In the FF SNES games, all the enemies when battling are in Sprite form, as in one intricate design made by those at SquareSoft. I almost like these forms of the enemy more than PS versions where the enemy is 3-D and animated, because it is one awesome capturing of the enemy at a vivacious moment in art form, which I've always been impressed with when it comes to Square (who isn't impressed?)..
.. My favorite layouts go from Golbez' Enemy Layout, Siegfried in FF6, Vargas in FF6, and Umaro's Enemy Layout when you fight him in Narshe. Of course, my vote falls on Siegfried who I believe is Locke's evil counterpart in some way, shape or form. But out of the three SNES games created by Square who do you think has the coolest Sprite/Layout Design? |

For regular enemy, the Blue/Red/Mechanical Dragon Palette swap from IV.

The 3 statues and Atma Weapon were damn good.
Honourable mention goes to the four fiends as well. |

Ultima Weapon (FFVI), on the grounds that it's the only enemy sprite in the game that animates AND looks badass as it is.
Edit Apprently, not many people know that Atma's actual name is Ultima in Final Fantasy VI. Just clarifying that. -Rubes This post has been edited by Rubicant on 7th November 2003 19:39 |

Ugliest--Zeromus Hidon (FFVI, not SMRPG) tie for first. (Lavos comes in second and Yakra and Yakra XIII get honorable mentions.)
Best drawn--FFVI Atma Weapon, the three statues of FFVI, as well as Kefka's monster obelisk and his final form. Honorable mention--Golbez, Azala, final Queen Zeal, Guardian, Doom Gaze. Cutest--Pug/Tonberry. Edit: Am I the only one around here who things pugs look cute? Lavos was great, all forms of his actually. Poltergeist from FF6, definitely. And Cactuar! Well, Cactrot, you know what I mean.

I liked Caignozzio from FFIV. When the water was raised up around him when he was about to do his tidal wave attack, I think that was a breakthrough for FF. That was the first time I actually saw an enemy spirit actually did something. Plus he was a cool looking enemy

I think Tonberrys (Tonberries?) are cute! I even think it's cute when they go stabby stabby and you die.
![]() Ultima Weapon is gorgeous, and I like Vargas a lot too, as well as Kefka in all of his non-SD forms. Queen Zeal is neat-looking, in her just-her-hands-and-face form. Let's see, what else...there are some pretty wacky critters in FFV, like the people wearing big hats who ride on crescent moons (I can't remember the names of any of their palette swaps ![]() ![]() |

3d >> sprite
but i always liked the flat art from square's saga series, esp saga frontier 1. i can't think of a particular enemy (i can think of an area -- Hell in bleu's quest), but i thought those games always had excellent hand-drawn artwork (that is obviously better than sprites). as far as sprites, i thought CT was very cool -- i loved magus' sprite of course, and masamune/penultimate spekkio is another favorite from that game. |

I am going to have to say Lavos of Chrono Trigger. It was really great and you gotta love the moves lavos can do.

i would actually say queen zeal from chrono trigger, it had that all powerful corrupted tyrant look going that is kind of cool
other than that i really liked kefka's final form (FFVI), it had a very god-like look and finally it would have to be final gigamesh look it was a totally bad-@$$ weaponed out look -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

I liked the cactrots from FFVI. They looked so wimpy, and like they were trying to run away, and it deceived me! They're pretty cute, too.

Golbeze's enemy sprite from FF4 was too damn cool, and I took a dump in my pants in my first battle with Atma/Ultima Weapon...

Even though it's the SNES FF I've played the least, by far, I've always been partial to the work done on Final Fantasy V's enemy sprites - I'd even go so far as to say that on aggregate, they're actually better than those in Final Fantasy VI; there seems to be more variety and even detail in them, to me.

I've always felt that Twin Tania looked awkwardly pregnant. Or like it had a really engorged taint or something. Very bizarre sprite.

Yeah, FF V had some ql sprites. Didn't like those of FF IV so much, though.
I really like the X-Death's Soul's sprite. ![]() |
