What's the worst combination of handicaps or status ailments that have really given you a hard time at Battle Square?

Me? Well I got Broken Accessory on the 3rd or 4th handicap, making my Ribbon useless and also causing me to be put into Berserk status by one of the enemies. I also had Counter-Attack materia equipped, so after being Beserked I countered, killed, and continued to the next set of enemies and handicap.

Now remember, my Ribbon is useless, and what comes next was a major slap in the face.. the Minimum handicap! So there I am, a small, pissed off Cloud carrying Ultima Weapon and hitting for 1 damage every single time!

To make things even more of a pain, my opponent (after me being minimized) was a Serpent who only attacked with (I think it's called) Viper Breath which was ice damage.. which I was immune to thanks to my Escort Guard!

So just imagine, a battle where you can't be damaged at all, are not in control of your actions, and do 1 damage each swing. It was a depressing sight

Anyone else with a memory of a rough time in Battle Square?

Wow that sounds rubbish. I've forgotten to equip my Ribbon from time to time which was dumb but generally the biggest problem has been - Cloud dying. Not being high enough in level before tackling W-Summon and the like.

I once had 7 heals in a row...got 6 BP I think.

I was up against the Proud Clod in the Special Battle. All my materia was broken. I didn't really care about most of it, just... Mime. I had used Omnislash in the first battle and was going to mime it all the way through. My materia was broken at the end of the Seventh battle. Up until then I was doing fine... So, so foolish of me

I had all materia broken, accessory broken, was turned into a frog and had my items disabled

I was playing as Aeris/Aerith, and I got the handicap that cuts your hp in half 2 or 3 times in a row, the one that seals your materia, and the one that seals the item command. I made it to the last round, and my opponent was a dragon. I used her Great Gospel Limit break to make her invincible, and started attacking. Unfortunately, the invincibility wore off before the dragon was dead, and it ended up killing her in one hit.

The worst thing that happened to me is when I'm probably about to gain about 11000 BP and then I fight a Ghost Ship and it tosses me away on its first move. It pisses me off!

Well, I can't say much about worst combos in the Battle Square, seeing as I've only fought in it twice (the mandatory battle for the keystone on two separate playthroughs).

The first time (a few years back), I don't remember what my combinations were, but I lost the final battle.

The second time (today), I managed a pair of Command materia broken, a pair of Support materia broken, and finally three Independent materia broken (or was it two Indies followed by three Support?). I won all the battles.
And after Dio gave me the keystone, I checked in with the lady at the prize counter, who told me I had no Battle Points.
Okay, so I couldn't have bought much with my winnings from that set of battles (1 Phoenix Down, or maybe a Remedy), but come on! Why couldn't I use them?

I once had my armor weapon accessories yellow(skills) and green(healing magic) broken.

I couldn't win no matter what,i also ended up small or something like that.

I would always seem to have the worst luck at the Battle Square.
Played so much I can hardly recall any ONE occurrence.

Well other than having been removed from the battle by the ghost ship anyway.

I don't know about you guys but, getting slow status effect on the first turn by those worm monsters are so damn annoying

And i got all materia broken, hp and mp half, toad(stopped by ribbon),and some others but i survive cuz i had ULTIMATE weapon for cloud and he could do about 5000 damage and i used some items as well

Wow, I'm gonna have to think hard to remember.

I was Cloud. I think it was my weapon was broken, all materia was broken, a few "down 10 and/or 5 levels", and no MP. I THINK my HP was halved as well, but I forget exactly. All I know is I was affected with all this and still had two more battles left. I remember thinking "I'm so screwed. No way I'm gonna win." I somehow won them with items and what little damage I could do with the Fight command.

Once I got a broken weapon really early, closely followed by beserk..... wasnt fun.

Yeah and ive completed it before and got hardly any bp, think thats a good thing though coz it makes you want to get harder handicaps.

i got half hp 4 times then i lost my accessory then i got half mp 2 times and then i lost to some gigantic monster

The Ghost Ship is one of the more annoying enemies in the Battle Arena, but an Elixir or X-Potion used on it kills it instantly since it's an Undead/Ghost character that's weak against Holy.

umm so far this is what I've got:
I got good hard ones that broke my materia and accessory etc. up until the fifth slot and this was a good thing because it meant more points. But my hp was halfed at no. 3 and then at 4 and then at no. 6 slot, and then I died. It really annoyed me. I'm trying to get the w-summon materia and finding it a bit difficult :/

Unfortunately thats the way its set up, the harder your penalties, the more points you get. I always hope not to get lucky 7 or cure because it takes away from the points I get at the end. One of my worse rounds was when I got hit by the half hp twice and the a half hp/mp. I only had about 1600hp into the 5th round, still doing fine but was using big gaurd and made sure I was healed before going on to round 6. Got a time x30 damage, dropped me below a hundred hitpoints and got wasted before having a chance to react. Good tip for those that hate status, try wearing a ribbon and equiping Hades with an Added Effect materia on your armor slot. Even if one gets taken out (accesory break or materia break) you can still hope on the other to get you through. Added Effect and Contain is another useful one since it protects you from Stop, Confusion, and Petrify.

What level were you going into it? I don't mean to belittle you by any means, but it seems like a lot of people on here say it takes hours and they get so frustrated. I walked in and had enough points in less than an hour, only losing a fight once because Ghost Ship used that stupid move that knocks you out of battle. Yes I had a ribbon on, Cloud's ultimate weapon, Mystile Armor, and Hades/Added Effect as a back up for status defense, but even when I got the worst penalties, I still beat it fairly easy.

In perspective, Omnislash is a novelty, you don't really need it except maybe against the Weapons and Sephiroth/Jenova. Same goes with the W-Summon, since its only worth it once you have Knights of the Round, and anything you fight up until the end of Disc 3 dies in one hit of KotR, you don't need W-summon until the end of the game. I waited until Disc 3 to go to Battle Square.

Going in with Omnislash to win the other prizes, along with a lvl 80 Cloud and the 4x-cut may sound fool proof, but its not. I've still died like that.

No you' re not belittling me at all lol. For some reason I never actually thought about what level I was and that it might have made it easier if I leveled up a bit. Cloud was level 65, with the ragnarok, mystile, ribbon lots of useful materia. I still haven't fought the weapons so no ultimate weapon for Cloud - yet. I was so intent on getting the W-Summon then and I'm not sure why, I just was. I mean yeah it could have waited. I haven't even used it once. The ghost ship was very annoying, it knocked me out twice. I suppose that didn't help and some of it was me not thinking straight, clicking the command before thinking and then losing because I didn't cure myself or whatever it was. I feel accomplished though so maybe it was worth it! I find Omnislash really useful - I've used it alot and I was on disc three when I went to battle square.
