This question may be extremely stupid, but I've wondered for years now how * Locke was produced.
I always thought that it was produced " Lock- ee " But then people in real life have the surname Locke, and the E is silent. And the Locke on Lost, despite having a E at the end of Locke, he also had a silent E. So is it Lock Cole, or is it Lock- ee Cole ?? It could be Lock because that was his name in the Japanese version, but Lock-ee Cole sounds a little better than Lock Cole xD This post has been edited by ZidaneTribal on 10th July 2011 10:08 -------------------- Currently playing Chrono Trigger !! It's pronounced the same as what'll happen to the duplicate thread you accidentally made
...Yep, that's right, deleted. Wait, no. I'd say it's a silent E. The lack of an accent above the e for example. In addition the amount of Lockey Charms jokes that can be made if your preferred pronunciation is followed are a justification to stick with the sounds of silence... -------------------- "Only the dead have seen the end of their quotes being misattributed to Plato." -George Santayana "The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here..." -Abraham Lincoln, prior to the discovery of Irony. |

Oh, it's the "how to pronounce FFVI character names" topic again.
It's "lock" for me. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. You can find me on the Fediverse! I use Mastodon, where I am @[email protected] ( https://sakurajima.moe/@glennmagusharvey ) |

I say it with a silent E, consistent with the likes of John Locke.

Well, as I have played the game the first time I was a teenager at the PSX and I am from Germany, I pronounced it German:
Loc(k)-ke "ck" is pronounced as double k in the German language. Means, it usually sperates syllables, while the on "k" is at the end of the first syllable, and the 2nd "k" at the beginning of the second. Though, it sounds a bit retarded then. Another reason why it pronounced it that way was the fact it is written the same as the German word for curl. I think if I talk about FF VI, I would still call him that way. Though, I almost always dislike the name, since it sounds so...eh, hard to describe I guess. And it sounds a bit lame with the German pronouncion. If you want to hear how it sounds, you can do so here: http://www.dict.cc/?s=Locke&sourceid=Mozilla-search This post has been edited by Bas on 8th July 2011 23:07 |

I've never heard of the English name Locke being pronounced "Lockee". John Locke, Locke from Lost. But then again, this is a fantasy work. You don't have to go by real world rules. Pronounce it Lukay if you wish... there are no boundaries!

It's six years old and slowly dieing. I guess it's a silent E. -------------------- Currently playing Chrono Trigger !! Currently looking forward to Don't Know. |

I always call(ed) him Locke with a silent e, because seeing he's technically of the Thief/Treasure Hunter Job, it's like a lock on a door.
Can someone explain "Open Cole"? |

His last name is Cole. If you read the posts above, it mentions "what you do when you turn a key" and someone responded with "Open". So they gave him the last name with it : Open Cole.
And as for this thread, I pronounce it Lock. I worked for a company called "Locke Supply" when the game was released. It was pronounced Lock so it was a simple thought for me to call him the same thing. This post has been edited by Aeris-Logan on 31st July 2011 21:24 |
