Am I the only one who waited for Shadow, but jumped off before he came? I left the Floating Continent with about seven seconds on the clock. Afterward, I found out he comes back about two seconds later.

I did this the first time I played, except I waited until I had about 30 seconds left. I was really disappointed, and replayed the game almost immediately after beating it the firs time using friends' advice and a guide to make sure I didn't miss anything. This was well before I was on the internet, though, so CoN wasn't involved.

Yeah, the first time I played the game I left Shadow as well...not intentionally, I just wasn't sure how long I had to wait and jumped the gun...it was a sad second act.

I've never left him, but I remember that first time I didn't know that it was scripted for a certain time. I hadn't found Caves of Narshe yet, so I didn't have a guide. So, I remember being really nervous, not sure what I had to do, because I didn't want him to die.

I did wait for Shadow, but I had prior knowledge from a friend. I don't know what I would have done if I didn't know any better. I've always liked that part about the game, it gives you sense of control.

Oh, yeah, I totally didn't wait my first time around. I panicked immediately upon getting to the edge, and went for it.

I knew about him beforehand via the internet, and as he is one of my favourites in the game, I saw no reason to not wait.

First time I played, I figured he was supposed to die, so I did leave him. Every subsequent time, being more knowledgeable and read guides and such, I wait for him.

I too waited for shadow.
I like his character but i am not much a fan of his spell throws. Early on in the game it is good, but later on the damage unless it does thousands,it is negligible. -------------------- We are stardust. Our bodies are made from the guts of exploding stars. Neil Degrasse Tyson. |

My first run ever was with a walkthrough, so I never dropped him on accident. I feel that keeping Shadow into the WoR is a reward for playing through the game twice; I think very few people will wait for Shadow the first time, but the prescence of new weapons exclusive to Shadow will tip the player off what to do on the second run.

I would disagree with that. And I don't think that the only reason people keep him is for gameplay reasons. He's one of the most interesting characters in the game. And you get a major revelation about him in the WoR. I didn't mean just gameplay reasons, I meant the whole package of Shadow's few scenes in the WoR as well as his combat contribution. Possible spoilers: highlight to view .Most of his dreams can be seen in WoB, when recruiting him between Kohlingen and the Opera House (Thamasa's Inn will never trigger his dreams), and Shadow's WoR nightmare reveals about as much as Relm's nightmare does I haven't heard of a lot of people waiting for Shadow without knowing beforehand there was gain in it; I have seen many posts from people jumping ASAP and asking where to recruit him later, since a timer simply rushes the player, especially since the last save at that point is before Atma Weapon and a long cutscene, two things average players will likely not want to see all over again. -------------------- |

You aren't the only one. I got so anxious standing there on the floating continent that I jumped the gun and made my escape without Shadow. I didn't know any better, so when I got to the part where I found Relm in the place instead of him I got so upset and I restarted my game. I haven't played it all the way through yet, but I have gotten past that part. Live and learn, right?

I left him behind on my first file. I think I got scared and didn't read the 'WAIT!' before I'd chosen to jump onto the ship. Never again though

I like Djibriel's analysis that in a way Shadow is kind of an extra character for playing through again if you had no idea the first time and researched a bit more.
My first playthrough, I didn't really think all *that* much of Shadow. I figured him as a Banon-esque character. Probably because my first playthrough went something like this: 1) Shadow joins in Sabin's scenario, he was fun through the Imperial Camp stuff but he left almost immediately in the Phantom Forest. I spent a bunch of money on throwable stuff for him, possibly all I had at the time. 2) Had no idea Shadow was playable in Kohlingen. After the victory in the snowfields of Narshe, of course I selected four adventurers to go to Kohlingen through Figaro Castle. Why wouldn't I? Who knows what ungodly crap this game is going to pull if I randomly decide not to bring a full party? So he sat there in the inn and didn't really say much to me. Ok... 3) He comes in and saves us in the burning house real quick, but he's not playable. 4) I saw him was on the ship after the empire "turns good" with him working under Leo. But it turned out he was some spy or something, funny ship scene aside. Never even get to use him. 5) He turns up again at the Floating Continent and playable. Useful, but I had to narrow my "normal" party to 3 to use this guy that I haven't had a chance to customize much. So I had to pick which of my favorites I had to leave out. It's cool though, turns out he doesn't need much help and he really packs a punch! But he drifts off again... So, he showed up a handful of times and was playable even less. The first time you get the option to wait or jump it does *not* say "Gotta wait for Shadow..." even, if I am recalling correctly. Just "Jump!" or "Wait!". Why would I wait? Most other games, when they give you options, one of the options just loops a dialogue and asks again (Remember Dragon Warrior? "Will thou save the princess? You: No. Guard: But thou must! Will you save the princess?"), and this one at first APPEARED to be no different. But then, that's why this game rocks and the layers of this game are truly wonderful. |

I waited for Shadow, but only by the lucky chance that, needing a bit of help with Atma Weapon, I'd read ahead a bit in the guide here on CoN and seen that I ought to wait. Even then, I was still freakin' out a bit as the time crunched down!
![]() I think Dji's read makes sense; there is enough Shadow-related equipment in the WoR, if nothing else, that one has to get suspicious: I probably would've expected him to come back, and then, never seeing him... don't know that it would've been evidence enough in itself to play through again, but certainly evidence enough to inquire further. -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up! Considering he is one of my favorite characters in the game and I was bored I waited for him unknowing that he arrives at five seconds left. I wish they would remake this game as a next-gen game the story would keep the new kids interested and would greatly appease older FF fans like me

Shadow is keyed to show up after the timer counts 5. That is, the moment it would change to 4 seconds left, the timer is wiped from the screen and the event triggering Shadow's return plays.
The first time, I got to the precipice at 6 seconds. I was presented with "Jump" or "Wait." The timer counted 5. I jumped. I didn't understand where Shadow was when I found Relm. I beat the game, still wondering where Shadow was. Then I got the strategy guide. *runs away crying his eyes out* -------------------- X is blue. |

I think I had something rather unique happen to me. When I got to the jump off point, the timer was already under 5 seconds (like 4 or 3) and I chose wait. Then the time ran out and I died! After that, I just assumed waiting meant dying, so I jumped off with plenty of time to spare. I was shocked when I learned later that waiting is supposed to save Shadow!
That's how I remember it anyway. I've never heard anyone else report this experience, but maybe someone can verify it for me. |

If the timer's already at 4 when you get to the end, that's it. There's no way to save Shadow, period. Funny...our experiences seem to mirror each other...
