TL;DR in this writer's opinion, it's still the best FF story ever, because of its exploration of difficult philosophical and political questions.

Excellent. There are more answers today on subjects. We have truths to aid us and mysteries to stimulate us. Life is not the same without those things.

I finally got around to noticing I never replied to this thread, just read the article, and, obviously, I agree. I'd quibble with how the author presents a couple things:

1) It's worth spelling out that Tietra's murder came on Zalbaag's orders, and maybe worth mentioning that they knew the shooter (and thus what aspects of society he represents and prizes).

2) I wouldn't describe the Lucavi as an "organization" per se, especially since the hosts of the Lucavi have their own positions within/across multiple factions, and it's just that much more compelling to realize that even when we're talking about the 3 major forces present throughout the game (White Lions, Black Lions, Church of Glabados), we can and should subdivide each of these factions as the game progresses.

3) I see no need to resort to the Law/Chaos axis of D&D (though, as I’m writing this comment, I’m wondering if it really might be such since Matsuno’s work at Quest explicitly used such a framework); I simply believe (as I do with D&D's Alignment system) we get a much richer view of their actions across the course of the game if we don’t try to map them to Law/Chaos.

Still, I very much appreciate the author's appreciation for Ramza's excellence, especially for his determination to understand those he finds himself opposed to.
