I hope this topic isn't regarded as spam-esque, but there was a similar topic on the pronounciation of Kefka's name. I'm not continuing in that thread because someone complained of going off topic... so... I'm really interested in this even though it doesn't really have much to do with the gameplay or whatever.
Anyway, I've found that everyone seems to have a different way of pronouncing the characters' names, and it's odd because once I've pronounced them a certain way, hearing it another way is like hearing about a foreign character. Here's how *I* pronounce all of their names: Kefka - "KEFF-kuh" Sabin- "Suh-BIN" Cyan- "Sye-ANN" Celes- "Suh-LESS" Umaro- "OOH-muh-ro" Locke- just like the word "lock" Strago- "STRAY-go" Banon- rhymes with "cannon" Tritoch- "TRY-tock" Ragnarok- "RAG-nuh-rock" Thamasa- "Tuh-MAH-suh" Do those seem weird to any of you? -------------------- |

Here are the ones that I pronounce differently. I think it's mostly because I'm Canadian, and heard what my Canadian friends called certain places and people before hearing Americans.
Sabin- "SAY-bin" Cyan- "SEE-in" Strago- "STRAW-go" (I've been trained more towards STRAY-go, now) Tritoch- "TRY-toch" (ch like checkers) -------------------- I had an old signature. Now I've changed it. |

Neither of those other threads are as general (or weren't, until they went off topic). Let's just keep to this one from now and merge future duplicates into it.
Also: let's actually talk about pronunciation from now on instead of past threads. ![]() |

Terra- Tear-ra (tear as in to tear apart paper).
Locke- Lock (my grandfather's name was Locke, which was pronounced 'lock', like a lock on a door). Kefka- Kef-ka Sabin- Sa-bin Cyan- Ci-an Celes- Depends. Either 'Cell-ease' or 'Cel-es', like in 'celestial'. Strago- Strah-go Relm- Realm -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will. This is pretty interesting the different mixes and matches of how people say the different names, I don't think I have come across one person with the same exact pronunciations, well here goes:
Terra - Tear-uh Locke - Lock on a door Edgar - Edger, as opposed to EdgAR Sabin - rhymes with cabin Gau - Like Ow with a hard G, not a J. Celes - Cell + es/is. I don't know how to explain...... oh , duh "Celestial," but with the pronunciation of cell. Sorry if that is hard to understand haha. Kefka - Kef-kuh Cyan - Sigh + and minus the d Relm - Realm Strago - Stray-go Umaro - You-muh-row Geshtal - Guest-all Maduin - Mad-oo-in Tritoch - Tritoch Narshe - Narsh Figaro - Fig-uh-row Phunbaba - Foon-ba-buh Most of the towns mess me up though, so I don't really have a set way of pronouncing. It is really good that I know the real way of representing the pronunciation symbols, huh? |

Terra - as in terra firma. I had a friend named Terra, actually, so this one I can vouch for.
Locke - LOCK-ee. Probably wrong, since John Locke has a silent E. Edgar - real name Sabin - SA-bin. a as in apple Banon - rhymes with Shannon Cyan - sigh-ann. Means teal, roughly. On a side note, between II and III, I invented a character named Cyan who was a rough combination of Cecil and Yang (I was 9, this wasn't thought out) Gau - rhymes with POW Celes - SEAL-ese. I think I'm the only one who says it like this. It just looks like it should work like Ceres (Roman goddess/asteroid) Setzer - like Seltzer Mog - Mawg Strago - Strah-go Relm - Realm Places: Narshe - NARSH-ee (rhymes with marshy) Thamasa - Thah-mass-ah -------------------- I hear the jury's still out on...science. Kefka - "KEFF-kuh" - I pronouce it more 'Kaf', but yours is probably more 'correct'.
Sabin- "Suh-BIN" - Thats seems odd to me, I think it's 'Say-bin', personally. Celes- "Suh-LESS" - Ok that seems very weird to me. 'Sell-eas'. Eas as in 'Easter'. Locke- "lock" - I actually pronouce it 'Low-Key' for some reason. Tritoch- "TRY-tock" - For me its more 'tosh' at the end. Thamasa- "Tuh-MAH-suh" - I say it as written, 'tham' rather than 'tuh'. -------------------- Whether you take the doughnut hole as a blank space or as an entity unto itself is a purely metaphysical question and does not affect the taste of the doughnut one bit. http://slightly-bitter.blog.co.uk |

Quote (Luna) Chocobo - cho-ko-bo!!! How could it possibly say anthing else? I think part of the deal with pronunciation is with which syllable(s) are accented. I don't think anyone would dispute that pronunciation with you, but I have heard people call them choCObos, even though I myself say CHOcobos. I've noticed that a good deal of people here don't actually indicate their syllable emphases in their pronunciations, so it's not just your problem. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing.
