Apparently there's a bit of a discussion waiting to happen regarding good (and bad) kinds of beer out there, since the St. Patrick's Day topic veered that direction. Go figure, eh?
So, here's a proper topic to discuss beer in general and a selection of beers to try and those to avoid. I can kick it off because over the last four years or so I've started to get into the hops a bit and have tried a fair amount of different kinds of stuff, I guess. Note that I do NOT want to know if you are big into underage drinking, you people. Bragging about that sort of thing really makes you look kinda daft, even if you might know what you're talking about. ![]() So here's what I'm into at the moment: 1. Yuengling Black and Tan: It's not the best Black and Tan I've ever had, but it's pretty inexpensive and it really is good. It's from the oldest brewery in America, and appears to be available mostly in the Northeast (it's brewed in eastern Penn). It's stout, but not overpowering due to the mitigating "tan" aspect. Really, I like just about everything I've tried from Yuengling, so if you like a proper Black & Tan made to order at a pub, this is a good choice. 2. Guinness: The Ancient says that American Guinness is awful compared to the proper Irish blend, which I can't verify. But if that's the case, I need the stuff across the pond right now, because I don't think Guinness is nasty at all. It's quite stout, sure, so I wouldn't try it as the first beer you ever drink. But it didn't take me long to get into it at all, and it's so freakin' hypnotic to watch it in your glass. 3. Pilsner Urquell: Believe it or not, this is Czech beer. And you should believe it, because it seems to be where the Pilsner originated. I don't have any trouble finding it where I live, but I had never heard of it until I moved here. A Pislner tends to be light and hoppy, and therefore has quite a lot of flavor. It's a nice beer to have with a meal because it's quite light and complimentary to a lot of food, and it's not exceedingly alcohol heavy when tempered by food. 4. Red Stripe Lager: Has the best bottle of any beer I've ever had. ![]() OK, that will do for now. Go nuts. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Cool topic!
I'm from Holland and I always wonder why people from "outside" appear to like Heineken so much. Most of us Dutchmen who haven't had their tastebuds removed, call that stuff "Zeikneken", "zeik" meaning piss. Here's my personal top 3... 1. Grolsch. Number one Dutch beer. Tastes rich and strong, like a real beer should. 2. Hertog Jan. Good second. More a beer for women because of its slighty sweet taste, which reminds a bit of bananas. 3. Palm. Rich Belgian beer. Drink it after meal, the "Bourgondian" way, in an appropriate big glass. And yes, Germany and Belgium are in fact better beer-countries than The Netherlands. ![]() I like white beer too, by the way. Especially in the summer, on a terrace with a lemon on the glass. -------------------- |

I've got what I like to call "situational" favorites.... and a few that I absolutely cannot stand.
If I've been out in the yard mowing on a hot summer day for several hours, nothing is better to me than an ice cold Miller High Life. If I'm at a party where kegs are prevalent, my favorite keg beer would be Heineken or Bud Light. When watching football with the hooligans that I call friends, there is absolutely only one beer that you bring to the party. Coors Light. It's the only beer I've ever found that tastes better from a can than from a glass bottle. When at a pub and ordering a draft pitcher, Michelobe Light gets my vote. Bud Light is ok here, but Coors Light in draft tastes like water. My favorite regional beer is Fat Tire Ale, from the New Belgium Brewing Company in the northwest US. Good stuff.... too bad they don't ship to North Carolina. If I'm having a get together at my place, Josh, I'll kindly ask you to bring a six pack of Yuengling. Good stuff. Now, on to the nasty ones. (my opinion, and no knock whatsoever on those who enjoy these) Guiness. I can't stand the stuff. The fact that my first and only one had to be drunk through a straw due to a lost bet probably didn't help matters, but really now.... it was just too stout and tasted terrible. Budweiser. This stuff is what we commonly refer to in the south as "piss beer". The commercials, in my opinion, are way off the mark.... It is neither refreshing, tasteful, or smooth. Drinking it is akin to swallowing celery juice mixed with vodka. (come to think of it, some of you europeans may like it) ![]() Rolling Rock. Now when I was younger, this stuff was great. For a new drinker like myself, this was the perfect introduction to alcohol. Smooth, and kindof tasty, and not very heavy. Now that I'm older and (presumably) wiser, I think it tastes too watered down to really enjoy. Might as well drink that Aspen crap. -------------------- Join the Army, see the world, meet interesting people - and kill them. ~Pacifist Badge, 1978 |

