. clarification: I'm not mad at the fan himself, I would have done the same thing if I was his age, but I wish someone with some sense had yelled as soon as it was hit that way to let the ball go if Alou had a shot at it. Well, for one he isn't a kid. Look at him! On espn.com right now. He looks about 30 and has glasses. I just can't believe this. That was the complete turning point. How did that happen? It seemed like in a matter of 5 minutes it went from 3 to 0, almost assured victory. All of the sudden it's 8 to 3. How? It's that damn curse. My faith in the Cubs was severely shaken tonight. I'm just so lost. If they don't win tomorrow, I'll never hear the end of it. Chicago will never hear the end of it. I can't wait until next year.

It's easy to blame the fan, but it wouldn't have been an easy play to make, regardless. And that was just one place for Florida to get back into that game...the missed double play was another chance, and really, too many of those runs were scored when there were two outs. There are a lot of places to put the blame for that inning, but you can't deny that the Marlins played a great inning with what they were given.
Btw, the guy was 26 and was escorted out of Wrigley by security. Not because he interfered with the game, as the ball was clearly going over the stands and he did not reach over, but for his own safety, as people were chucking beers at him, cursing at him, telling him he cost them the world series. -------------------- Hey, put the cellphone down for a while In the night there is something wild Can you hear it breathing? I would like to make a note of something. Every time that I've watched a Marlins game, they've won... seriously. Whenever I haven't, they got a loss. I just barely realized it, but it's true. I turned on the tv just in time to watch the already-famed ball into left field that Alou could've caught. And from there, 8 runs come plateward. Not that I'm rooting for the Marlins though (though, i'm not rooting for the Cubs either. Whoever gets in for the NL I could care less about). But maybe for all you Cubs fans here, I'll do you the favor of not watching it >_>

A little more on that: While the guy was being booed etc., there were fans that not only threw beer at him, they all started chanting "Kill him! Kill him!" Ok, I admit that Alou would've caught that ball had it not been interfered with for out number 2. But come on, let's not place all the blame squarely on this man. I mean, he wasn't the reason that Alex Gonzalez couldn't make the play to short. He isn't to blame for the Marlins coming up with 8 runs in that inning. In fact, I would blame more the Cubs' bullpen as usual. I mean, this must be the season of horrible bullpens... 3 of the 4 teams in these playoffs have less than stellar bullpens (though i'll admit that Boston's pen has reverted back to Dr. Jekyll in the playoffs)... and even the Marlins BP isn't inhuman. Or how about this: how about we give a little credit to the Marlins' offense. I mean, they have been clutch this entire postseason, if you haven't noticed. And besides, Cubs fans can take consolation in the fact that Prior isn't their only go-to guy, in that Kerry Wood is their ace.. and he's pitching tonight. Still, never count the Marlins out. It'll be interesting to watch

And now that the Curse of the Bambino has been fulfilled once again, let me go on record as saying I don't give two craps who wins the world series. I hate the Marlins less than the Yankees though, the Marlins didn't beat the Cubs, the Cubs beat themselves. I think this is going to transform from being the "The most watched World Series ever", to being just another standard "hey, those damn yankees are in the World Series. Who ever would've thought." Baseball playoff ratings will receive a substantial drop for the Series, I'll tell you that much.

Quote (Tidu-who @ 17th October 2003 08:10) I think this is going to transform from being the "The most watched World Series ever", to being just another standard "hey, those damn yankees are in the World Series. Who ever would've thought." sure, let's not give any credit to the Yankees for battling back from an 8th inning comeback. let's not give any credit for the Yanks finally overcoming a pitcher who's been troubling them all series (Wakefield). Let's not give any credit to the Yankees for defeating, BY FAR, their toughest postseason opponenet in the last 10 years. Of course, it wasn't the fact that they had to work to get there this time... it's because they're the Yankees. Anyway, here's what I think of the matchup. The Yankees will be the heavy favorite when the odds are released. But that doesn't mean anything as far the Marlins are concerned. I mean, 6 of the Marlins' 7 wins were come-from-behind wins. They'll make it a good matchup. Mussina needs to start pitching like he did last night when he came in for relief. Florida's bats will not go quietly. Derrek Lee, Miguel Cabrera, and especially Ivan Rodriguez will get a piece of the pitching. The Yankees need to keep their starters in for a good 7 innings to get to Mariano to avoid having to throw a reliever into the mix. The Yanks bullpen has been horrid. It's going to be a well fought series all the way around. And that saying I don't think I should watch this series since I'm a Yankee fan and I have the awesome power to decide the Marlins' fate by watching the game >_> (Marlins are now 7-0 whenever I watch their game.... btw, sorry Cub fans... there was nothing else on) -------------------- "When I turn the page The corner bends into the perfect dog ear As if the words knew I'd need them again But at the time, I didn't see it." ~"This Ain't a Surfin' Movie" - Minus the Bear |

