So, what kind of magazines do the members of CoN subscribe to?

I personally have a subscription to Sports Illustrated, ESPN, and Bass Player Monthly... I recently cancelled my 'scription to Rolling Stone cuz it was churning out nothing but articles about crap bands or artists. Anyone know any alternative g00d-music based magazine I could get a hold on?

I don't have a magazine subscription, but when I'm home, I read the many magazines that my parents have.

There's:

(Canadian) Reader's Digest
Canadian Living
Time magazine
MacLeans
Stitches (medical humour magazine)
Chatelaine

I have a feeling there's more, but I can't remember.

Here, Rich gets PC Magazine, Game Developer, and something else. Two of them we mysteriously just started getting.

I had no idea you could get Shonen Jump this side of the drink.

Guitar World: IMO its really declined in quality over the past year, i don't plan on renewing my subscription... dry.gif

I never had a subscription, but I used to buy excellent Japan/anime influenced SNES magazine Super Play religiously. Now that was a magazine. I stuck with its spiritual successor N64 Magazine for a while, but I lost faith in it when it started going downhill. The final straw was 85% for Yoshi's Story. If I wanted that kind of frankly wrong review, I'd buy the official magazines.

I get Sports Illustrated and ESPN currently. I used to PC Gamer and Game Informer (only because I signed up for that dealie at Gamestop/Babbages.) I don't get PC Gamer any longer because, frankly, my PC can run hardly any of the new games.

Back in the day, I used to get MacAddict. Now that was a magazine. Not sure how good it is anymore though since I haven't gotten one in over four years.

There are only two magazines I've ever subscribed to in my life (that I can remember, at least). When I was younger, it was Cricket. Now it's GAMES Magazine. At least it was before my subscription ran out in December. sad.gif

Well I work at a library so I can just read the magazines they got while I'm "working". I read these:

Car & Driver
Consumer Reports April Issue (Annual Auto Issue)
Motor Trend
Road & Track

I'm always waiting for the new issues to come in. smile.gif

I used to subscribe to SPIN but I found out it was a biased opinion in magazine. I mean, you can only praise Radiohead and bash Fred Durst so much right?

I used to get Nintendo Power, National Geographic, or Maxim. There's a very good men's magazine called Stuff, I'd check it our if I were you.

Oh yeah I used to get Nintendo Power until I found out it's nothing more than Nintendo's propaganda machine. They made the N64 sound like the greatest thing ever. dry.gif 'nuff said.

It's better to stick with the magazines that cover all consoles.

I get Sports Illustrated, Playboy, and, of course, the best news magazine ever and the only one I will read, The Economist. It is a European news mag that isn't incredibly biased like the ones over here and has a lot of good editorials. I like to know what you Euros think of us every now and then.

Back when we were doing this thing called QVC in school, I got a subscription from myself and got Game Players Guide to Super Nintendo. I kept that subscription over the years as it changed to Game Players Guide to Nintendo and Sega. Time wore on and with Atari's and 3DO's consoles roughly starting out the 64/32 bit age, it became simply Game Players. Then the TRUE next generation consoles appeared, the Playsation, Saturn and Nintendo 64. Game Players became Ultra Game Players. This was a golden age when Gazuga the three-eyed, bat-winged monkey god rienged supreme and the armies of the undead lizards, protected by the meager shell-catchers and swinging their unholy skull bats, conquered the known world. And lo, the pipe mold did flow from the gerbil tubing and covered the land, and it was good.

Then Next Generation came along and made everything techno-serious and all that fun got tossed out the window. Ultra Game Players became Ultra...somethingorother...can't really remember. It just became this overly stylish pussy mag that eventually got tossed. My subscription was now replaced with Next Generation, which was a 'serious' mag. It followed the buzz of the industry, the way it worked. Large, in depth articles about the history of and controveseys of videogame past, present and future. While it didn't have the acid trip humor of my old mag, this new one made me feel a shitload smarter, so I was happy. However, a few years passed and once again, tell tell signs of disaster reared their puss filled heads. The mag got noticably smaller, the name changed to Next Gen and ultimately, it died too. My subscription was changed once more to Playstation...I think. It gets rather hazy after that. It's been a few years.