I don't find it particulary refreshing not even after sweaty work on a sweaty day (not more then other drinks, anyway), and if I allow myself to get more then a little affected I drink liquor with more of a 'punch' in it. That being said, there is one kind of beer I enjoy: Desperados - Tequila flavored beer. It was the first beer I could feasably stomach, and the only beer to date I really like. In general, I really don't like beer. If I'm going to drink socially (happens rarely) or drink to get drunk (even more rarely), I want something that has a better taste to it.
The only beers that I have liked are: Alexander Keith's. Brewed in Halifax, Nova-Scotia (Canada), it's the only beer that doesn't taste nasty, to me. Sapporo. At least, I think that's what it's called. It's Japanese. Not as good as a Keith's, but it's drinkable. I've tasted American beers on occasion, but they weren't for me. -------------------- I had an old signature. Now I've changed it. |

If it's the usual, Budweiser. It's my drink of choice for average, casual, anytime drinking. I can only tolerate non-Lite American beerm the Lite ones taste like pee.
If we're going imports/microbrews, my favorites are: Blue Moon, Sam Adams Lager, and Red Hook (all varieties) in the US Newcastle, etc. among dark Euro beers Stella Artois among light Euro beers And nothing beats a Corona + lime when the heat tops 90. Can't drink the white Belgian beers like a previous poster suggested, they taste odd to me. And on a side note, has anyone tried one of those Budweiser E's? It's beer + red bull, kindof a fruity, light taste, it's actually pretty good. And treats you well the next mornin' too... |

I not a very big beer drinker (gimme a bit of vodka and, on occasion, a bit of vermouth in a glass, hold the rocks, and I'm set), and certainly no connoisseur, but I'd have to say Coors Light is probably my favorite. Nothing fancy, but mellow and definitely one of the best beers to drink with spicy foods. It's actually the only beer I've ever drank just for refreshment or when drinking socially.
Other than that, Corona isn't half bad if the temperature's high. Otherwise it's nasty. Yeah, I'm a wimpy beer drinker. ![]() -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will. Personally, I prefer liquer to beer. Just seems so much more efficient. And I'm not really a social drinker anyway.
Here's some enlightenment: Marines see it as a sacred duty to ensure that everyone withing 200 feet of the barracks is as inebriated as they are, regardless of age. It won't suprise most of you that alcohol flows like water amongst us jarheads, and we usually don't get troubled unless someone does something stupid (almost entirely DUIs trying to get back on base before formation). But alcohol and responsibility is a bit off topic. Carona is popular here, as well as English beers. Most of the fellows in my unit actually dislike American beer, as do I. A good, dark laager is perfect for chillin in Stinkey's (the unofficial bar in one of the rooms) and watchin a movie. Jack Daniels is very popular as well, and almost always makes an appearance. My preference is a few liters of Stoli (that's Russian vodka) mixed with Pepsi & lemon and a game of pool. Good lord, how did I forget Heinekin? I will go haze myself in pennance to the beer gods. I can testify that the REAL Guinness is great. I've never tried the 'American version'.
I hardly ever drink anything, however. I usually just taste stuff. I've never really been drunk either; at one point, though, I did have a bit of trouble walking *completely* straight, but only to that extent. -------------------- SPEKKIO: "GRRR...That was most embarrassing!" |

