I started playing this game again recently and decided to come here to see what yall thought of it. What do I find? No Xenogears thread. How is this possible? Hope I didn't overlook it.
I thought with the mix of an amazing story(if you were able to get through the second half), the well drawn(if scarse) anime scenes, and a unique battle system(at the time) made this an excellent game. I remember playing this for hours on end trying to teach Fei, Citan, and Elly their deathblows. So who else played this game and what were your thoughts? -------------------- "My impersonation of an ordinary person was flawless." - Neal "Don't cry because it's over. the game wouldn't have been complete without disc 2's intricate and drawn out plot. heck, it wasn't even as complete as it was supposed to be! ok, i concede that it could have stood a little more gameplay on the second disc. but come on, that game has one of the best stories ever. the graphics as far as 3d goes were not bad at all for their time, and the anime scenes and faces are done excellently. the gameplay (esp the combo system) is innovative and enough to keep you interested the whole game and thru the side quests. the music, geez, where do i start? second to chrono cross, this was mitsuda at his very ultimate! the perfect match of the music to the story and scenery cannot be matched. xenosaga, while having a cool story, hardly does this (unfinished) masterpiece justice. it'll be interesting to see how it'll be remade when they get to xenosaga episode 5. i, for one, am nto going to hold my breath. square just hit such a home-run with this game that it'll be hard to give it improvement with a re-make. 5 stars/five ![]() This post has been edited by Elena99 on 15th September 2003 16:39 |

I liked it, for roughly the same reasons as you, Hanyou, but I ended up stuck in a cave, and then my sister erased my memory file, so I didn't finish the game...
But I liked the plot, it was awesome...and I'm looking forward to play Xenosaga, since Possible spoilers: highlight to view it is were the story all begun, Xenogears being the last episode of a story in 5 chapters, from what I heard (it's not fact, just a discussion I had with a friend really into this game) This post has been edited by Mr Thou on 15th September 2003 16:17 |

I've never liked Xenogears much at all. The music is great, and the graphics and gameplay are decent, but something about the plot and characters just didn't click. It's not that it's terribly complicated, but the whole affair had the brief but distinguishable scent of a work which tried to be deep and thought-provoking but ended up trite and pretentious.
Perhaps I'm being unfair; a good 50% of my distaste for the game comes from its rabid fanbase. Although XG definitely isn't the most popular RPG out there, those who like it worship it with a cultic fervor (and equal sanctimony). They're always the first to scream its praises whenever an RPG discussion takes place, and if someone disagrees, it's simply because they're too "stupid" to understand its greatness, or "spoiled" by the bigger names like Final Fantasy. I know some people who consider XG the greatest work of art they've ever witnessed, which I consider a stretch by any definition. Of course, XG has its high points. Many parts of the plot were quite interesting, and some of the characters (particularly Hyuga Ricdeau, a.k.a. Citan Uzuki) were really cool. I also appreciated the unique designs for the gears. -------------------- "I always have a quotation for everything - it saves original thinking." ~Dorothy L. I got Xenogears a long time ago, played a little bit of it, and promptly traded/sold/somethinged it to Neal for Chrono Cross. I thought it was a terrible game. I agree with the other assessments of the game being pretentious and trite--things that try too hard to have meaning usually don't actually manage it. Xenosaga is worse, though, in my opinion. I didn't play it, but I watched my boyfriend while he did, and laughed my ass off at the pathetic attempts to inject seriousness and meaning into the game by using big words like "nephilim" (which has Biblical significance that seems to be completely unrelated to its use in the game), etc., and having incredibly annoying characters who do incredibly stupid things.

Meh. I think Xenosaga is a decent game. It's almost like playing an interactive anime. I have gone back and picked up Xenogears because of it. I don't know when I'm actually going to play it though. I have Lunar 2, Wild Arms 3, and FFT that are all ahead of it.
From the back of the jewel case (at least), it looks like XG has some decent cut scences. Like FFX-2, I'm going to hold judgement on it until I actually play the game. -------------------- "It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it." - Aristotle |
