DNF is still no Chinese Democracy. Dunno what the internet's silly obsession with this game is....
I actually spoke with John St. John at MAGFest last weekend. He said that the voice work is 100% complete, so this release date is unsurprising. -------------------- |

I look forward to some Duke. I liked the old cover better than the on they revealed, but I'm sure it'll be 'rockin cool' either way.

I'll bet anyone cash money that a LOT of people will be disappointed by the game once it comes out.

Quote (laszlow @ 21st January 2011 22:15) DNF is still no Chinese Democracy. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy. As for the obsession, well, it's filled with bum, fart, poo, wee gags. It's rude, crude, lewd, and laden with nipples and swear words. It engages in schoolboy titterings involving bodily functions and squishy things. It has excessive amounts of violence and explosions. That ought to cover it. And yes, I was aware of the sarcastic tone but I feel it's important that it is made clear the reasons this game is rated M for MANLY, IE, because it is so childish. Could actually be enjoyable. Be nice to have an FPS not filled with grenades and super-serious serial scenarios. Be nice to have a game that isn't just a repackage of last year's edition with two new fighters or six new guns. Depending on how things turn out, it could a repackage of the edition from TWELVE years ago, with six new guns, and no new fighters as Dukey here is the main attraction. And the reasons you listed for why people like it are EXACTLY why I find it gross and repulsive. I'd like a game that not only relies on something other audacity to sell itself, but also has a main character who I am AT LEAST indifferent to. If I care about him/her, it's great, if I'm indifferent - meh, it's a game, they have gameplay. But if I DON'T like him, and in fact find immature, repulsive and overly-horny? Well then, the devs aren't getting my dough. I'd like it if they would realize that I like five explosions a second with lots of boobs and fart jokes just 'cause I'm a teenage dude. Beyond that, no parent who bothered to do five minutes of research on this game would buy this for their fifteen-year-old. Parents may not always know best, but they certainly aren't dumb: It's "M," it's got all the aforementioned gross stuff, and probably a lot more. Of course, a lot of parents AREN'T going to five minutes of research on this game, therefore, it will sell like hotcakes. -------------------- "When we think there's no hope left, we keep looking until we find some!" - Claire Farron |

This, and nothing else, is the reason why DNF garners attention - it's been "in development" for so ridiculously long that the idea of it actually getting released seems like a sign of the apocalypse. It may not be a long time in the history of humanity, but it's an absurd development length for a single video game. And for anyone who missed a bit of the history, it's only getting released because the original developer went up in smoke and a competent developer (Gearbox) bought out the rights to it. For the game itself, I can't say I'm massively excited - I haven't known anything with a protracted development end up being anything other than a disappointment before. But who knows? You can dislike the character all you want, but Duke Nukem 3D was a very decent FPS back in the day - PC fans used to war over whether it or Quake was the better game, and because of atmosphere alone I had to side with Nukem, because Quake was such a brown, ambient dull-a-thon. |

This game has been in development for as long as I've been playing them. Seeing this game released feels like the end of an era in a way that I -- or anyone younger than me -- can't really understand.
I played the demo at PAX and am really excited to play this game, but at the same time I have no reservations about its quality. I think playing this will be a similar experience to watching the Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus after learning about Heath Ledger's death halfway through production -- just like, being constantly curious on how the game had to be restructured and tooled after it was picked up again. What was Gearbox responsible for, and what was always part of 3D Realms' original vision? How much scrambling did Gearbox have to do to get this game in a shippable state, and was all of their work additive or did they do a lot of content cutting? I know a lot of people are going to hate this game for the simple reason of it's dev cycle length but that's honestly the part I'm most excited to think about. Parents may not always know best, but they certainly aren't dumb: It's "M," it's got all the aforementioned gross stuff, and probably a lot more. But here's the thing. It won't sell like hotcakes because of that stuff, certainly not all because of that stuff. The thing you don't realize, and that Tiddles alludes to, is that there was in fact a prior game in the series (and some side scrolling platformers before that); and, as "early" FPS games for PC went, it was pretty solid. Not only that, it was originally from an era in which PC gamers were already kind of pushing the envelope for good taste in games, and Duke Nukem was, by design, intentionally crass and irreverent. Well, there's a second thing you don't realize. You were barely alive when the first game came out. The fact that there's finally a new game in the series doesn't necessarily mean that it's targeted for you (or anyone your age) and it's missed its mark - if anything, it's targeted to the people who played the first one when it was new and wanted the second one when it was SUPPOSED to come out. Those people are, almost certainly, well beyond the necessary age to buy a M-rated game, and I'm pretty sure that Gearbox doesn't give a single care about whether they don't sell a single copy to a parent buying for their child. They'd make the money anyway. Now, don't get me wrong and think I'm being simply ageist. I was just a bit older than you when DN3D came out, and I wasn't really into the crass humor thing back then either, so I do see where you're coming from. But that game was solid, and I did play it through, and I did take it for what it was - silly in its immaturity but still a bit clever for it's spoofing of overpumped action heroes. To take anything with the Duke Nukem name too seriously is to miss its point, which is something that you'd be forgiven for not recognizing, simply because the character didn't exist as anything but a joke for most of the time you've been a gamer. Now, as for the trailer itself, I'm not that impressed. Even in 720P, it just didn't look clean to me. The graphics seemed a bit rough and not current-gen, and the gameplay didn't look all that innovative aside from the more jokey stuff that would probably get old fast for me. I'm sure I'll try it, mainly out of nostalgia, but I will agree with your overall point that it just doesn't really look like it's that great of a game. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? Simply put, if it's anything like the original, it'll be miles above current generation FPS. Hell a development cycle this long means the level designs might have actual level design.

I know little about Duke Nukem and less about the current state of modern shooters, other than they're hella popular. I will say, though, that Gearbox knows their #&%$, if Borderlands' acclaim, fanbase, and recommendations from people whom I trust is any indication. You could pick several worse development teams to pick up the project. -------------------- |

It highly doubtful that Gearbox did any major level design alterations for the game. There are a couple articles I've read quoting development folks during the end of the 3D realms development regarding how the game was almost completely finished by the time the studio folded. Anything gameplay or design oriented for this game is almost guaranteed to be entirely the result of the 3d realms team.
