In celebration of the music CoNtest, I thought I would point out an interesting song I found. While digging through archives of forgotten 60s artifacts, I came across the song "Magic Potion" by a band called The Open Mind. The lyrics are a typical late 60s paean to drug use, childish and honestly pretty embarrassing from a poetic standpoint, but I did notice something pretty neat; At the musical breakdown near the end of the song, the melody sounds a whole lot like the theme from Zozo! I could see Sakaguchi and Uematsu sitting in Sakaguchi's black-light-bathed dorm room, sitting on the carpets rocking out to this one, maybe Nasir laying on the couch talking about how the whole universe is in the blackness of the spinning LP, and it staying in Nobuo's head till 1994. And the rest, they say, is history...
And if that's not what happened, you can't tell me it's not an amusing thought. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RQM4r9mo6o -------------------- "If art doesn't risk upsetting expectations and challenging its audience, it can only stagnate." |

I dunno, I don't really hear the similarities personally, at least not enough to draw a line between them. However, I can tell you this:

Yeah, perhaps I should say, which I was considering saying before: It's all a joke, really. I don't REALLY think that Uematsu heard some obscure 60s hard rock and patterned Zozo's theme after it, just that the melody sounds kinda similar, and in my VI-riddled head that was the first thing I thought of and came up with a wacky scenario to go along with it...on the plus side, that's a pretty amazing banner, I'll have to find some use for it somewhere.

Or rather he does, because I mention it to him, but...well, you know how that stuff goes. -------------------- "If art doesn't risk upsetting expectations and challenging its audience, it can only stagnate." |
