I voted Throw, but really it's a tie between Throw, Blitz, and Morph.

Shadow's Throw is a guaranteed 9999 from the get-go, provided you have a Heal Rod or an Imp Halberd.  Throwing the Heal Rod against any given boss on the Floating Continent is a great way to finish battles quickly.  It makes Shadow a cheap and efficient damage producer, which is just one of the many reasons I like him.

Blitz was versatile, powerful, and best of all, free.  No MP required.  Aside from Sabin's obvious physical merits, his ability to Blitz for free makes him a powerful attacker, and a few of his abilities allow him to heal, as well.  It also gets a one-up on Sword Tech, because you don't have to wait and charge it up.

Morph was very useful early on.  As soon as you get it, it's quite a powerful ability; nearly doubles your magical statistics, and gives Terra a powerful advantage against any opponent.  Later on I just like to use it because it's fun.

Blitz for sure.  Free big damage with no side effects like Cyan's charge-up or Celes' blocking of friendly spells.  Plus you have the choice of healing, single target, or all targets.

Nice poll. But where is "Lore"? Where is "Sketch/Control"? And where is "SwdTech"?

Anyway, I voted for Blitz, since it has got to be the most useful of them all. No MP, powerful attacks and ability to heal. But I also like "Lore" and "Control" a lot. It's fun to use special magics, and ordering around an opponent is also fun! "Tools", "Dance" and "SwdTech" are great ones too, naturally.

But "Runic" sucks! >_<

I chose Blitz, but my favorites are Rage, Blitz, and Lore.

I like Lore because if nothing else, the spells there are a different change of pace, rather than the same old magic that everyone else can use.  Strago's Lore spells can be a great deal of fun if you level Strago high enough (though I understand everyone's abilities are super-powerful through leveling as well), but I like to send just Strago alone to Mt. Zozo or other level-up places and have fun with his Lores.  He can pack quite a punch with just his Lores even if he's alone.

I like Rage because Gau is a lot of fun and VERY handy in many cases in terms of using spells not otherwise available to you until much later on, like Life 3.

Overall, Blitz is my favorite because it is free, it casts right after you enter the code, and they are, in some cases, fun to watch.  Sabin's another character I like to send alone in various places to level up because it's a lot of fun taking on all enemies with just one character.

Well, to me, I like them all.  Throw makes Shadow a super assassin, however, what you throw doesn't come back. Locke's steal is great for obvious reasons, but almost every FF game has a thief, or "treasurer-hunter." Lore, to me isn't that great because they are enemy attacks in which not all are very useful, except for GrandTrain. Rage you can't control, though hte resulting attacks can be powerful and lifesaving. Neither can you control Sketch.  Control is good, but what you want to control may not be there (ie Brachiosaur - Ultima). Swdtech you have to charge up.  You can't use morph too much, or else it doesn't last.  I've never gotten slot to work, Runic can take away cure spells if needed. Blitz is great for all the reasons above, but heal biltzes don't heal Sabin himself.  Tools hardly have disadvantages, however, I go for dance.  True, it probably has more disadvantages than the others, but it looks good once executed, and nobody else voted for it.

Hey, why isn't magic there? not all can use magic?
Well if that doesn't count (bc this topic is character ability), I would go for lore. Although it requires lots of MP, There are so many stuff you can do if you know ur opponents well (even you don't, u can always use scan. When you have same level, u can use stone, but if it's not, you still can use L3 muddle, L4 Flare, L5 doom, also, using lore, you can cast wind and water spells.)

everyone's talking about "yeah blitz is so great cuz its free" and shit but come on do you REALLY hit the exact combination every time?  some of those combinations are kind of hard; before a lot of practice (i.e. to a beginner), blitzes like bum rush and fire dance will msot likely work less than 50% of the time.  i choose dance -- sun bath has saved my life countless times more than any other ability.

Besides, you know about the "easy versions" of the blitz attacks, right? That is: Instead of rolling around the gamepad, use these combinations instead:

Aurabolt - Down, down, left
Fire Dance - Left, left, down, down right

And so on. Easy as pie! :nods:

I like the tools.  The animations don't take too long/annoy me, and I'm pretty sure that they do the same damage even if Edgar's in the back row...even if they don't, they do enough damage that I've never suffered from keeping Edgar in the back row.  ^_^

Blitz - A close second, pretty powerful and FREE.  Free = Nice

I voted for Tools, but my favorite is Sketch/Control, and I also love Slots.

