Which Final Fantasy Games Haven't You Played?

And which do you want to play?

In the mid-90s when I first discovered Final Fantasy and Square games, I played just about every game of theirs I could. This became more difficult during the Playstation era, when the volume of games they were producing increased, most of them were being released in the West whereas previously most where Japan exclusive, and at the same time I was older and had less time for video games. This is even more true now! So, while I'm in a FF mood, I actually want to dive into some of the games I never played, because at some point I won't have any time again, and I'll probably want to take another prolonged break from the series anyway.

Of the numbered FFs, I've played 1-10. I bought FF12 hoping to play it on my PS3, but by that point the system was no longer backwards compatible. mad.gif I skipped 11 because I don't really do MMORPGs, and 14:ARR looks awesome but I can't swing the monthly fees right now. So, wanting to give one of the new games a chance, I picked up FF13. It was only $7 used at Gamestop so it's not some huge loss if I end up hating it.

The graphics are incredible, some of the best I've seen even though the game is almost 4 years old now. Can't comment much on the gameplay since everything seems to be a tutorial right now. The characters seem like standard Tetsuya Nomura fare, and I'm not far enough into the story to tell if I like it. But it does feel good to finally be experiencing something new as opposed to retreading the same ground with old games and remakes of old games.

I've made a list of possible FF games to play afterwards (that I've never played) based on my own tastes and reviews I've heard, here are some of the choices: FF Tactics, FF Dimensions, FFIV: The After Years. I suppose I'll also consider XIII-2 and Lightning Returns depending on how this turns out.

What's this? A mature, patient and measured approach to a new FF game? ON MY INTERNETS!?!?

My goal is to finish all the main series' single player games, and Tactics. I'd consider the XIII sequels aswell. On that front i've only 2,3,8,9 and 12 to play.. so about half =/

I'd probably play them in order now, but so little time..

I have taken a stab or two at Final Fantasy I, but am progressing very slowly. I have also taken a brief look at a fantranslation of III that my uncle had on his NES emulator.

Aside from that, I have not played anything besides IV,V, and VI. I really want to play VII and VIII, and it would be nice to try IX and X. I am actually most interested in VIII, but I am in more of a hurry to play VII because everyone keeps giving away spoilers...

I don't know when I'll get to FF XIII, but I do own a copy and I am intrigued to see what all the mixed enthusiasm and fuss is about. It did take me awhile to get to XII - I played it in earnest for the first time in mid-2012. Once that HD re-release of FF X and X-2 lands, I'll play through both in succession. Probably.

In the mid-90s when I first discovered Final Fantasy and Square games, I played just about every game of theirs I could.

When I discovered FF games around 2000, until about 2006 or so, I had the same intention. I started with FFIV, then beat FFVI, then beat FFV, and I was going to beat FFIII and FFVII and further expand my "repertoire", but then I kinda got bogged down in FFTA and FFVII kept crashing on me. FFIII was going well (I was playing the translated NES version, which is awesome!) but one day I put it down and for some reason never picked it up again because I gradually lost track of it while being busy with meatspace obligations like schoolwork.

And looking at some of the newer games (such as IX or X) I feel like I would be rather bored by the slow transitions and stuff. Things like random battles never really interested me that much, and for whatever reason, they just seem all the more jarring when in a 3D game with better-looking graphics -- possibly because grid-based 2D sprite graphics could be mentally written off as a schematic representation of what the place is like, rather than looking like what it would really be.

I do intend to get around to playing some more FF; I recently bought a physical copy of FFT.

FF: Beaten several times, played multiple versions.
FFII: Put several hours in it, never finished.
FFIII: Barely messed with it. Probably will buy off of PSN
FFIV: Beaten several times, played multiple versions.
FFV: Put several hours in it, never finished.
FFVI: Beaten several times, played multiple versions.
FFVII: Beaten
FFVIII: Beaten
FFIX: Put several hours in, never finished.
FFX: Put several hours in, never finsihed.
Tactics: Beaten
Mystic Quest: Beaten

I basically gave up on the series while playing X. X had it's merits but so much stuff was cut from the NA version I got mad and quit.

