Holy #%@¤! Scary! I could read it all perfectly! And I haven't even got English as my main language!
Language tricks are always cool. Try this one out if you want to. NOTE: I haven't written any of the text in the test, it's all taken from someone else, so don't give me credit for making it up/giving me criticism because of spelling errors etc. ------------------------------------------------------------------- everyone do this but dont be a jerk and cheat coz its not worth it coz it is really good: count the number of F's in the following text: FINISHED FILES ARE THE RESULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIFIC STUDY COMBINED WITH THE EXPERIENCE OF YEARS Managed it? Scroll down only after you have counted them! OK? How many? Three? Wrong, there are six - no joke! Read again! FINISHED FILES ARE THE RESULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIFIC STUDY COMBINED WITH THE EXPERIENCE OF YEARS The reasoning..... The brain cannot process the word "OF". I think it's more that people tend to look for a phoneme when asked to look for a letter that generally only has allophone one associated with it. Since the written 'f' is almost always pronounced as the phonetic /f/, changing it to its voiced counterpart /v/ confuses the brain. We actually talked about that puzzle in my phonetics and phonemics lecture. This post has been edited by Rangers51 on 17th September 2003 20:11 -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

Nice find. That owns.
(I counted 6 F's on the first try. Maybe it's cause I didn't say the words out loud, but just counted the F's?) |

I saw karasuman's in a post on the GameFAQs message boards yesterday, and it was freakishly easy to read.
I got Shirrow's in an e-mail several months ago. I got all six on first try, reading it aloud. The rest of my family tried it and only got three each, except one brother who only got two. They acted like it was a big deal (probably because it equated the number of "F"s you found to your intelligence) until I yelled at them to leave me alone, and it wasn't an accurate IQ test. They still bug me about that kind of stuff, though. -------------------- "I had to write four novels before they let me write comic books." -Brad Meltzer |

Okay, this is weird. My boyfriend sent me an e-mail with that passage last night. I'm a linguistics major, so I went, "Hey, that's kinda cool. Interesting thing to send me. Very clever." Then, my mom sent me the same thing this morning. I went, "Okay, that's kinda freaky. But still neat." And now, this evening, I check into the CoN to find it AGAIN!
Somehow, I sense this becoming the new "All your base are belong to us". Which might not necessarily be a bad thing. |

Don't worry Syndarr, it's just a conspiracy to constantly remind you what your major is.

WOOW !! What a scary discovery !! I couldn't believe it when I read it without a problem.
And I still don't know why the brain misses the word "of"...scary. This post has been edited by Amido on 21st September 2003 17:01 -------------------- -The brave do not fear the grave- |

That is really interesting, I didn't have any problem whatsoever reading it. It really is surprising how easily the brain compensates for stuff like this.

I think it's a terrible discovery, because people will use it as an excuse for not typing properly.
