Seriously everytime i pick this game up, it hooks me until the world of ruin. after that all drive to finish the game just leaves the building. i've repeted this process 4 times now and nothings changed. Ive beaten 1,7,10,12,12,13,13-2 and never had this issue. Just felt like venting. I love the ff6 universe but cant finish it. Any thoughts?

I think there are probably quite a few people that have similar issues, because the WoR is so loosely constructed plot-wise relative to the WoB. It's very easy to plow through the WoB because you always have a very specific direction to go, even though that direction changes from time to time. Once you get to the WoR, it's like going from a river into the sea - there are a half dozen directions you can go or not go as you please. It can be jarring for some players, I think.

What both of you have said makes sense to me; in fact, had it not been for the incredible storytelling on the Solitary Island, I may have very well been in the same position. All I can say is that, while the style of storytelling changes in the second half of the game, the quality does not. If you have any interest in seeing how the characters cope with their crushing defeat (an unusual degree of authenticity coming from a videogame of the time) you should really try to keep pushing through. Using a walkthrough - if only just to check the chapter titles so as to give yourself a general order of progression to sail by - could help make that sea look more river-like (to borrow Josh's metaphor tongue.gif ).

Hi, I stumbled upon this site yesterday and saw this topic on the frontpage. Being a big ff6 fan I had to register to give my opinion.

I perfectly understand omnislash5209's problem, and I'm exactly at the opposite. For me the second part of ff6 maybe the best part of any rpg I every played. you feel like you're free to go wherever you want and do whatever you want (or not do it), and I really liked it.

and I must add that, still on the opposite side on that matter, I never finished ff13 because the whole game felt like a long corridor with battles and cinematics. it was too directive for me.

So, I'm not saying that ff13 is bad, people seem to appreciate it, and it definitely seems to be something omnislash5209 seems to like, but I miss ff6 style rpgs.

The floating continent is just so epic.

In the World of Ruin, once you start reconstructing your party it picks up again but for me the very beginning (not the island with Celes and Cid but right after that) is a little slow imo.

As as veteran FFVI player, I've had that happen to me as well in regards to this game. I'll be right on target with the World of Balance then when the World of Ruin comes along, I'll take it slow or might be put on hiatus. That wasn't just a one time occurrence but it's happened multiple times. The last example I can think of was when I purchased FFVI Adv and never made it through to the aftergame. I couldn't keep track of what I did do or didn't do to get the achievement of aftergame/dungeons/whatever. So I finally said f*** it.

Edit: I think I've become used to starmen.net's swear filter. Good thing I bothered checking my post before leaving it unedited.

Rangers and Death Penalty have summed up both impressions of the WoR perfectly here, but I'll just share my experience.
It was the first FF I'd ever played, just a couple of years ago and I thought the floating continent was the end of the game. Imagine my surprise then, when the game and story were given a new lease of life, I was completely blown away.
What drove me at this point was to track down all the characters again, a quest that the WoR airship theme is named for: "Searching for friends. "

You know.. I think i might have to dust off my copy..

I kind of liked the free roam finding all your friends bit.

But i understand why you might lose your drive ^^

I found it hard to do too much of WoR at once as its just so deppressing lol.

Luckily I have it on GBA so can pick it up and put it down easily.

A suggestion: MAybe if you follow someones basic guide of what to do, it might give you order and structure without ruining it for you. Just an idea.

I've run into similar problems with other games. I think I actually finished FFVI partly because I didn't run into major schoolwork timesinks at the time. I remember I played all the way up to the Floating Continent right before I graduated from high school, then finished the game after entering university. So I still had enough time (and interest) to get through the rest of the game.

I think it might be more fun to replay the game with a friend. But I haven't really had the occasion to do that. I've tried replaying the game on my own--with i90east's Expert Version hack--but I've just lost interest since I felt like I was doing something I've already done before, and the motive of discovery just wasn't there anymore.

But maybe that might help: Get someone who wants to watch to come sit with you through the experience. I think it'll be more fun.

I run into this problem now that I've beaten it. But obviously I didn't when I was playing it for the first time (because it's no secret that FFVI's my all-time favorite).

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I have some issue finishing games as well; the closer to the ending I get the less I want to play it. Not wanting it to end and all. happy.gif

Now, if it's just FF VI, that's probably just how the structure of the game changes from linearish, some room for movement, to a very open, very little structure. It's a bit of a shock.

We can talk for a very long time about how a game should be created/played/enjoyed. Everyone has their reasons for feeling a certain kind of dissatisfaction.

Ranger51's comment applies to me, too. But I was determined to finish it, so I just kept going back to it, used a map and (gasp!) a walkthrough to note where everybody was, and it took me a while but was a great feeling to finally finish it. So there you go, there's hope biggrin.gif

I love ffVI I love every part of it. I like the WOB because it is like a massive tutorial without you realizing it is. It is a beautiful story, that teaches you how each character works slowly and vividly. Then you get dumped into the world of Ruin, "The Actual Game", and are forced to think for yourself. It is daunting at first but as you pick it up it is more enthralling. The challenge being that you start the whole game over i.e. start with one character and build up again. However, instead of being just a loose story line it becomes an open end rpg. The tutorial is over and its all on you to save the world.

Also as a side note it could be off putting because you are so depressed that the world is in ruin, or the pallete is so dull and depressing it causes you to not wanna continue on.

I was perfectly happy wandering around WoR looking for my friends until I came across a certain walkthrough guide and became curious - not to mention names.

Submitted an idea for a podcast that was later recorded by the CoNcast team.
The world exploding definitely sucks the life out of a player...

I remember the first time I played through and had similar feelings. Not to mention I didn't play Celes much my first couple plays (learned she's a great end-game character) and walking around with just her sucked. Couple that with the fact the monsters get twice as tough and once you get the airship you are given completely free reign to do whatever and have to FIND the rest of your party.

A little dedication and will power and the game actually get's interesting, especially the end-game side quests. Give it a shot.

This. I find that when I finish getting all the pre-final dungeon content in games I have this moment of hesitation where I don't want the story to end.

The no-direction argument probably applies to my never-finished playthrough of FFV. At some point I hit a moment where I just didn't know where to go and lost interest.

I think one thing that helped me with WoR FF6 is that you start with my favorite character. I also make it a point to

and once that's been accomplished I have a renewed sense of hope for saving the world.

To make it more interesting I try to accomplish things in WOR out of order. For example, it can be pretty challenging to acquire the offering relic with just celes setzer edgar and sabin in your party at an early level.

That's interesting.

I agree with the poster who said the depressing setting in the WoR is a potential reason for a player to lose motivation to play. That "Dark World" song is such a drag.

I was always motivated to continue on and get my party back, I really wanted to keep playing and get my preferred characters back. (Or in the case of Gogo, get them in the first place).

^ I'd argue that once you get the airship and get the (appropriately-named) "Searching for Friends" theme, it's quite a morale booster.
