When most people think of impairments they think of someone who cannot walk, or talk or something that is visual. Typically the impairments that are under the hood often go unrecognized till you get older and yet people still do not understand. So what is the list of impairments you have and how they affect your life and how people react?
Not to mention some impairments to might have heard about but do not think is a big deal? 1) Low Blood pressure - Sadly with our current health nut fitness trends in the United States...Sugar and Salt are being attacked and highly reduced to help people with High Blood Pressure to stop consuming foods with high salt and sugar. - One thing people do not understand or even know there are people with 'Low Blood pressure" - If we do not eat enough Salt or Sugar we can easily pass out and be affected for months with high fatigue or worse. - I remember passing out on a train going to Midway Airport and my doctor tells me I need to eat more bags of potato chips. - With bans of sugar and salt being that they negatively affect those who over eat those with Low Blood Pressure find it harder to find food they can eat to function. - Most people think we are lazy or just do not want to do anything problem is we get fatigued very easily especially when we do not get enough salt. 2) Far Sided Sight - Most people are near sided so seeing things far is a problem so most people understand people who cannot see things far away but those who are Far sided cannot see things up close well nor can they notice objects that are literally right in their face. - I've always been able to see farther than most people in fact my vision is 15/20. - Someone asks me to look for something and that its right in front of me I cannot notice it. Though I have glasses to help see things closer to me it doesn't help much and I typically have to feel around. 3) Left Handed - Most right-handed people feel all left-handed people should be able to use right-handed objects well enough I always point to Zelda on the Wii. Link was left-handed in the demo and GC version but so many right-handed people found it so hard to hold the wiimote with their left hand and it made them so uncomfortable they literally inverted the world to make it look like Link was right-handed. - Teachers often do not have the training to teach a left-handed person how to write so they typically develop sores and calluces. - We often develop poor handwritering due to inexperienced teachers who cannot teach us how to write and often chided us as children http://www.anythingl...andwriting.html - All scissors, certain knives are molded for the right hand so left-handed children often are chided as children for poor arts and crafts. Till this day if you give me the wrong scissors chances are I might break them or I cannot use them because I am left-handed. When they suggest I use my right hand I suggest you try to use your left hand and tell me how it feels? They do not understand. 4) Tongue Tied - Before the 1940s two things very common in the United States to do at birth is to circumcise a child and cut his or her tongue tie. - Problem is the generation that was to young to go into World War II and to old to be apart of the baby boomer generation stopped performing the act of cutting a childs tongue tie at birth believing it not natural which has led to people of the baby boomer generation and this current one to think being tongue tied is a funny joke or phrase or a myth. - Fact is being Tongue Tied (Ankyloglossia http://en.wikipedia....i/Ankyloglossia) is very real has causes many speech problems that occur throughout life when people do not fix a child who is tongue tied. Tongue tie laser removal surgery on an older adult http://www.youtube.c...h?v=iOJXqOAnHvQ - Being tongued tied means the tip of your tongue is literally attached to the bottom of your mouth. So sticking your tongue out, saying certain words, or even kissing is an issue. - People who are tongue tied sometimes cannot prononce certain words and we use our teeth sometimes to pronounce words. - If an adult has a tongue tie removed some of his speech habits most likely will not change even though his tongue is free. - Being tongue tied can make a person become antisocial or ruin that person's self esteem because he or she might not be able to talk correctly or pronounce certain words. - My 5th grade teacher used to call my stupid in front of the class because I could not say the word she presented me on a card. Problem is I did not know I was tongue-tied cause I thought it was normal that people's tongue were attached to the top of their tongue. -------------------- His Divine Shadow |

Well, I'm left-handed too. It's something I've always been marginally proud of, since I look at it as a small challenge and a somewhat distinguishing feature. I do have poor handwriting, as you mentioned though, and teachers throughout my schooling complained about it even though I did really try to make it look ok. That's not to say I couldn't have tried harder, I suppose. It certainly was a bit frustrating nevertheless, and I am glad to see the increasing integration of digital content creation in schools.
