I think this guy makes some of the best TV. If there are any other Louis Theroux fans here please share your thoughts!
For those who haven't seen him, Theroux makes documentaries with the BBC in a sort of freelance Gonzo style. He says he mostly goes for bizarre subcultures or groups and tries to integrate and uncover them. In the Max Clifford episode (my favourite), Clifford says that he "gives people enough rope to hang themselves", that's about the best description. Not to mention a lot of the time they are very very funny. One of the better known episodes are the 'Most Hated Family in America' and its follow-up, both of which are pretty frightening in some places, and funny in others. Anyway if you've got some spare time and you've not seen any of them then I'd recommend watching this one first: All on YouTube. My friend says I have a man-crush on him, and yes maybe I do, but it's really hard not to. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Ever since Louis Theroux' Weird Weekends I've been a fan of his. His programmes are fascinating viewing, and yeah 'Most Hated Family in America' was some of his best work.
The thing is he's very clever at getting people to open up to him; half the time people end up saying things you'd never think would be said to anyone else. People see this seemingly harmless, somewhat slim and skinny chap and they seem almost to forget there's a camera rolling! Very clever and interesting TV. If anyone in the US or UK hasn't seen him in action yet go check it out. This post has been edited by fffanbrit on 15th June 2011 17:08 -------------------- "Smoking's bad, mm'kay?" -Mr Mackey- |

After reading this post, I watched the documentary where he spends time with the white supremacists and I have to say, I really enjoyed watching it. Normally, I can't stand these sorts of documentaries but there's something genuine in his curiosity and, I have to say, he's brave as hell. Will definitely check out more of his work when time permits.

I watched most of the one with the Westboro church and it was really quite good - the last part of it seems to have disappeared from YouTube, though, so I haven't been able to finish it.
I quite like documentaries that take a look at generally unlikeable people. If he does a lot more of those, then I'll have to watch more. ![]() -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Off the top of my head I thought of these three. Each have pretty despicable people in the spotlight.
...and the Nazis: Basically a look at the head of the so-called Nazis in the US. He's got a fearsome reputation but all is not as it seems. Most Hated Family in Crisis: If you liked the original episode then this is a must see. I think it's about a year on from the first one and it's great to see how things have changed. Max Clifford: This is my favourite as I mentioned before. It's quite scary to watch how candid the press can be about lies and fabrication. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind.
