Now she's even MORE awesome.
Okay, everyone knows what an "isosceles" triangle is, right? It's a triangle with two equal sides, for those who don't. Now, does anyone see a name in the word "isosceles"? That's right, Celes' name is in there. A coincidence you say? Not in the slightest. Her name was chosen because of the duality she represents. The cold, calculating general, and the sweet, tender woman, desperately searching for acceptance. And before anyone says "But wait, Celes was just there to contrast with Terra, right?" Well, yeah, but that also proves my point. They are two sides of the same coin: equal angles. Celes is a lost soul looking for love, and hides it by distancing herself from others, and Terra is also looking for love, but has trouble because she questions whether or not she is capable of it. Thoughts, comments? Please post! gotta disagree, i always thought her name came from the Roman godess Ceres, the godess of harvests (which coincides with terras 'earth' meaning)
or it could mean celestial, as in the stars and space and stuff to contrast earth. square may take names from many things for main characters, but i hardly think geometry is one of them. (talking about just main characters here) -------------------- Aujourdhui a commence avec toi. |

don't chocobos rule? is right. But you were right about them being polar opposites. Terra represents the Earth, and Celes represents the sky.
The celes part of isosceles comes from the Greek word skelos, meaning "leg." Celestial not only means sky, it also can mean bright (celestial body is a bright object in the sky). That can be attributed to the Opera Scene, and it is related to other scenes. Possible spoilers: highlight to view When or if she attempts suicide, the sky behind her turns black. Powerful symbolism connected to her name. Also, the name Chere, her last name, is french for "dear." Meanwhile Terra is related to the Earth. The significance of that symbolism is clearly represented throughout the game's plot. But, her original name is Tina, or "mother." More obvious symbolism. But I do agree. They do such a great job with this in the game, because the story has so many layers and it is such a grand operatic story. That's why I consider it the best in the series. Edit One more edit. I thought you'd find this interesting. Kitase Interview This post has been edited by BlitzSage on 23rd September 2010 02:15 -------------------- |

I seem to recall making an "I saw Celes" joke in Jr. High math...yes, somehow I was an even bigger nerd then than I am now...

Nah. Otherwise they would of called Locke or Terra "Isos " to make the connection.