I've also had knee problems in my left knee since I was a teenager due to a rock-climbing accident. It's prevented me from being able to do as much long distance running as I've wanted to, and when I try to run my stride looks very lopsided and awkward. It's also much weaker than my other leg. I had surgery on it the year before last, and that didn't work, so I just had one more surgery last week. Hopefully this will be the final solution. I really would like to be able to go for runs again. I'm also somewhat near-sighted. |

I didn't actually know that there was an actual condition associated with the phrase tongue tied. I always figured it was just a metaphor…
Anyway, I have a slight problem with tinnitus in quiet environments. Tinnitus is essentially any noise you can hear that other people can't. Mine is the stereotypical "ringing" and afflicts my right ear, though it can sound more like a beating drum or a crackle for some. I don't think I need to go into any amount of great detail about how annoying it can be not to be able to get any amount of peace and quiet, no matter what measures you take, so I'll focus on other aspects of the condition. However first I'd like to mention that the thought of it makes some people suicidally depressed, despite not being a fatal or debilitating condition in and of itself. It's a symptomatic condition that's a known to possibly be caused by loss of hearing, however it's not necessarily an indicator of hearing loss since there can be other causes for it as well. A perforated eardrum, high blood pressure, something coming into contact with your eardrum, broken middle ear bones ect. Pendent on the nature of the problem, it can be temporary and goes away as the issue is resolved. For instance, you might get a case of tinnitus with your cold, caused by excessive cerumen (earwax) buildup and when you get well, the earwax will have the opportunity to drain from the head naturally and the tinnitus will go away. Even do not clean your ears yourself, you could impact the earwax or perforate your eardrum, making things worse. The F.D.A. also advises against having them candled, seeing as how it's an unfounded, counterproductive and potentially injurious technique. (Note: Cerumen is generally more of an oil, than a wax and wax found in an ear candle after a session of candling, is actually likely to be melted candle wax.) However often times it's permanent with no known cause or the cause in itself is incurable and in these cases, you're just stuck with it. The only known treatment then is to try and mask it with some other noise e.g. music, a fan, static ect. or learn to ignore it by refocusing your attention off of that particular frequency with ("tinnitus retraining therapy"). Regardless, it may remain advisable to see an E.N.T. (ear, nose and throat) Doctor to make sure there isn't a known cause for the condition which could make it worsen with time, as it often does. As such it's a condition that's best to avoid. Although the two don't always coincide and hearing loss isn't the only known cause, it is one of the more common ones. Therefore protection from noise induced hearing loss is a prudent course of action, whether you're currently suffering from some degree of tinnitus or not. N.I.H.L. doesn't just come from gunfire or power tools. Household appliances like your blender and vacuum cleaner or listening your favorite music too loudly in just about any setting can be just as bad. As such, hearing protection is pertinent if you ever want any peace and quiet and should be used any time you might be exposed to loud noise. That includes clubs, concerts, parties and the like which play excessively loud music. Granted, it might seem to defeat the point of going to a live event if you can't hear the music with relatively good fidelity and earplugs often make things sound muffled. However, even musicians and D.J.s wear earplugs, since they want their ears to work properly more than "just this once on a special occasion." If this is a problem, reusable earplugs can be made to have relatively flat (not perfect) sound attenuation for musicians. The best of these are custom molded for the purpose, albeit there are flanged earplugs like Etymotic's ETY ER-20 or some of Hearos' High Fidelity earplugs, that are cheaper and more readily available if tailor made earplugs aren't a realistic option. There are a couple of tradeoffs with earplugs like these though, which make them unsuitable for general use. One is that the long stems make sleeping on your side impossible because the stems stick out. The other is that they offer a relatively low noise reduction ratio, only being officially rated of reducing sound by 12 decibels, when industrial earmuffs and more traditional earplugs often offer a N.R.R. within the range of 25-33 decibels. Additionally, there are some studies showing that taking a combination of nutritional supplements prior to noise exposure, with a few days of follow up may also help to lower the effects of noise induced hearing loss. Specifically taking antioxidant vitamins A, C and E and the blood regulating mineral magnesium may help to reduce the degree of cellular damage incurred. However last I checked, these tests were only in the preliminary animal testing stages so whether it's effective for humans is unknown. That having been said, it probably wouldn't hurt to try it in conjunction with other task-appropriate methods of hearing protection on rare occasion, so long as you're careful not to overdose. You can read more about this in greater detail at The University of Michigan's website if curious. In closing, I'd like to ask a question: Does anybody else find it even marginally ironic that you need to protect your hearing, simply in order to ensure that you're able to get a moment's silence when you really need it? Obesity
Schizophrenia Bipolar Schizo-effective Gender dysphoria Not a good combination though my psychiatrist said nothing recently of depression I think it goes hand in hand with Bipolar as you can be manic or depressed at different moments. The schizophrenia combined with my Gender dysphoria and my faith has often led me to my past disputes in these forums. Due to the fact the church I was going to often had an advantage toward my mental illness which made me the more paranoid of the whole Heaven and Hell stuff. Kind of like taking advantage of my fears. Though recent counseling has led me to realize my illness better on top of my delusions of grandeur which use to make me think I could become a half angel half demon back when I use to practice and study Wicca. To like I said letting the church I went to take advantage of my mental illnesses. Like thinking God was punishing me when my brother died years back and my moms cancer one guy at my old church said this was so. Also they took advantage of my Bipolar when I felt in my depressive state saying I was sinning by feeling I am female and that was what caused my depression. When it wasn't sin it was my Bipolar having it's basic down. But that's the world for ya always trying to take advantage of people like me who have mental illness. -------------------- I treasure those who I love that love me in return. <3 |
