Finally found a question always at the tip of my tounge.

*How long does a game need to be out before one can discuss it?*

In terms of being buyable and viable to the public/private. Whichever best applies.

Hopefully not before a chosen date. Feels like insider trading all over again. You also don't want to wait until your deathbed either. Unless you for some reason foresee your death soon after that game comes out.

Also, it's natural to wait to see and hear opinions on it. Is it worth my time after I learn more about it before I commit time/resources to it? smile.gif

I'm not completely sure I understand your question. I think by combining the post and the thread title, you mean, how long you should wait until you can openly talk about spoilers for a game/movie/whatever?

If so, that's an interesting question and one we've struggled with from time to time here, as I'm sure most online communities have. It's difficult to draw a line in the sand for such things when you have no way of knowing who all will be seeing the message; in the case of CoN, we still have users who are being introduced to these games fifteen or twenty years after release, thanks largely to emulation and the number of modern-device remakes and re-releases. They're the exception rather than the norm, but it's why we as a group tend to expect people to mark spoilers by trying to put themselves in the shoes of someone who has never played before.

There's clearly no one right answer to the question, which is another issue that is specific to online communication. When you want to talk to a friend or a group of friends in person or even over Facebook, you either already know what their tolerance for spoilers is, or you can quickly ask. When you're making a permanent post to the public sphere, you either have to simply not care or be overly cautious.

For me, personally, I am always cautious of my audience. It's not too much effort for a reader to click through a spoiler, and they can deal with it if they really want to see it. Odds are given the context of what people say, people "in the know" know what is being hidden from them without even having to check.

Thanks. I hate to think AI's and such are overtaking us in terms of creativity. Also, the net and technology in general has a double ability. The ability to pay for things online or download it for free.

Part of the problem is my own ego with high standards. Oh, well. Plenty of things to do off the net anyway naturally. happy.gif

Well, many forums (including this one) have spoiler tags as an option, so you can always put a lot of stuff under spoiler tags.

Unless it's going to be like this one friend of mine talking about 9 Persons 9 Hours 9 Doors, where everything he said about it basically looked like a heavily-redacted diplomatic secrets document.

I would guess that it depends on how popular what you might be spoiling is.

For instance, everyone seems to know, through popcultural osmosis or whatever, that Rosebud is Citizen Kane's sled. That's like the oldest spoiler in the book.

Though I've found that series-centric communities such as this tend to be more stringent about what can be spoiled and what cannot.

I'd err on the side of caution, myself.
