I have a faint memory that the booklet of FF6 said that Stamina affects how much more max HP and max MP you will get each time you level up, but I could be wrong... -_-

Well, here's a better definition for you:

The exact formulas for Stamina can be found in Terii's algorithms doc, but it basically does the following; strengthens the effects of Regen, Tintinabar, Seizure, and Poison, and also contributes to defending against certain instant death-type attacks:

Break
Doom
Demi
Quartr
X-Zone
W Wind
Shoat
Odin
Raiden
Antlion
Snare
X-Fer
Grav Bomb
Instant death Chain Saw

The reason behind Stamina affecting the Esper attacks and Chain Saw is because enemies have a Stamina rating as well (also found in Terii's doc because this one is much less obvious than just hacking a monster's stats).  This is the reason Chain Saw misses Cactrot, for example, and marks the only difference between an unblockable attack and one with 255 Hit Rate; 255 Hit Rate can be blocked by 128 M.Block if Stamina is involved, unblockable attacks cannot.  128 Stamina can also block all of those attacks perfectly if you don't have the M.Block to do it with, except of course in the case of Vanish.  It's still the most worthless working statistic in the game though.

And yes, the instruction booklet said Stamina affected HP gain, and yes, the instruction booklet is wrong.  HP/MP gains are fixed and the same for all unless modified through the use of Esper bonuses.

Hey Zed! What about the Blaster attack?

Also, if I was to use Stamina +2 on a character all the way up to level 99, wouldn't this do any change at all? Isn't it good to be able to avoid instant death attacks? (No offense, just curious ;) ).

Of course, Strength +2 would be a better choice...

It's not important because it's use fails in comparision to the other stats. More HP and MP will be useful against EVERY enemy, but one hit kill dodging it only useful against some enemies.

What I listed is all it covers.  No Blaster, no Dischord, no Cyclonic, nothing else.  A Safety Bit or Memento Ring can do the job of 128 Stamina and more.  Such a high Stamina rating is only good for the Fanatic's Tower, and even then, we're only talking six out of 54 spells and a free Relic slot.  Boosting Stamina to free a Relic slot for the Fanatic's Tower is a stupid idea since you would have to know Stamina's function to boost it for that purpose plus the fact it's use is extremely limited compared to maxing out other stats.  You're better off Metamorphing for Safety Bits.

Also, 128 is as high as Espers can take Vigor, Speed, Stamina, and Mag.Pwr.  To go higher than that requires the use of equipment bonuses.

I was under the impression that Speed couldn't be raised above 64. Was I wrong?

1. playing for so long (since Oct. 22, 1994).
2. hacking the game on my own.  I started a long time ago, and honestly, I think I'm really behind in how far my hacking skills should have developed given the timespan.  Hell, I helped Cless with his doc, if that's any indication of how long I've had to study ROM hacking....
3. getting involved with other's research.  See the enemy command scripts for the best example of that.
4. Good friends that had a large appetite for more FF3 knowledge.

But I think one of the best reasons would be...

5. The Advanced Tactics Quiz.  Mnrogar started this up over on the GameFAQs FF3 board in Jan. 2001, and throughout the next year or so, a few of the regulars at the board, including myself, found out more and more about the game, specifically the battle engine, just to challenge each other with and break down the questions others posed.  Long story short, the ATQ inspired a competition to learn all there was and a lot more, fast.  It was something new to do with the game.

So in a word, although part of it was trying to make the game last longer, all roads lead back to the spirit of competition.  Knowing more and the ability to recall it faster allowed me to dumbfound people and answer quickly, while that same knowledge helped me construct better monstrosities.

Amazing how far people go just to say "HA! Gotcha!", or something to that extent, isn't it? :)
