I've only just got into classic FF gaming, having recently bought FF's 1,2,4,5,6 (in at the deep end eh?). Well I've just been given the chance to get my hands on nos 7,8 and 9 for a knockdown price. I know some of you might think this an obvious question but should I go ahead? I've only just started on no. 5 (dunno why no. 5 first tbh) and don't want to end up buying a load of games I may never get round to playing.
So could anyone make any recommendations? I've really enjoyed FF5 so far so does that bode well for the PS One FFs too? How much alike are they to the 8/16-bit games? Also I'll be playing on a PS3, so nother issue is will they work well on PS3. Any advice much appreciated! -------------------- I've got nothing more to say... |

This PS3 compatibility guide should be able to answer your last question. I personally think FF VII and FF IX are great and FF VIII isn't, but they are markedly different from the older games. Check some old reviews and listen to what others on this forum say.

Don't forget that the PlayStation era FF games are also available over PlayStation network (Or at least they are in the US, I'm pretty sure they are in the UK as well). They might be available for even less than your knockdown price, and they will still be playable.
Well, I think. I don't have a PlayStation 3, so I don't know for sure. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? Or perhaps buying a really good looking shirt? |

Thanks for the replies. Oh and thanks R51 for the heads-up on the Pkaystation Network. I'll have a look and see what I can find.

Hey Aspic.
I haven't checked the guide that Lasz posted, but I have one of the older PS3s and it plays all of my FF games. While everyone on this site would agree that there are quite a few differences between the first six titles in the series and the next seven, I think it's pretty safe to say that just about everyone that enjoyed games from the first half of the series (FFVI and FFIV are probably generally preferred) enjoyed at least a couple games from the second half (the general consensus is in support of FFVII and FFIX out of the three you mentioned, though I personally enjoyed FFVIII as well). FFVI is the most closely related 8/16-bit FF to the PSX FFs. None of the PSX FF games have a job system like FFV does; instead, the characters have set battle styles (which is more like FFIV and FFVI). Either way, if it's a good deal, I would say it's worth it. I know they're all on PSN now, but well-kept hard copies of FFVII definitely aren't exactly cheap usually. -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up! Thanks Death Penalty. So cheap copies of FFVII are hard to find eh? Well since I'm being offered the three PSone games for a combined price of £80 I think I'd better get my skates on and buy them now!
As for the differences between them and the older games well I've seen them in action now and they look great. Can't wait to start playing FFVII. Thanks for all the help guys. This post has been edited by Aspic on 23rd July 2012 10:01 -------------------- I've got nothing more to say... |