Mariano Rivera got the ALCS MVP. He pitched 8 innings, gave up like 4 Hits, only 1 run... and a handful of strikeouts. It looks like he's getting back to his shut em down form again.
And I give lots of credit to the BoSox. They had the #1 offense in the land this year, though it didn't show up until the last two games of the postseason. The Sox had believers of everyone this year. This was the year, they said. And they would've won easily... if not for the October magic of the Yankees. This was certainly, like I said, the toughest opponent for the Yankees in the postseason in a long time. And I said it before this series began, I was scared because this Yankee team wasn't as good as others in the past and I was afraid the Sox could take. For a Yankee fanatic, I have a lot of respect for the Sox. The will they had, the resolve they showed against their rivals, the way they turned on the offense right when they needed it. I'll go on record on this saying that the Red Sox would've had it wrapped up and had a trip to the Promised Land.... but they made one mistake, and it cost them big time: they left Pedro Martinez in the game one batter too long. I don't think they should've put him in during the eighth inning at all, considering how dominant Embree and Timlin had been during the postseason. Let those two deal with the eighth inning, then use Williamson in the ninth. But oh well, can't change it now.

I only got to listen to two at bats all game because I worked till 1am. I heard MIrabelli in the top of the inning and the first pitch homerun.
Hell, I coiuld think that i'm cursed: the only team I can ever watch win that iI want is the BUccaneers. Everyone always to seems to win the games I can't watch and deprive me of celebrating a victory when I can watch it. *cries* -------------------- "Not me... I dreamt I was a moron." |

Props to Zimmer for standing up to Steinbrenner. http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/story/6727833
But onward with the predictions, eh? I want the Marlins to win, but I think the Yanks will win, but I'll look at each game individually. Wells vs. Willis: Sorry Dontrelle. Yanks take game 1. Pavano vs. Pettitte: Pettitte's good, but Pavano is also having a good postseason. I think Florida will tie it here. 1-1. Mussina vs. Beckett: Beckett is coming off his godliest game ever, and Mussina's having a terrible postseason. Florida 2-1. Clemens vs. Redman: Very decisive game. I think Clemens will win his final start ever, though, and tie the series 2-2. After that, the starters aren't set, but if it's the same as the first three, I really can't go against my original picks, so Florida will win in 7. ![]() -------------------- Hey, put the cellphone down for a while In the night there is something wild Can you hear it breathing? To those that don't believe in curses...
The Cubs and Red Sox both: 1. Were 5 outs away from the World Series. 2. Were up by three in the 8th with one out and nobody on. 3. Had their best pitcher on the mound. 4. Had a play with fan interference (although it helped the Red Sox.) 5. Collapsed and proceeded to lose the series. Personally, If I was Dusty Baker, I would give the curse as much credit as possible to mask the fact that he got completely outmanaged in the last three games of the series, especially game 7. (Hello, Dusty, you are allowed to use your other starters in game 7 situations, like everyone else did. You do not have to use Dave Veres.) Predictions: Marlins in 4, because Sabin won't be able to help himself from watching the games. (Btw, I'll give the Yankees their credit, but I feel no obligation to, since you decided to watch game 7 and thereby crush all my hopes and dreams, and I am never speaking to you ever again.) By the way, since curses seem to work so much, I am starting the "Gears Curse" on the Marlins right now, in which they may never win another playoff series ever again until the Cubs win a world series. -------------------- Hip-Hop QOTW: "Yeah, where I'ma start it at, look I'ma part of that Downtown Philly where it's realer than a heart attack It wasn't really that ill until the start of crack Now it's a body caught every night on the Almanac" "Game Theory" The Roots |

Interestingly enough, the Marlins have never lost a playoff series. Hopefully they keep that trend going.