Quote (bahamut0013 @ 23rd March 2005 00:50) Personally, I prefer liquer to beer. Just seems so much more efficient. And I'm not really a social drinker anyway. Nothing better for me than a nice big glass of Captian and Pepsi for me. But for beer (though I'm not the biggest beer guy): Coors Light is probably my favorite. It's what all my buddies drink. Also, I've always been a fan of living the High Life. Corona + lime is also good stuff. Also, a good Miller Light is fine for me I guess. Leninkugel's Honey Weiss is an outstanding beer as well, it's not sweet or anything, it just tastes like something other than sewage. Bad beers? Sam Adams Boston Lager. WOW. Talk about bitter pond water. This is practically all my parents drink, besides random imported stuff. I cannot under any circumstance drink this anymore. Yuck. The Beast. So fashionable around here with its high alcohol content, Milwaukee's Best (don't believe the name, Milwaukee has at least 5 or 6 other beers better than this piss) should only be consumed if you wish to get drunk and fast, it is not a beer you can casually drink with friends. Also falling directly in this category? Ice House and Busch Light. -------------------- The clouds ran away, opened up the sky And one by one I watched every constellation die And there I was frozen, standing in my backyard Face to face, eye to eye, staring at the last star I should've known, walked all the way home To find that she wasn't here, I'm still all alone -Atmosphere "Always Coming Back Home to You" |

I like all kinds of beer, even if my preference largely goes to blond ones (which is changing nowadays though...)
Blond beers: Leffe is probably my favourite. It's an abbey beer, blond, with a very nice aftertaste. Grimbergen is fairly similar, but lacks the specific aftertaste. Foster is kinda nice, very light and easy to drink up. Finally, when it comes down to it, I take a 1664 in bars if none of the above is available. Other beers: Kilkenny, Georges Killians, Guiness... I like almost any brown beer (Guiness is special, not really a brown, I guess...I'm not the technician about the designation of beers, I mostly drink them ![]() This post has been edited by Mr Thou on 23rd March 2005 11:07 |

I have heard of chocolate beer, though not cherry. Never tried either, though.
Since I posted this topic, the discussions here and in chat reminded me of some other beers to talk about. Elena mentioned Sapporo, which is indeed a pretty tasty lager. Also note Kirin, which besides having a name that appeals to the FF nerd still living deep inside of me, is also a nice Japanese lager. SSJC in chat reminded me of Woodchuck hard ciders, which while not beers per se are an alternative to beer, brewed with apples instead of grain. I used to love Woodchucks, drank them almost exclusively, but I haven't had one in aeons. Finally, Hamedo mentions a beer that I, too, drank as a beer neophyte: Rolling Rock. He's totally right, it is an excellent intro into beer, but once you refine your palate a bit more, it's absoluely useless. Great logo, though! Edit And Ryan just reminded me of another favorite, Newcastle Brown Ale. Dark, but nice and smooth and very drinkable at the beginning AND at the end of a night. Edit Also, beer here, not liquor. I wouldn't complain about a liquor thread, though, lol. Import beers have really taken off in Canada in the last 15 years or so. Names already mentioned that are popular include Leffe, Pilsner Urquell, Heineken (best in cans, though, since beer in green bottles tastes downright skunky), to name just a few. I'm a fan of Hoegaarden, and I particularly like the huge glass they give you in bars.
My absolute favourite beer is a little gem called Quelque Chose made by Quebec's Unibroue. It's an 8% cherry beer that's meant to be mulled (ie heated). It tastes absolutely fantastic on a cold day. I certainly don't drink many beers out of a coffee cup, but this is best served in one. If you ever get a chance to try this one, don't miss the opportunity. Here's a link to it: http://www.unibroue.com/products/qqch.cfm P.S. for those who like Coors Light, and I like it too, is there a regular Coors beer in the U.S.? We only have Light up here in Canada. -------------------- Cannis Rules: Balance of Power - My favourite Yuri's Revenge Mod |

