If you haven't already heard tell, Square-Enix has announced sparse details on a trading card game that offers Dissidia-like gameplay, but without need of a console!

Already developed is a website with a few card samples based around Dissidia-styled Cloud, Sephiroth and Zidane, but some telltale silhouettes should easily shed light on some more heroes to come.

It seems like a potentially exciting game with more to draw on than such gaming TCGs as EverQuest or World of Warcraft, what with Final Fantasy having so many incarnations, with different characters, skills, monsters and summon to conjure up into card form. It seems like an interesting step that will likely only go well for the giant that is Square-Enix and raise an entirely new fanbase for the series, and possibly breath life into the old.

As of yet, there are no details relating to a North American release, but it is still incredibly early in development.

Oh, hey, moving into territory wildly popular almost a decade ago. At this rate they'll make a million-selling FPS in 2021, around the time the Fallout/Call of Duty crossover forever dubbed "Callout" by the 32 million pre-order players goes into open beta.

Okay, okay, it won't be that bad, it won't be nicknamed Callout.

Dismissing general antagonism towards Square-Enix and general "meh" factor of TCG's, I see the silhouettes have Aries/Aerith, Yuna, some sort of midget, Wolverine, Adolf Hitler in a big jacket, and Lighting with her trousers falling down. Though it could be Tidus wielding the worst sex toy ever.

Since I completely do not care, it seems Square-Enix are onto a winner!

But yeah, not sure at all. Are TCG's a big seller? Is it really the case there's a gap in the market these days? It seems this would only really appeal to existing fans of S-E properties and doesn't seem too likely to be targeting anyone new who wasn't already technically a part of the target audience.

I guess that's pretty much how I react to this as well. I just can't see this being terribly popular, aside from some fans of the series. I mean, if I ever come across a pack somewhere, I'd probably buy one or two for the hell of it. But it just seems to me that squenix is getting on the whole trading card bandwagon after the wheels have fallen off.

I really don't know who the 'core' fans are now. I don't think of myself as a fan or even a follower of Square Enix post-FFXII. The games they make and the stuff they sell are miles away from what I would buy now, and certainly 5+ years ago when I was a massive fan.

TCGs still seem to be popular here. A big chunk of 12-to-15 year old males are into some Yugioh-type game that I don't know the name of. In fact, it could be several games.

Sales wise, the major bookstore in my town, and the major game retailer and local game shop I patronize all deal heavily in TCG sales. I think the little game shop is fantastic: it's run by a dedicated gamer who deals in all the latest systems as well as stuff that's over 30 years old. But, whenever I go in there, it seems like I'm the only customer perusing through games. All of the young clientele have their noses stuck in an album of rare TCG cards.

Again, I don't know a lot about which game(s) are being sold, but I do know that each of those stores I mentioned has a literal wall of booster packs and several albums of specific/rare cards. The bookstore even puts tables out on Sundays and invites kids in for tournaments. I don't shop there on Sunday because it's a riot and a mess.

Anyway, the card game trend might have survived only in Japan. Or, maybe a lot of us have just grown out of the TCG target audience. Surely it's still popular among the young teen crowd in the U.S. and elsewhere, isn't it?

I think it's still fairly popular around here. I have several friends who still play Magic fairly regularly, and while helping out with the Salvation Army yesterday, there were lots of donations of packs of Pokemon cards.

Well, they just seem to be diversifying their business into other entertainment sectors--a move first heralded in their developing the FFXI MMO.

Seems like the next logical choice, really. I really hope they heed such advice as yours, though, Tryscal: A new installment that really thrills is much needed. Hasn't happened for me since XII, and before that, IX.

Of course, I would have nobody to play it with, as my wife can't stand Monopoly and doesn't care about Final Fantasy. But I'd buy it anyway.
