System Shock 2- should I play it?

I played a short version of the original (and badly outdated) System Shock, and I wound up loving the concept. SHODAN, in particular, intrigued me. There is a System Shock 2, but I need to decide whether I want to buy it or not. I know that the game was made in 1999, but it still has mods on Steam and has been given rave critical reviews. The downside is that I never have trusted video game critics, and would rather get some word of mouth feedback.

If you've played it, what do you think of it?

I got it last summer and have only gotten into it about an hour. It seems like it has the capacity to be a well-scripted and interesting game, and it's hard to ignore the great reviews; however, I just didn't find it all that much fun to actually play. The gameplay, for me, just didn't age well, and I say that as someone who gleefully played through all of the original Half-Life just a couple years back.

Like I say, I think it could be a very enjoyable game in terms of plot and I want to go back to it, even if I decide to cheat my way through it, just to see the plot. But I think as a game, it needs a remake to be enjoyable.

I'd recommend the original SS w/ a mouse mod over SS2 honestly. It's more intuitive IMO and the movement mechanics are less...delayed. It also puts you right in the action pretty quick, where SS2 has you go through a character sheet section to get 'plus x to y' stats that offer no tangible difference in play once you actually get into the game proper.

As always, I blame D 'n D.

There's a lot of 'classic' games from that era - and the studio that made this game in particular - that suffer from a transitional sort of void where games based on pen and paper concepts would be grafted onto realtime 3d systems and try to make these two things play nice. It made these 3d games feel 'complex' at a time when 3d games were not very nuanced and D'nD has a familiar association with the demographics, so it was win win...cept it kinda made the games a chore to play.

HL is still fun to play precisely because it didn't try to use paper systems. It kept the wheat and chucked the chaff.
