Finished Speed Grapher and Vandread this week. I had plenty of warnings as to their alleged mediocrity (apparently Gonzo's calling card) but rather enjoyed both. As for anime I actually own, I have the first ten eps of Bebop on DVD...pretty paltry.

What about Gonzo?

I've only seen two Gonzo productions, and I love the graphics of both--Kiddy Grade and Yukikaze. Especially Yukikaze, whose animation probably would deserve an 11/10 if it didn't mess up some animation of humans. Kiddy Grade was also nice-looking, in terms of graphical details and atmospherics.

From Gonzo?

Blassreiter - a sci-fi action series set in near-future Germany, about an infection that turns human corpses into a variation of the Borg. Nice idea, awesome initial plot concerning a crippled motorcycle racing pro, good action scens. Plot spirals down into "make all the characters suffer" about halfway through if not earlier. Ending is a load of bull.
Disappointing.

Tower of Druaga - a lighthearted and comedic follow-up to the video game series of the same name. Some serious moments exist. JRPG references, anachronistic jokes, an interesting plot and an exciting final boss fight. Second season was a let-down, with an unnecessary increase in fanservice, some asinine plot developments and a god-awful ending, but overall, I recommend this series.

Shangri-La - a post-apocalyptic story about a teenaged girl with pink hair that just got out of prison, who has a female bodyuard with the voice of count Dracula. Better than it sounds, but the ending is still poor.

Gankutsuou - a sci-fi adaptation of Dumas' "Count of Monte Christo", with some slight and some big changes, narrated from Albert Morcerf's point of view. Unique and artful graphic style, wonderful music, unsurprising but well narrated plot. Watch it it's awesome.
Oh, but the ending is bull.

I do hope you see the pattern.

I thought Gonzo was an animation studio, not a script studio. Was I wrong?

I just realized what the poll said haha ;P but I only own two of the animes, which are G-Gundam and Gundam Wing.

Apart from the more populer anime, like Bleach and Naruto etc, I haven't been watching much worth mentioning. With the Fullmetal Alchemist comic complete, I'll probably start watching 'FMA: Brotherhood' sooner or later. Oh! I did finally get around to watching 'Yu yu Hakusho' which was amazing.

Has anyone else seen 'Berserk'?

I thought they were both.

Graphics-wise, I would doubly recommend Gankutsuou, for it's rare, if not unique, art style and music.

Anime film director Satoshi Kon died early this morning, of pancreatic cancer. He was only 46. Kon's directed four films (Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, and Paprika), one full series (Paranoia Agent), plus a few shorts and collaborations. His last movie, The Dream Machine, has completed production and comes out in 2011.

For my money, Kon is the greatest anime film director of all time other than Hayao Miyazaki. Even though I hardly follow anime anymore, I always am interested in anything he's attached to. I liked Tokyo Godfathers so much when I saw it about 5 or 6 years ago that I tracked down copies of all of Kon's other films and watched Paranoia Agent when it aired on Adult Swim like it was my job. I even saw the official subtitled version of Paprika in my university's movie theater. This is a huge loss for anime fans.

of all time

OF ALL TIME!

...sorry.

Anyway, I've seen Tokyo Godfathers and Millenium Actress. I'm not a fan of the more mind-screwy style of the latter's presentation, but of course that was part of the point, the blending of reality and fiction. However, I loved the first one; it's an awesome Christmas story, and does a great job at transforming the crapsack setting of the beginning (homeless dude, runaway kid, and drag queen, in the city slums) into a heartwarming tale by using good ol' Christmastime charm.

R.I.P. Satoshi Kon

...yeah, I seriously recommend Tokyo Godfathers if you're looking for something special and not completely overused to show your family and friends during the end of year holiday season.

Its very sad Satoshi Kon died, he died so young too.. I loved Paranoia Agent, though I haven't seen his other works yet. Though on the subject of mindscrew, Chiaki J. Konaka is one of my favorite writers, I especially love Serial Experiments Lain, and Haibane Renmei.

The Umineko anime is.. it isn't particularly good, the original sound novel is much more interesting. They just skip too much.

I started watching Clannad After Story now, I'm really liking it, but its going to get sadder I'm sure..

Hey, what about how I felt when I found out that my recently-discovered favorite pop composer, Ritsuko Okazaki, also died young back in 2004?

FYI she wrote theme songs for various animé series, including Fruits Basket, Love Hina, and (as a member of the duo Melocure) UFO Princess Valkyrie and Stratos 4. She has a very lyrical and calming style, but especially when she teamed up with Megumi Hinata in Melocure, this evolved into an extremely awesome heavy rock ballad + beautiful lyrical melodies style, which produced two of the greatest rock ballads I've heard:
So Far, So Near
Agapé

Quick post here. Scratch that.

I recently saw the Detective Conan vs Lupin III special.
It was, to use an adequate word, glorious. The plot is, predictably enough, a merge between a Lupin caper and Conan murder-case, the character interactions between regulars of different series are highly amusing, several different art styles next to each other somehow work out fine.

I highly recommend watching it, but the obvious problem is that without knowing both series, even on the most basic of levels, many things will be confusing to the viewer.

Then again, I can heartily recommend Detective Conan (a.k.a. Case Closed) and Lupin the 3rd any day of the week, so I hereby do. Watch these. Then watch the special.

It's fun.

Has anyone here watched Kaiji? It's an awesome series about a young college dropout who's in debt and gets tricked by the yakuza to join a gambling cruise ship. It does an incredible job at showing how the human mind works.

I also like the following anime/manga:
One Piece
Welcome to the N.H.K.
Last Exile
Azumanga Daioh
Akagi
Kino's Journey
Hellsing
Pretty much everything by Miyazaki, especially Totoro No Tonari
Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei
Gurren Lagann
Nabari No Ou
Monster

Finished Kaiji yesterday.

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
The ending made me shed manly tears. Hyoudou, you monster...! This calls for a second season though.

I'm watching Azumanga Daioh again... It's so cute and addictive.