I have an uncle who likes "bloody beer". It's basically a beer poured in a glass, then mixed with either V8 juice or tomato juice. I spent years thinking this was absolutely nuts, and that no rational person would ever do this.... Then I saw Jerry McGuire. There's this one scene where Cushman's dad mixes one of these bad boys up and puts a celery stick in it, if I remember right. Utterly nasty, but at least my uncle wasn't alone in his wierdness.
I failed to mention probably one of the worst beers I've ever drank in my life when I was posting earlier. Icehouse Light. Worst. Taste. Ever. Go try one tonight and come back on here and just try to tell ol' Hamedo that you liked it. Stella artois: nice, pleasent after taste and the bottles are available in big manly "Game watchers" and tiny grippable "dont feel up to a full one" sizes Carlberg export: tastes kinda musty not good. Carling: awfull Newcaslte brown ale: guiness, only a little bit sweeter. Grolsh: comes in 1.5 ltr bottles(about the same as a 40 ounce)- a rarety in the UK and it tastes nice Guiness: whatever deal the Irish signed with Satan to get great drink, it worked... Well for St Pats Day I of course go for Guiness, its a meal in a bottle. But usually I rely on the cheap stuff, especially on a teachers salary like Busch and Beast (aka Milwaukee Best). At the bars I like the good stuff like Bud, Coors, and Miller, of course no "light" stuff cause that is crap.

My current beer of choice is Red Hook. They have quite a variety of beers under that label, so I can really enjoy a bunch of different flavors without straying from a label I trust. Right now I'm heavy into the Nut Brown.
The best beer I've ever had was brewed by a co-worker who brews his own beer on a regular basis. The stuff he makes is simply amazing, and it gets you drunk pretty quickly to boot. Unfortunately...I end up drinking crap(Bud Light, Coors Light, Miller Light) beer more than anything else cause my friends seem to think that the only proper way to drink is to imbibe as much cheap beer as fast as possible. -------------------- "That Light has bestowed upon me the greatest black magic!" |

Worst beer ever? Something called Gold Medal, it must be local; I had it once at a friend's house. The can proudly states that it won first place in some contest. In the typical American tradition of light beers, it tastes as though someone soaked their foot in it. Well, I'm sure I'm in the minority, as students everywhere must enjoy it's high alcohol/price ratio.
Also, Samuel Adams Triple Bock, for all of you who enjoy something alchoholic on your waffles in place of maple syrup. I used to drink a wider variety of beers, including Red Hook IPA, New Castle, and the (deservingly so) obligatory and ubiquitous Guiness. Once I tasted a McSquirrely's, however, I can't justify spending money on anything else. It's a Nut brown Ale produced with extra Malt ("caramel") and darker grains. We also brew the wort longer to bring out more of the flavor from the grains... Yes, it's a home brew. There's a beer supply distributing center (in one of the little coastal towns around here) that my friends and I buy supplies from, and we brew it up in 50 bottle batches that take 6 weeks to age. I don't think the place is a store, or that they do a lot of retail business directly from what I think must be their warehouse (where we go to purchase supplies), but it's a quality place: we get to tweak our recipe with all sorts of varieties of malt extracts, grains, and liquid yeasts. Also, my grand-father, who ran a package store for 60 some odd years, gives excellent advice on beer making and critiques of the finnished product. My goodness, this stuff is darker than Guiness, but more a rich brown. It's smooth, too. Smooth and Flavorful... I'm starting to want one now, but something tells me such a treat on Good Friday would be inappropriate; I guess I'll wait until Sunday. So, yeah, it's the best stuff I've ever had. http://geocities.com/iainperegrine/mcsquirrelys.jpg (The label was made before they won ![]() This post has been edited by Iain Peregrine on 25th March 2005 21:18 |

