The site Kotaku ranked the Final Fantasy games from best to worst. The worst being Final Fantasy 13 and the best being Final Fantasy 6. No surprises there since this seems to be a very common opinion within the FF Fan community. Kotaku Ranks the Final Fantasy Games Thoughts ? And your own personal list ? I really disagree that Final Fantasy IV doesn't hold up today. It may not be complexed as future Final Fantasy titles but for what it is, it's really enjoyable and it's simple but deep inside. It's depth is emotion. Hence why it still holds up today. Even though I do enjoy Final Fantasy VIII I thought that the school flying was one of the worst moments in FF history. It felt so cheesy and really strange. I didn't mind the Orphanage plot-twist I actually thought it was sweet, but Balamb becoming mobile like some strange boat ? Yeah, no... what are you smoking ? Kotaku believes that Balamb flying was awesome. My thoughts ? Stay off the Dope. Final Fantasy XII and Final Fantasy X should trade places. Final Fantasy XIII shouldn't be on the bottom. While it wasn't the best Final Fantasy game ever made, it was better and more creative and entertaining than FF II. Own personal list FF IV FF IX FF VIII FF VI FF VII FF V FF XII FF I FF XIII FF III FF X FF II -------------------- Top Three fave Final Fantasies Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy V [ GBA ] |

I drew a very rough graph of the kotaku list.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v106/Moo...ide/FFGraph.png Things will surely get better, and not bottom out, rite? Edit I also thought Balamb flying was one of the more redeeming qualities of VIII, which I otherwise didn't enjoy that much. Then again, I do admit to a certain fondness for dope. Seems pretty fair to me, except I'd rank 12 above 10 and 10 above 8. And slip 2 in below 13 to be fair. 13 is still horrendous and laden with so many mistakes and illogical design choices, but 2 probably is worse. Not by much, but it's worse.

I still disagree with FFIV being better than FFV; while FFIV has had a lot more attention, garnered a lot more fans, and been more influential, I still feel FFV is better.
FFIV has a story where quite a lot happens, and very often what happens is deeply emotional. However, it still feels a bit incoherent when taken as a whole; FFV has better coherence, giving a much stronger context to those emotions, and its events seem a bit less random and kitchen-sink-y. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. Number 1... well, unlike some people! (jk) I think: Best Game Ever? Yes Way!
I agree with 1 and 2 1000%, and I really like seeing someone give IX that kind of position. I place VII at three. I would put X at number 4, right behind VII. I think Tidus gets a bad rap. He's not aggressively whiny... he's whiny, but he's not over the top with it. And with 5-8, I struggle with VIII, IV, XII, and now recently V (which I just started dabbling into, and it's impressive). -------------------- |

IV does hold up today, and to me is still the best.
As for VI, the multi party ending seemed epic 20 years ago, but today makes the final dungeon seem minimal. The whole experience of going deep into the moon in IV, hitting the mirrored floors, the music, Golbez, it's timeless. |

Man, I really need to play IX someday.
I thought X had some beautiful visuals when it came out. 7 was just badass. 5 just kept getting stranger and stranger- a little disorienting, but wasn't bad- the jobs system was awesome. The original would probably be my number 2 on the list, with VI being number one. VI Original VII V X ...not sure from here, don't remember much about the others atm ...and 8 at the bottom. I cringe every time I see a gunblade. |

My list (worst to best) would be:
12 - Lightning 11 - Tidus 10 - Vaan 9 - Firion 8 - Zidane 7 - Squall 6 - Cloud 5 - Fighter 4 - Onion Knight 3 - Bartz 2 - Cecil 1 - Terra You'll notice I favor the games that move fast and keep it simple and player-controlled. And I put the first game in the series over 7, because 7 actually ended up disappointing me in a way that the first game didn't. The Job System scored high on my list, but didn't take the top spots. You'll notice that spots 3-5 are games that employ the Job System. Stories are why I play Final Fantasy; 4 is the setup and 6 is the punchline. -------------------- X is blue. |

Quote (Narratorway @ 17th February 2013 01:17) Gotta give the guy props for putting IX in the second spot. Putting aside how great the game plays, it's rare to hear (even among the paltry few who talk about it) anyone acknowledge just how well written the thing is. Count me in with those few. The interchange between Zidane and Steiner is probably my favorite dialogue in the series. FFIX is the closest thing to VI for me. It was the first FF game after I played VI that gave me pause, and made me wonder which one was actually my favorite... actually, I won't be wishy washy: it's got the best dialogue in FF. It's so well-pointed and it's got near-perfect comedic timing. And the active time events are perfect examples of that. There are also too few of people that talk about how gorgeous the game is... now that I think about it, just too few people talk about that game. -------------------- |

I see a lot of people rave about ff IX yet sadly i have not played it yet, and i have heard mixed news about FFXII, i hear 12 is a game you either love and adore or you find it an abomination to gaming. Either way, i have yet to play that as well, but on the brighter side i have it and i plan on playing it.

People think it's more of a Star Wars sequel than a FF game, (which it is) but it has some really good moments. -------------------- |

The reasons the Kotaku guy gave for his choices seem to be based on his memories of the games eg 'my life would've been different had I not played this' 'does anyone remember Vaan?' 'sentimental value' etc etc.
This is fine of course, I think most lists are essentially the same thing. I wonder if it's possible to write up a list based on some other 'best' criteria. For example how wide the vocabulary of the script is; how often the camera changes in dialogue sequences; how much of the game's abilities, magic, items and equipment is actually used on average (do this with accomplished or pro players of other games who've not played the FF game in question before); how many of the characters 'die'; how many characters there are ('character' is someone who has more than 15 lines of unique dialogue let's say); and maybe how many worlds, vehicles, and towns there are. Kotaku is the kind of place that has the resources to do this properly, I think it would be really interesting. And here's the obligatory 1. FFVII 2. FFIX and 3. FFXII. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Me on the Starcraft. |

I think my list would be:
FF7 FF6 FF - Tactics FF9 FF10 FF5 FF8 FF4 FF1 FF3 FF2 FF13 I can't really place 11 or 12 because I never played them for a very long time. I would like to pick 12 up and try again though. 3rd to 4th place change constantly because I can never decide which I like best. |
