Does anyone know if there is an actual effort on the part of fans to remake FF6 anywhere? I've seen a few 3D demos and game engines and whatnot and everyone seems to want to remake FF6. But is it actually happening anywhere out there?

Like most fans, I have a ton of ideas on what I'd love to see in a remake. Problem is I can't program to save my life, and even if I could, I wouldn't have the time. I'd love to find someone out there actually working on a project like this that won't get scrapped before it gets off the ground. Or even a sizable group of people with the technical knowhow to make something like that happen.

Here's hoping for good news.

The only Square game which had a fan remake that was literally almost done was the Chrono Trigger remake which looked wonderful but was shut down years ago.

I think you mean a sequel; there was a fan-sequel to CT called Crimson Echoes which got C&D'd by Squenix, and that was nearly done, but the most I heard of a fan remake of CT was Chrono Trigger Resurrection which got nowhere before it was C&D. At most there were some remixed tunes.