Beers I like to drink? Hmmm. I'd say:
Murphy's Irish Red: I found this when I was studying abroad in Australia and I can't find it anywhere here in the USA. It's the best beer I've ever had. Guiness: Great beer that is pretty heavy. I'd love to try some authentic Guiness across the Atlantic. Newcastle Brown Ale: Recently have gotten into this thanks to my brother in law. Good stuff. Sapporo: Best Japanese beer in my opinion. Also was the first beer I ever had. Tried it when I visited Japan in an exchange student program. So what do I drink when I'm just with the guys, hanging out, watching football? Coors Light and Bud Light usually. Not nearly the quality of the stuff above, but I guess when watching football, it's more for socializing anyways. |

NNNNNNNNNNNECROMANCY
![]() I've made a few more trips to my favorite pub since I started this thread; said pub has two full pages of bottled beer at seven or eight point type. As such, I've found new stuff over the months and years: 1. Asahi - a Japanese dry beer that is EXTREMELY dry. I've offered it to several people who refuse to drink it because it's so dry, but it's the reason I like it. I order one every time I go out for hibachi now. 2. Sam Adams Cherry Wheat - I like Winter Lager, but I love Cherry Wheat, especially from the tap. In fact, when in Boston this past summer, our historical walking tour of downtown was ruined by three pitchers of the best, freshest beer I think I've ever had. We went in for a pitstop on a 95 degree day, and went out rather sated and looking for a karaoke bar. 3. Arrogant Bastard Stout - Great name, great packaging, stoutest beer I've ever had, including Rogue Shakespeare. If you can finish a bottle in one sitting, then kudos, I'm willing to bet it's a fairly exclusive club. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Sam Adams Boston Lager is my favorite beer. I've developed a love of lagers.
Smithwick's from Guinness (Irish import) is one of the best beers and I recommend that one to beer-drinkers. Miller Lite and Heinneken (not sure on spelling) are regular drinks of mine from time to time. As far as hard liquor goes, I had Jim Beam (forgot the exact flavor) and that one was a little too sweet for me. Jack Daniel's is great and I have a few shots of that every now and then. I don't like Budweisser. It's just a bad beer. -------------------- "Thought I was dead, eh? Not until I fulfill my dream!" Seifer Almasy "The most important part of the story is the ending." Quote (Rangers51 @ 3rd January 2007 13:54) 1. Asahi - a Japanese dry beer that is EXTREMELY dry. I've offered it to several people who refuse to drink it because it's so dry, but it's the reason I like it. I order one every time I go out for hibachi now. Ugh. I can't stand that stuff. It doesn't taste like beer at all. There are certain things the Japanese are just terrible at and making beer is one of them. If I feel the need to drink something authentically Japanese I'll stick with Sake and not some poor attempt at a beer equivalent! -------------------- "That Light has bestowed upon me the greatest black magic!" |

Quote (FabulousFreebird @ 3rd January 2007 16:21) Sam Adams Boston Lager is my favorite beer. I've developed a love of lagers. Haha, that is almost the only thing my parents drank all through my high school years. I was not a beersman at the time, and it was downright terrible. I still don't like it much, but my dad swears by it. We had a big long talk about this when I came home schwasted on my 21st and I went up to my fridge and pulled out a Beast Light and fell into him. He said he was embarassed for me. No, not for falling. For drinking beer colored piss water. I've changed my alcohol preferences a lot in the past year. I prefer beer to anything else now, because I can just down it and be fine. Don't have to worry about hitting a drunk wall out of nowhere, or my stomach feeling like crap. Milwaukee's Best Light is still the standard at any college party here in Wisconsin. It's cheap, not bad at all like Natty Ice/Light, and it'll get ya drunk. I still like Coors Light the best given my price range but: Heineken - Wow, I don't know what it is, but this stuff is great! I used to gag from the smell of green bottled beer when I was younger, but now I like it. A lot. Rolling Rock - For anyone that's a beer beginner, get this. It's a great starter beer, trust me. Once I get money to afford it, I am going to just go to the liquor store and bring home something new every few days to expand my pallette.
