Mage Master a coward?

I am playing thru FFVI again on my snes and have run into a snag. this is the first time that I've done the tower with mog and the moogle charm, cause i hate this place. i get all the way to the top, take the gem box, and exit... only to be surrounded by the kult members. no big deal right? well my problem lies in the fact that I've sat for 20 minutes and the mage master never comes?! anyone else ever run into this and/or how do i get this chump to show up for his beating?

Celebrated the CoN 20th Anniversary at the forums. Member of more than ten years. Member of more than five years. 
Its been years since I've played so forgive me if the information's inaccurate but I think they leave you several spaces down to the south to walk and you may've had to try to take a step or two further out to actually trigger the event of his arrival. I think the purpose is to pace things so there's a sort of tense build-up.

Just to reiterate though, I'm not quuuuite sure but hey, it couldn't hurt much to try since you're not going through the trouble of fighting all of those tedious random battles. Could it? Hopefully this advice helps; sorry if it didn't.

P.S. He's either very, very brave or a big chicken pendent on how you view his behavior and battle tactics. I'm somewhat more inclined to believe the former than the latter myself but I suppose that's another story. . .

i dont know if you would call 5 spaces several. cause i think thats all you get once you come out the door... and then the loonies show up, blocking the path. then i wait... for nothing to happen.. sad.gif maybe i'll just finish up some other loose ends and come back another day. lol thanks for the reply tho smile.gif

I've never heard of this actually. I wonder if the game just glitched or something. Try fighting him after saving and reseting.

Could just be a problem with your save file as well. I had a similar problem with Kefka in the Battle for The Esper. I would kill him but then I'd be back to where the Soldier on the mount runs back and forth and then I'd have to re-fight him and then Kefka once more.

Things went back to normal after that.

finished up all the rest of the loose ends and went back, this time he came and fought me, only to be destroyed in a matter of minutes. .. thanks for the replies everyone!!

Have you tried to go back into the top room, AND go down? I thought you had to try and go back in the room you get the gem box in.

This is a bug that is known to occur when you do not change your party after collecting Umaro. The game will block the exit with Cult of Kefka members, but the MagiMaster does not show. There's no way out of there except for a reset...

blink.gif wow... never happened to me. the game froze on the black screen trancition instead! then again I was playing the PS1 version and the disc is old but still works. I reset and it worked. beaten!
