In October or maybe November of 2000,i started playing this online game called everquest.
Back then i was 20 years old and new to mmorpgs. Back then i didn't know how to deal with Internet trolls and otherwise bullies. I quit everquest 3 years ago because of the verbal harassment and never came back. I could probably sue those guys for verbal harassment and ruining the game for me. This is no joke folks nor am i making it overly melodramatic. When 1 person shouts:hey that guy is a troll and a kser and a ninjalooter, that kind of thing can ruin ones credibility and they can no longer raid. In games like everquest, you need to be able to group with the community and be part of it,but its hard when people keep being jerks. Ok maybe I'm making it a little dramatic, but these guys seriously ruined the game for me. I mean:all they do is spend their time being hypocrites when i already have real life problems and all i want to do is sit down and relax. Back then, everquest for me was a relax from work. Another problem with these games:They take accidents and mistakes too personally. Ok i made a few errors in pulling or i try to help them by pulling mobs and trying to bring them XP because I'm a nice guy. Does that make me stupid? yes because i am helping them and getting nothing in return because they are dissing me. A community has to have respect for others, otherwise you got an isolated people and the actual nice guys won't want to participate because they are acting like jerks. I'm really sorry that i went on so long, but its a long post with a lot of info of what i think contributes to why online games don't work. Overall,i think that stupid people contribute to online games being bad, that isn't the only thing though, bad game play and other things also contribute to the stagnation of mmorpgs. Everquest used to be a good game before all the snobs and elitist jerks came along and ruined the game. The easiest thing to do is ignore them. I know it's difficult on MMOs, but hey, there are other great great single player games that aren't MMOs. If it's not a big deal, you can continue playing them. If it does bother you, stop playing. Eventually, the publishers/designers will get the message and combat the problem.

I quit everquest 3 years ago and i quit wow about 1 year ago. I actually became bitter so i lost my desire to play everquest. The problem with trolls in mmorpgs as said above:The only thing you can do is quit the game because: Posting lies damages your reputation and you can no longer group or raid. So of course its different from trolls on youtube. In youtube, you ignore them and say:what an idiot and thats that. In a mmorpg:if i were to say:blitzsage is a kser and a ninjalooter and trainer as an example:the other guy says:really? and i convince my best friend and someone else to say yeah and word spreads out and nobody wants to group with you. Its harmful and wrong. You know,i hope there is a hell and all these guys go there and suffer for eternity for their wrong doing. I hope they get what's coming to them for causing pain to others in life in some way and teaches them a lesson because,in life it seems like the bad guys always win and get what they want and the good honest people always suffer. If i act though,i am no better than them. I'm not playing mmorpgs anymore, they just aren't fun. Let the idiots go play mmorpgs and troll because those days are over for me. Oh, I wouldn't read Youtube comments. They are the lowest level of human scum. That's the thing about the internet. You just have to be careful where you go. It's full of everything, including all of our b.s.

But people should also be careful what they accuse others of: If i were to say:blitzsage is a drug dealer and a murderous pedophile scum and it were a lie and people who didn't know you in some anonymous community read it,they may believe it and it would be harmful to you even if its a lie there is a chance people will believe it.This kind of thing still hurts the person even if its a lie because there are people who believe anything and these kind of lies go through until everybody thinks you are a bad guy and you didn't do anything, and it may be because of some stupid grudge that person has because you called them an idiot. I often find myself questioning what motivates people to be, well, such 'douchebags' in a game.
Recently I dove into Minecraft (which is super awesome, btw) and joined a fun server with, largely, a great regular community and fun, creative builders. So, it battles the mind that someone would simply want to waltz into a game, look around and thing, "Hey, you know what would be fun?", throws on a few hacks and starts tearing people's work apart. I mean, there're idiots like that in Halo and Modern Warfare, and other such games, and I can easily mute them, ignore them, and acknowledge that 'this is just a silly shooting game, not a big deal.' Minecraft I find is different, though, since it's a time consuming activity that you actually put genuine creativity into. Hackers/griefers/trolls and whatnot are just... strange folk, I guess. Why anyone would simply want to spout obscenities, lies, destroy another's work/fun just doesn't seem normal. Where does that get fun, really? Did I miss some teenage phase where I was supposed to be a hell raiser and run amok crushing dreams? lol Anyways, I feel for ya', Magitek. The Internet is a silly, silly place some days. Most days. All the time. -------------------- Games on the Go Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy: Four Warriors of Light Baldur's Gate Too much to play, so little time! Greg |

Congrats on quitting Everquest. I finally quit about 3 months ago. I had been playing since May 3, 1999. I know its kind of off topic (a little) but just tossing that out there! Its harder to quit than smoking/drinking/sex combined.

They sacrifice community for a lot of gameplay. After 10 years of playing mmorpgs,i think that you can either:sacrifice your community for better gameplay and have a lot of players or:have a not as good community and a huge amount of gameplay. Ultima online is one of such games that sacrifices good gameplay for huge community. I get offered help everywhere i go there. Of course there are some nasty people too,but so few that you can ignore them. The problem though, there aren't enough players to actually pursue the expansions and get loot. -------------------- We are stardust. Our bodies are made from the guts of exploding stars. Quote (Kame @ 21st November 2010 19:24) I've found that almost every community (the exception being CoN The thing about community forums that are all about talking,a lot of stuff don't happen in forums like this because generally speaking, mmorgps function differently and people take out their frustration one way or another and make up an excuse to use another as a punching bag. The interests are also different. For instant:In mmorpgs, there is a lot less community than on a forum because for them, you are just a number on big mmorpgs and they are isolationists a lot of time. Another thing:they trash talk a lot and although there can also be a truckload of trash talk on forums, its even ore so true in mmorpgs. mmorpgs are like chat rooms, nobody knows anyone and depending on the game how it functions, nobody cares about the other and their problems. If its a very big mmorpg with a lot of buying armor and ebaying, you will have far less community and the reason for this,is sacrifice of community for loot whores. Materialistic people seem to be far more self centered and have grandiose ego going along. I know that in order to keep a game going, you need people to get stuff to go to new places, but the way its done also sacrifices the community. Another thing that hurts mmorpgs,is mostly solo stuff accomplishment. In runescape, people are not very sociable either and tend to keep to themselves. I'd have to say that:Its very hard to balance a game between good gameplay and good community. A bad community can ruin the game's feeling because of jerks who destroy the game's feel with their greed and big ego. Less gameplay also ruins the mmorpg because people get bored and quit.
