Just as week after Airborne Brigade was announced for North America, mobile gamers have more to look forward to: Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy, that game you still can't spell, has been made available for iOS worldwide.

The game will be free to play, though it looks like a lot of the content is to be obtained by paid download. No word on whether it'll appear for Android, though it's certainly possible given that Airborne Brigade will be appearing on that platform as well.

Wow, sucks for Nintendo, this one was a big reason why I was considering buying a 3DS. Now I have no need!

Can you hear it breathing?
And hey, put the laptop down for a while
In the night there is something wild
I feel it, it's leaving me

I do hope they put this on Android, because I would really like to play this, once I get back to the states and my Android functions again, heh. I wouldn't have bought a 3DS just to play it, but SE will definitely be getting my monies if they put it on a system that I do have.

It released to the US store overnight. I just got it and have played through the tutorial and gotten to the main game - they desperately want you to buy the additional DLC. smile.gif

The two songs you get are One-Winged Angel and Zanarkand, and your characters are FF1's Warrior, FF2's Firion, FF3's Onion knight, and Cecil. That's... it. With the difficulty levels, you could probably play through each track a few times, but it's a pretty thin package for free. I'm not sure I'll be going out to buy much more to start.

There's also a Compose Scores feature which seems to be a level creator in which you can use the songs you have. I haven't tried it, didn't have time, so I'm not sure if that's part of the free package or also requires in-app purchase.

The game ran fine on my iPhone 4S, just a little slow to initialize. I think it would be much better on both a larger screen and a faster CPU, though, so I intend to try it on my wife's new iPad 4 that she's getting for our anniversary in a couple weeks.

Bottom line is that it's just about exactly what you probably expected - a good game saddled with lots of IAP downloads. I'm not quite as excited as I was - having the chance to test it on my phone is better than wasting money, but now that I've tried it I would have been happier if you'd gotten, say, 30 songs and 20 characters for $10.

Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? Or perhaps buying a really good looking shirt?

Well, what does the cost look like on the DLC?

$0.99 a song individually, and $1.99 a character (in the US, at least). There are also song bundles for $2.99 that contain four songs from the same game apiece.

I played the demo on my 3DS and thought, "hmm... this seems like it would be perfect for the mobile market"... yep.

Having looked at it for a day now, I find myself a little disappointed. I don't mind so much of it being in-app purchases and starting essentially as a demo. I don't begrudge Squenix the business model - they're not the first to do this, and they're not even the most egregious offender. However, now that I know that the story mode simply isn't available at any price in this release, it kind of makes me wonder what the point is. Why level up your characters? Why play over and over no matter how many songs you have?

I think at this point I'd be more interested to just get the soundtrack. I love the character design still, and the game is fun and I'll definitely put it on the iPad as I mentioned, at least to see it on the bigger HD screen. I just don't know that they've given me any reason to drop much real cash on it.

I don't know how I missed it, but one character from each numeral'ed game (except the MMOs) is available in the free package. I could swear I had tried to find others when I first played, but I must have done something odd.
