Heard in chat I'm not the only one addicted to this game like I have? It's been a while since I've played a game where I've lost track of time while playing. And it's truly impressive what people are doing with this thing!

I learned from Minecraft by watching a lot of lets plays and other commentated videos. This isn't the first such video I've seen but I think it's the one that might most interest the community.
The game is lots of fun even though I haven't started any of my own projects. Part of that is that I die and lose my stuff to creepers or skeletons a lot and figure I might as well start clean with a new world. Also I'm too distracted by the resource gathering in my little hobbit hole. Minecraft reminds me very much of hobbits, as they love simple tools but dislike complex machines, hate the unsensible dangers of adventuring, live in neat little holes, you can adventure anyway and fight giant spiders kinda like Bilbo did, a lot of stuff kinda wants to kill and eat you and unexpected baddies come from the darkness kinda like those goblins in the mountains or Gollum in his cave. Somebody needs to do Tolkien minecraft. Like just reshape a huge portion of the land just to match the map of the Middle Earth or something. Tolkien sure was descriptive enough so that one could do a near perfect recreation if so wanted. It also reminds me of Lego sets, even more so than the official Lego games, since there's obviously a lot of potential for building with multicolored blocks like bigfootmike showed and your guy looks kinda like a legoman himself. I bet buying lego sets and building prototype model sets would be a great way to come up with ideas. Very, very cool premise. Also being a fan of cute things, when I look at the Minecraft Wiki, I highly regret not playing the game when the Rana were still in it since the screenshots adorable and remind me of my favorite game franchise, the Mario series. Ah well, I guess there's always Mikuru. Bonus points for trying a pixel art aesthetic, albeit I do quite very much prefer 2D art still. Not that this game would work well in 2D with the building aspects 'n all. Speaking of which I wonder where my red/blue anaglyph glasses are.... Quote (R8.50 Mango @ 31st October 2010 10:45) What exactly is Minecraft? As far as I know, a sandbox/construction game that apparently everyone plays except you and me, so I advise you play it so I stay special. In all seriousness, been pondering trying Minecraft out. I'm terrible at sandbox building games mind, as attested by the fact I can successfully blow myself up in Garry's Mod, but not much else. But blowing everything up is all part of the plan I therefore must ask, does this game allow you to build a turtle fence? Del S is pretty spot on but allow me to go into further detail:
Minecraft is exactly what it says on the tin. The main point of the game is just to mine resources and craft it into cool stuff by rearranging it in your inventory workspace. You can make bows 'n arrows, pickaxes, swords, stairs anything you want and/or need. It plays like a highly spartan free roaming RPG and there are a few harmless animals and dangerous monsters to hunt, just to up the ante and keep things interesting. The worlds are procedurally generated so they can pretty much go on forever and you can explore fight kill. It has server/client functions too so there's a bit of MMO potential going on there too. It's currently in 'alpha' testing stages, whatever that means in the context of a widespread near open test, so there may be more to come. It's purely a downloadable game and it's not free but it's half off for alpha and if there are any updates, you'll get them for free. Only if there are any though as the author says on their own site they're not too terribly committed to the project. Quote ("Del S") I therefore must ask, does this game allow you to build a turtle fence? And blow it up? <Tonepoet looks up Turtle Fence> Kinda: You can build ineffective protective enclosures, including wooden fences, to keep the NPCs trapped since monsters spawn wherever there's darkness and animals spawn wherever there is grass. Creeper enemies blow up so you could lure them over or if that's too difficult/dangerous to ask, they sometimes drop gunpowder when you kill them which can be used to create TNT. Unfortunately there are no turtles planned for the game as of yet so it'd have to be called a spider fence, a cattle fence or something of the sort. There also no cars to run them over with. However there are bonus points to make up for a matching sign that can say whatever you want. "BLOWING UP ZONEZ. PLZ KEEP OUT 4 SAFTEE. ![]() This post has been edited by Tonepoet on 31st October 2010 16:58 -------------------- |

Finally purchased the full version and have come to a few conclusions:
1 - This game is highly addictive 2- This game is what I wish so many RPGs would implement 3- This game is effin' rad. If anyone's jamming on a fun server, let us know! I'd happily join in and build with ya'! My Minecraft username is the same as here: Perigryn. At the moment I look like Link, though I plan to make my own skin as soon as I stop playing so much... eh heh... In other news... So I'm bringing this topic back.
I recently started playing Minecraft on my cousin's server, and, wow, it's addicting. I didn't think I'd ever have so much fun digging. I am a bit spoiled because my cousin set up a "supplies" room wherein I can hit a button and get free diamond pickaxes/shovels, but I've done my share of work (I've been playing about a week and I've already mined down two mountains and leveled out a huge area, not to mention my underground tunnel network). Only thing is, I have lots of material (mostly cobblestone) and I don't really have an eventual plan for it. What should I make? Castles have been done, but I have essentially unlimited room, and I want to do something awesome. -------------------- Squenix games completed: FFIII FFIV FFVI FFVII FFIX FFX FF Tactics: Advance 2 Chrono Trigger Dragon Quest 8 Dragon Quest 11 Super Mario RPG |

Here's something I did recently; I ended up very disappointed in it because the two colors of green wool available don't work very well together to create a not-flat Cactuar.

Nintendisland, as I've mentioned to Neal before, is awesome.
Narratorway, that tower thingy is pretty sweet! At the moment, I am building Echo Base in an area I've named Hoth (Star Wars reference, for any sad soul who didn't recognize it right away). Since snow doesn't regenerate, gathering it has been a bit of a hinderance, but nothing too bad. As it's almost entirely underground and mostly hallways and rooms, it isn't a terribly photogenic thing. And not half as artsy as the other things in this thread. My other project is a long railroad that more or less functions ![]() -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up! The Isle of Nintendo things is pretty awesome, I must say.
Also, that Chronocraft post was well done too. Lots of work went into those textures, that's for sure. The server I play on has been in flux a lot lately, so the city I was working on has since vanished, alas. My first major project was actually and underground city and it was going pretty darn well, I must say. Anyways, speaking of servers, does anyone have a public server they play on at all? Or any private servers that an enterprising CONer can join in on? -------------------- Games on the Go Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy: Four Warriors of Light Baldur's Gate Too much to play, so little time! I know I'm characteristically late to the table here, but I thought I'd post anyway even if this particular ship has sailed. I bought the game yesterday when I was drunk. Didn't have any intention to play it because I didn't think I was the kind of person to enjoy it. Well I was totally wrong.
I've not got anything to really show so far. I'm currently trying to make a water and lava statue/fountain kind of set up. The physics are very agreeable for this kind of thing. Also I thought I'd post what my world looked like when I put in my phone number into the seed generator. It's really weird. It's like a desert with dirt mountains and random water placements throughout. And some of the placings are bizarre as well. Has anyone else done this? ![]() ![]() -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Me on the Starcraft. |

Quote (sweetdude @ 2nd August 2011 15:50) Has anyone else done this? I did something similar, in that I've experimented with different Seeds when generating worlds. I found that using "redtstoneeverywhere" tends to produce lots of subterranean cave structures, which can make for a lot of !!Fun!! when you find them by accidentally breaching their ceiling when digging out the block beneath your feet. (Cookies to those who get the reference) As an aside, I am aware I'm replying over a month later. ![]() This post has been edited by Suunok on 8th September 2011 20:40 |