While Relm isn't exactly the best character to have around in a fight, I simply adore being able to take control of an enemy creature and use its abilities against its allies. I especially like doing it with the Coyers on the Floating Continent and using their 1000 Needles attack. ;) And the first fight where she uses Sketch against Ultros is a classic moment in my book. ^_^

Tools is wonderful for three reasons: Sun Beam, Chainsaw, and Air Anchor. Sun Beam is a great asset at the time you get it--it does LOTS of damage for that point in the game. Sure, Chainsaw fails sometimes, but not often enough to be useless, and when it works, BOY does it work. And Edgar just looks so cute in his little Jason mask! For a laugh, I like to give Gogo the Tools ability, so he can wear it too.  :D And of course, Air Anchor is sort of like Edgar's own version of Control. You move, you die. ;)

And hell...Slots is just FUN. Even Lagomorph is useful sometimes. And Setzer's always been my favorite character, so I can't let a post go without extolling his virtues. ;)

The one with the diamonds is 7-Flush, confusingly enough.

And I could very often hit all diamonds at one point in the past.  I mean, not infallibly; I still managed to Lagomorph it up a fair bit of the time.  But I did get it frequently.  However, I have absolutely no idea how this happened, and in fact on the second and especially third tumblers, the point at which I pressed the stop button seemed to have little or no relevance to the actual stop point or symbol.  I somewhat suspect that minor internal emulator glitches had something to do with it (like the ones that make the Chrono Trigger theme too slow or the game too fast on Snes9x, or slightly but somehow completely ruin the handling on Mario Kart), but I wouldn't know for sure.

It's not a glitch.  That's very much intentional.  There is code in the slot rotation that makes it happen.

It's also possible to rig the Slots up right back because the random number generator used to determine whether you can get particular slot attacks gets its index reset to 0 for every battle.

The rigging didsassembly at my site isn't complete (not all attacks that can fumble with the RNG have been found, the disasm itself is as complete as I feel like getting it) and I don't have the random number table up, but I can give you three combos that I have found so far that should get you Joker Doom (Setzer's 7-7-7 attack) if;

1. you use them at the start of battle...

2. no one else screws with the RNG in question (hence why you should only try this at the beginning of battle).

3. you wait for the attack animations to complete before getting the first 7.

Once you have the first 7, that RNG can do anything it wants, you have the value you need to get the last 7.

Combos:

Flare, Antdot, Joker Doom
Meteor, Fire Dance, Joker Doom
Mute x2, Rasp, Joker Doom

The order of the attacks doesn't matter, except of course that the three 7's must come last.

Yes, I know this sounds rumor-tastic and unbelieveable, but these combos do work.  Flare/Antdot is the best one I've found so far, as it only takes one turn to set up the RNG if you use X-Magic.

Until you see it for yourself, you'll just have to trust me. :)

One last thing; this is not to say that once you execute one of these combos, it'll be as easy as lining up 3 diamonds.  These combos merely open up the possibility of getting Joker Doom, you'll still need to get the 7's mostly by yourself.  If you need help, try pausing and unpausing repedetly.  This will slow the slots down (unlike FF7, pausing the game pauses the slots), making it a bit easier to get what you want.

That's just if you want Setzer's ultimate attack; once I get the RNG table out and finish finding out which graphics will affect Slot's third reel (the one affected by everything I stated above), you should be able to work out combos to get other attacks without fear of unfairness, such as 3 BAR and Bahamut.

Steal.  I mean for one Locke is incredibly cool, two steal owns, and three one of the only fun things about playing the game over and over again is stealing, because I never used to use it and I thought Locke was the worst guy in the game.  But now I know it is the opposite.  I just love capture/Genji Glove or Offering.

So I chose Slot...got a problem with it? If so...talk to my secretary.

Slot just suited me well. Often I go with half-baked, off-chance, one-in-a-million chance plans when fighting. Slot just worked well for me.
