Square-Enix just threw this up on their Facebook today. It's an interesting little read, and most of it does ring pretty true for me. I'm curious to hear the community's thoughts on this, see if we share some of the same loves in this franchise.
Top 10 Coolest Moments in Final Fantasy History Some moments that were missing for me: Final Fantasy - when you first get to the bridge to leave Corneria behind. It really hit me with that sense of "adventure starts here". The training wheels were off, and a big, open world spanned before you. Final Fantasy VII - after you fail miserably and Sephiroth calls down Meteor, I just loved that moment of waking up in Junon to find out that, hey, you gave it your best, but failed anyways and meteor just hangs ominously in the sky, with that great intimidating overworld music constantly reminding you of what you had to accomplish. Final Fantasy IX - the ending, the culmination of all the schoolyard love shared by Zidane and Garnet comes together in that last moment where she rushes to him, hugs him, then punches him in the chest, playfully, but hard enough to say, "you ass". Sticks out for me. Final Fantasy Tactics - in the end, when Delita and the princess kill one another? Powerful, powerful stuff. It's probably the most profound moment for me in that game, and of all the games - after all he did, to shape the his life and completely alter his destiny, his own puppet did him in. Craziness. Final Fantasy XII - my first steps in Robanstre. I just loved how grand the whole world of Ivalice was in this game. It was wondrous to explore and move through, to be part of such a thriving place. -------------------- Games on the Go Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy: Four Warriors of Light Baldur's Gate Too much to play, so little time! Nice list. Though the Flying Gardens bit in FF8 ? Never liked it. Always thought that it was strange and really silly. While the list had some good moments of FF history in the list, while leaving Midgar is a epic moment in FF7 it feels like it's rated too highly on the list to me. FF6's world ending via Kefka should of been No. 1 -------------------- Currently playing Chrono Trigger !! Currently looking forward to Don't Know. |

I don't know why Aeris' death or Tidus finding out about his father were 'cool'. That's not exactly what I'd call those scenes. Also I wouldn't say leaving Midgar is particularly cool, moreso because there's an amazingly cool bike chase scene complete with amazing music right before it. When I saw it I thought they meant the time you first get the Highwind and can zoom around the world. It's a good idea for a list but I think they kind of veered into 'good' or 'memorable' moments rather than outright cool.
A few personal moments for me include the time compression part and entering the final castle in FFVIII, first landing on Kefka's Tower in FFVI, and the battle between the Silver Dragons and what seems to be all the characters from FFIX before entering Memoria. Here they are if you can't remember. FFVIII Final Dungeon - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7l_hKfuraKQ (LP sorry) FFIX Silver Dragons - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MqtmQ7EvUU (probably my all-time favourite coolest scene) -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Me on the Starcraft. |

I think I agree with Sweetdude's use of the term 'memorable' rather than 'cool'; I think that's probably what the person who compiled this list had in mind.
Quote Final Fantasy VII - after you fail miserably and Sephiroth calls down Meteor, I just loved that moment of waking up in Junon to find out that, hey, you gave it your best, but failed anyways and meteor just hangs ominously in the sky, with that great intimidating overworld music constantly reminding you of what you had to accomplish. I agree, Perigryn, this is a really well done part of the game. It's very reminiscent of what took place in FFVI; your party fails. It's a very powerful plot element, and I think it was well executed in both cases. Quote the battle between the Silver Dragons and what seems to be all the characters from FFIX before entering Memoria. Definitely a well done part of the game. It's a 'cool' scene in that it's very fast paced and well orchestrated (the comment on the video you linked is "Uematsu is a gentleman and a scholar." - lolz), but it's also very memorable in that the player gets a chance to see the reappearance of several other characters in dramatic form. I really enjoyed the inclusion of the garden scene on the list, though I think there were other equally worthy moments in FFVIII. Regardless of what you think of the game's overall plot or characters, it certainly knew how to make a plot moment work. The missile attack+Norg takeover and the lunar base sections of the game were very memorable as well, in addition to boasting some pretty impressive music and cutscenes. While I think the 'moment' (it's really more of an overall plot element) selected from FFX was good, I feel like it leaves out a lot of the most memorable moments in the game. The game's ending obviously comes to mind as an incredibly memorable part; all of the emotions throughout the game culminate, and victory is made bittersweet. One of my favorite FFX moments is when the player first descends into Zanarkand. There is no music while walking down the long slope from Mt. Gagazet, and when the player reaches the bottom where the scene from the very beginning of the game plays again, it's just magical. You realize that this is as far as the story goes; everything that you've played through thus far has already happened. Everything to follow, however, is in your hands; Tidus is no longer looking back, he's looking forward. The Spiral has finally been exited. Edit Also, the FFIII 'moment'? Bah. A lot of cool or memorable moments have already been described here or in the article, so I'll skip past to the ones I didn't see people mention. I haven't played a huge amount of FF games, though.
FF1: Finding and using the Airship. I remember at like 6 years old finding that *so* awesome at the time. You can go almost anywhere you want? Previous journeys that took forever are now done instantly? Theres entire towns I haven't even seen yet after my endless ship exploits? And most importantly, there are NO random encounters while on this thing? A-W-E-S-O-M-E. FF4: Defending Fabul. Every time I play through I always keep a Saved Game at that point in case I want to play that part later. Everything was pretty energetic, the fights were tough, and you got the feeling you were in a war. And then you see it....the heroes alone in their last stand defending the crystal, only to be done in by the grand betrayal of Kain and the equally awesome introduction of Golbez. Every part of the Fabul scenes are incredible. FF4: This game gets a second mention as the other amazing part was the emergence of the Giant of Babil. Again, it's oozing with awesome. You can tell it's gonna be bad, but from out of nowhere you finally get to notice that in fact you're *not* the only ones trying to stop evil for a change, as one by one your friends and past party members appear to lend a helping hand in the tanks and airships, each one giving a nice little speech which makes you realize how far you've come in the game. FF6: Ok, I said I wouldn't do this and talk about something previously mentioned, but Kefka destroying the world is really the greatest, most epic moment in the entire franchise I've seen. How often do games give villains *that* amount of success in the form of such destruction, and for so long? I can only imagine how impressive it would look in a more graphical setting, too. FF13: Oerba. The whole game you've been warned of the dangers of failing as a L'Cie, and have even seen Cie'th previously. But along the way you've heard stories of Oerba and the way its built up you get excited to see it for yourself. And when you get there, it hits you with a kind of reflective sadness. The music, the atmosphere, even the monsters all tell the tale of the tragedy in a way that the characters couldn't. I have been really hoping that Oerba proves more meaningful to the story of FF13-2 than it has so far, but I guess time will tell (lolpun?).
