Any other Whovians on CoN?
...Anyone? Anyway, I was discussing this with some of my friends, and I find that people's opinions tend to be all over the map (which is a testament to the quality of the show, IMO). For me, it's Donna, with Amy as a close second, for reasons I shall get to. (Also, yeah, a spoiler or two) My least favorite, by far, is Rose. My friend Tom hates her because, despite The Doctor's explicit orders not to do so, she ALWAYS wanders off and ends up getting herself into trouble, and I can't say that I don't share this opinion. I dislike her because the show seems to treat her as TEH GREATEST PERSON EVAR, despite having seemingly no justifiable reason for doing so:
...and a handful of other reasons I can't think of at the moment. But yeah, Rose. I certainly like Martha a hell of a lot more than I do Rose. She's intelligent, a capable leader, and, unlike Rose, is actually able to handle not travelling with The Doctor anymore (Donna doesn't count, due to the memory erasure). The biggest problem I have with her as companion is that throughout her entire run on the show, there's the obnoxious underlying love triangle, where she's in love with the Tenth Doctor, while the Doctor is basically "omg i miss rose so muchhhh". But Donna is my favorite. Even though she's a bitch in The Runaway Bride, she gets nicer. She's strong-willed, doesn't take BS, and doesn't fall in love with the Doctor (something I also really like about Amy...aside from the once incident after the whole Weeping Angels deal, of course). -------------------- |

I agree about Rose. It's not that I dislike her per se, but when the show treats her as the Best Companion Evah, it's really annoying, because she's obviously not.
I like Amy Pond, personally. |

i love doctor who, and its a very hard decision for me between amy and rose. i eventually chose amy, but i love the story and the emotion behind roses character. i thought her character was absolutely brilliant (and its not like the other companions listened to the doctors orders either), but i like amys backstory more

I'm a Whovian... except I'm purely old skool. Tried watching the new series but wasn't impressed. I dunno if it was a case of trying to compare it too much to the old one, but I didn't like it.

I'm all in favour of modern DW, although I got fed up with the Tenth Doctor being wasted on really crappy stories and writing (with some thoroughly splendid exceptions, mind). There was a new team in charge in 2010, so it might be worth giving it another shot if you didn't like earlier modern episodes - conversely if you disliked an Eleventh Doctor episode, try one from the Ninth or Tenth before you write it off.
I voted on this ages ago and I think I voted for Pond. Well, I assume I did since there aren't many votes elsewhere! She could do with calming down a bit sometimes but she has a great backstory and legs. Yes, I went there. Donna Noble was probably my second favourite, which was a complete surprise. I'm not a fan of Catherine Tate's comedy show or of her general style of brash shoutiness, but once her character developed she actually turned out to be brilliant. And it was nice not to have any blasted sexual tension getting in the way for once, with the consequence that season 4 is far and away the best Tenth Doctor season. Rose was a good companion to Nine but she and Ten were just utterly punchable together. And don't get me started on that whole nonsense of giving her a copy of the Tenth Doctor who will age and grow old with her. Come on, it's supposed to be Doctor Who, not The Love Tardis. Martha was a theoretically promising character - as a doctor we might've seen her contribute something intelligent to the proceedings. But I don't think the writers knew what to do with her other than make a Rose clone who was in luuuuurve with the Doctor AGAIN. She was much better as an occasional character than during her time as a proper companion because she served some purpose in those stories other than following the Doc around with puppy dog eyes. I'm glad to see so much love for Pond in the poll - I'm hoping that reflects that people are happy with the latest series, which I think has been a massive improvement, in spite of a couple of dud episodes (still faltering at a lower rate than any other season than 4, though). There always seem to be a lot of detractors online, but I'm hoping that's mostly the usual unrepresentative nerd rage. |

I don't know this Amy Pond. Is she with the 11th doctor? I haven't seen any of those episodes yet.
I prefer Martha Jones, though. I always thought she was pretty cool. Obviously she liked the Doctor a lot but I think she still did her own thing. Mostly I like her because she is not Rose, who is repulsive. Donna is pretty funny but I haven't seen many of her episodes. -------------------- |

Anyone else see the premiere of the new season? Steven Moffat is a mad genius, IMO.
Also, since today is Easter, if feel it's appropriate to say that I believe Jesus Christ was a Time Lord - he didn't rise from the dead, he just regenerated. -------------------- |

I can clearly see that I'm in the minority, but I actually prefer Rose, with Pond second.
I sadly have very strong dislike for Catherine Tate, which meant Donna was stuffed from the get-go for me. Add to that the fact that she is as gobby as a Qu clan member, and my disinterest is sealed. Martha was alright, but never really bothered me much. Rose had her many flaws, but I liked the relationship between the Doctor and she; and the out and out love story it became. In short, I guess I'm a soppy romantic. And yeah, I did see the premiere - very very good! I made my guess as to who was beneath the spacesuit visor at the beginning Possible spoilers: highlight to view and am looking forward to being inevitably proven wrong! (i.e. who it is that kills the Doctor) -------------------- We apologise for the inconvenience |