I did play XI for a good while, pretty much the only MMO I ever played. X-2, XIII, XIII and the new MMO I've not even touched.

Of the non-MMO core series, I've given only token time to II and III and none at all to XII or X-2. I haven't yet finished XIII-2 or started Lightning Returns, but other than that I've beaten each of the other games. I haven't been able to give much time to any sideline series besides the original FFT.

Among numbered games, I haven't played any of FF2, FF11, FF14, or FF10-2. The only games I haven't completed that I started were FF12 and FF13-3, but I'm in the middle of 13-3 right now.

Believe it or not I've actually played and beat all of the first 13 games and every sequel that there is (with the exception of lightning returns, still in progress and XI)all of the tactics games, dissidia and the sequel, crisis core, mystic quest and even all of the crystal chronicles. The only other games i haven't played which i wouldn't mind playing would be A Realm Reborn and 4 heroes of light.

I haven't played the MMO games in the series, but that aside I've completed IV - XIII, with VI - IX getting multiple completions. I haven't any time for the XIII series, as anybody in chat knows all too well.

I've played I - III, but not completed any of them. I & II because I came to them late, gave them token time for history and nostalgia, but just couldn't bear to finish. III I would have completed if not for a save file corruption killing my willpower.

As for side series, I've started several times, but never actually finished FFT, and I've completed Crisis Core. I've also dabbled in a little bit of Dissidia, Chocobo Racing, and Ehrgeiz, but very very barely.

I really feel like I should play II and III, but II was severely frustrating to me. I had a little run in it that I was doing just fine but then got stomped near the end of a dungeon and my wonderful temper set in. I should just grind and blow through it, but a lot of people tell me if you over do it and especially "artificially" inflate your stats (hitting yourself, etc) instead of progressing normally the game gets broken but it sure seems tough at first.

III also looks like a grindfest as well, but a lot of people love it. I should just grab it off PSN someday.

I've beaten FF Tactics but none of its spinoffs (Advance, A2). Never finished Mystic Quest or Revenant Wings. Not sure what else counts.

EDIT: wow. I'm a moron. I replied to this three months ago. Oh well; it's still true.

XI's the only main series game I've yet to play.
I've only played remakes of I-VI though.

Not sure if I'll get Lightning Returns.
I'm in the minority of people that actually enjoyed XIII and XIII-2, but I think the time limit of LR would stress me out.

I've never played FFI, FFII, FFIII, FFXI, and FFXIV. So the trend is pretty clear: I don't do the MMO scene, and the first few entries just don't have the plots to snag me.

To that list I have to add FFXIII-2 and FFXIII-3, but I already own a copy of the former, so it's mostly just a matter of waiting for summer.

The only title in the series which I have started without finishing is FFV. As everyone knows, I mostly hate that game, so it won't be a shocker tongue.gif

I've played all of the mainline FF titles up to XII, (expect for XI), and dislike MMORPG's.

As far as offline, I've even played Final Fantasy Adventure, which is an extremely unforgiving game. Almost as bad as FFI. I disliked Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, but played the first one anyway.

I'm thinking about it, and with the exception of Four Heroes, any Final Fantasy game I've not played, I've not played due to lack of interest.

I'm an old hard liner, I suppose, and after FFVII, I generally started disliking the games from the main title. Even the ones I liked after that, I just saw some odd flaws inside those games that, while often forgivable, they drove me nuts.

I could go on and on about them, and, of course, they're just my opinion- some people like what I disliked, and that's all fine.

"The Bad Guy Speech"- Gah, this speech pisses me off. It follows the "bad guy thinks he's justified" formula, but from Sephiroth onward, it's the "I'm only doing this for humanity's own good" speech. I hate that.

I'm a hardcore table top player, and this means that certain things about the experience point/level-based system of advancing a character can sometimes drive me insane. This isn't the worst that can be done, after all, we do have the incredibly clunky "use and advance" system for Final Fantasy II.

Well, before I go off, those are just two examples of what I dislike about the ones I do dislike. Again, those are just my opinions.
