hey guys, i was just wondering if there are any drummers in the forums, and if so, i was wondering if you can help me:
ive mentioned in the past that i play guitar and bass and my drummer has his set at my house and im really adamant at learning how to play, but i dont know where to start so if anyone can gimme some easy beginner songs, that would be great. as of right now, i can play enter sandman, wherever i may roam, and for whom the bell tolls, all of those by metallica, i can play iron man by black sabbath, and a really simplified version of bulls on parade by rage against the machine. i really wanna learn how to play some guns n roses. well if anyone can help at all, i would really appreciate it. -------------------- You watch the world exploding every single night Dancing in the sun, a newborn in the light Say goodbye to gravity and say goodbye to death Hello to eternity and live for every breath Your time will come... |

I'll ask my drummer, he's pretty accomplished. I know one important thing about playing drums is limb independency. He's got a bunch of practice stuff for working with that, so I'll find out if I can get any, or any suggestions.

Hey there! Nice to have musicans here on the forum! I play guitar and keyboard (and sing a lil' bit too
If you were talking about learning how to drum, I guess I can't help you that much since I'm not a drummer. But try almost any punk song (REAL punk songs! Not Blink 182. That drummer is an expert). They might be a little fast, but the beat and the fills are easy. Also, you might want to try a couple of Beatles songs. Ringo Starr wasn't really a hot shot when it came to drum playing. I reckon that "Longview" by Green Day should be a good one for drums too... You may not know it but I to was a musician. Yes in 8th grade my teacher said I was bad at every instrument (and I am tone deaf so bye bye singing career) but said I had good stage prescence so she gave me a solo on a xylophone. Anyways back to drumming I wasn't really good at that either all I could do was the basic 4 tap, 1 bass pedal, 1the thingy with two crash things but there smaller, and a drum hit with my left hand. But a really good song I think to learn from would be "if you want to destroy my sweater" by Weezer. It has a very very simply, slow, easy, but nice sounding drum beat.

If you're serious about drumming, I really suggest getting a teacher. Unless you're the second coming of Buddy Rich, it will be quite difficult to teach yourself to play the drums well. Even getting a drummer friend to show you some exercises you can do would be better than nothing.
Now, if you're just doing it for fun and don't really aspire to become a great drummer, I'd suggest just playing along to songs. A lot of the bluesy rock bands on classic rock radio stations have pretty basic drum beats you could try to emulate, or just play an improv 'jam' along with. Older punk music generally had interesting yet simple drumming as well. The important thing to remember is that starting off at too high a level can actually hinder your development. It is important to learn the fundamentals before you try to play a Neil Peart percussion track! Guns n' Roses, for the most part, never really had what I'd call spectacular drumming. It shouldn't take too much practice to learn a few of their songs. -------------------- Always hopeful, yet discontent; he knows changes aren't permanent -- But change is! |