Let's see, I think it was Playstation Mag, which was good, cause it has a lot of the folks from Game Players. Then there was...hmm...PSM now? Maybe. I'll have ta find out next time I go down there.

Let's see... I actually have a subscription to GMR, also for the 10% off at EB, but also because it's a decent magazine. I also read EGM, Instinct (gay magazine), and XY (gay teen magazine, even though I'm 21 tongue.gif ). I don't have subscriptions to those last 3, but I will once I open a bank account (XY's expensive, though sad.gif )

I was suscribed to PCGamer but I kinda lost interest in it ever since it did a article about Baulders Gate 2: Shadows Of Amn and rated it O.K., after that I lost interest in that magazine forever.

P.S. that game hella sucked! and I cant remember if the mag was PCGamer or not just to clearify(sp?) that

You'd have lost favour with a lot of magazines, in fairness, since it was a generally highly rated game, and not unjustly in the view of most people I've met. I personally find it a much more fulfilling gameplay experience than Final "Press [OK] 400 times to complete game" Fantasy these days. But I'm controversial. (At least for an FF forum admin.) And I can't really say anything since I did the same with N64 Mag/Yoshi's Story (though the mistrust had been building for a few issues, there).

Biased reviews can be a problem, though, which is exactly the reason a multi-format magazine is often the best way to go, though unofficial per-format magazines can work out alright. I forgot to mention it above, perhaps because it wasn't made of paper, but I did view Teletext's multi-format-covering funny-but-informative Digitiser daily before it collapsed into the worthless GameCentral. Also a fine "magazine".

Wow, you're like the only person I've ever met that didn't like the Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn biggrin.gif .

PCGamer had the reverse effect on me. I don't subscribe to any magazines, but my father gets that mag. When I read the article I thought it looked sweet, and I'm glad I got that game, it's one of my favorite games of all time.

And Tiddles, I completely agree with you on that "Press [OK] 400 times" area. At least the dialogue allowed for some very interesting responses throughout the game, rather than in most games I played where no matter what you answer (and it's usually yes or no question), they ask you again until you choose the correct answer. I also find the sheer freedom to be a huge bonus as to why I enjoy it so much.

Anyways, I used to subscribe to Nintendo Power, and I have issues all the way back to the very first one, but I lost interest after about the 120-130th issue (deep into the N64 area, and beginning to cover the GameCube, which I had no intention of buying). I enjoyed it until the magazine ads were on almost every other page. Plus, obviously, it was biased, and it put some false hope into games that influenced my buying like Quest 64, Battle Tanks, Kirby 64, Top Gear Rally, and most especially Hexen. I've regretted buying all of those games.

I get a Swedish game magazine called Super PLAY every month (Hello, Tiddles!). A really great game magazine with great writers and great information.

I also get a manga magazine called Manga Mania (original name, huh? biggrin.gif ). Perhaps not the best manga you can get, but it's better than nothing. Sweden is SO poor on manga. This magazine is actually the FIRST official manga magazine in Sweden, and it was released in 2003 (can you imagine that!? blink.gif ).

I only get two, FHM (For Him Magazine) and Muscle and Fitness. Both serve their own purposes. FHM for when I am on the can and want to read something with good jokes, hot women with not much on, and interesting tidbits. Muscle and Fitness help me with, of course, lifting and give me new work-outs to try when the current one doesn't work anymore. Once I become a full-fledged teacher I will probably also subscribe to some scholastic magazines (i.e. magazines dealing with history, government, etc.)

I used to get Nintendo Power back in the hayday of Super Nintendo, and it was actually that magazine that got me interested in FFVI, or FFIII as it was back then.
