For PS3/PSP, whatever you prefer. I'm a big fan of the series and I want to not only support it however I can (mostly because I, and most other Suiko fans, want them to pick up the series and make another one, and hopefully they'll put the second game up as well), but honestly anyone calling themselves an RPG fan needs to play this game. It's a classic in every sense of the word, and it's the first out of one of the most expansive and engaging RPG universes of its era, even now.

So yeah, if you've never played it before, check it out. IT'S SIX DOLLARS

I saw that the other day while I was browsing the Playstation Store and it's great to find another Suikoden fan. I love that series. I actually get more excited about a new Suikoden game than a FF game, probably because these are more few and far between. I hope they make a full PS3 games soon. Nothing posted on Komami's website or IGN but I keep hoping. I check every month or so.

Thanks for sharing this, as I'll almost certainly be making this purchase over winter break now! As a few people in chat know, I've been wanting to get at this for a while but without spending a small fortune on ebay for it. I was holding out/hoping they'd release it on PSN, so I'm pretty excited to hear this.

Does sound intersting though. It isn't a board-game RPG like Disgaea, right? I dislike those for no particular reason.

Hopefully staying on the Suikoden topic, has anyone played Suikoden Teirkreis for DS? Is it any good? Is it better than IV? (IV was the worst of the series but I still liked it)

I have 1 through 3 on disc complete in the case with book and back art work. I need to start 2 again so I can beat it and start 3 all over with the data exchange thingy what ever it was called. But I love these and want to get 4,5 and tactics.

Suikodens 1-3 are fantastic games. You're a fan of Pokémon, right? I think for you, the appeal of "collecting" 108 characters would be a big sell. They have excellent stories, very fun gameplay (parties of six people), and really good music. There's a slight downside of less character development as there are so many of them, but the game does a good job of giving 20-25 of them actual important roles in the storyline and leaving the rest in the background. Feel free to skip Suikoden 4 unless you're a masochist.

What's the battle system like? And what's out-of-battle gameplay like? I do kinda like the idea of having parties of six people.

And I used to be a fan of Pokémon--but only when up through the second generation, when I stopped playing the games. I couldn't keep up with the TV show (which was difficult because there were so many episodes being shown, and I actually care about plot continuity), and there were just too many new mons to deal with, and I really hate the idea of having event-based exclusives. I might be open to a Pokémon MMORPG, though...

Anyway, back on topic: I don't know how well I respond to large sets of characters to choose from, but I do know I didn't mind FFTA's clan size of 24, and I'm currently playing Fire Emblem for the first time. Sure, characters don't get screen time, but I also have an imagination on my own.

There are actually three types of battles. The first is the battle where you and a party of up to five others are pitted against various monsters and rivals. However, unlike many other games, there is no dependence on a certain skill or spell to get you through the fights. You can only cast spells so many times before they run out. The fights are not overly hard nor are they too easy. Although, since there are still random encounters, you will be pitted against the same batch of enemies multiple times while navigating a dungeon. This is where ‘Free Will' comes into play. At the start of each round, you are given a choice between manually choosing what each character will do, running from the enemy, bribing the enemy or ‘Free Will'. What it does is automate your party's actions, giving your characters a temporary AI script. This works well when facing enemies that are easily dispatched, although when facing new enemies or bosses, it's often wise to monitor your actions.

The second type of battling is the clash of your army against the Imperial army. The actions resemble rock-paper-scissors. You can choose to charge, use archers or cast magic. ‘Charge' means you have your soldiers advance and fight close up with the enemy. ‘Bow' has your archers fling a volley of arrows towards your enemy. ‘Magic' has your sorcerers cast a spell on the enemy. You also have the option of ‘Other' that allows you to use miscellaneous actions, such as trying to convince some of your enemy to join you, finding out your enemy's next strategy or increasing your charge attack power. In the end, it comes down to how well you have assembled your army and your own foresight.

The third type of battling does not occur often, but it is still noteworthy, nonetheless. It is called dueling, and often happens after the army fights. It also resembles rock-paper-scissors in a way, allowing you the option of ‘Attack', ‘Defend' and ‘Desperate attack'. These are often fun to replay and sometimes, depending on the outcome of the match, can alter the course of the game.

Its a fun game while it lasts (20 + hrs to complete) and Suikoden 2 is just as awesome. I would stay away from the PS2 Suikodens except for Tactics which I found rather enjoyable.

I would at least give the PS2 games a try instead of just writing them off. I loved 3. It was actually my favorite. 4 wasn't all that great but I trudged through it and felt satisfied by the end. 5 was pretty awesome. What catches me most about the series is the intrigue and betrayal that happens in the storyline and the fact that all the games are connected with characters, relatives of characters, and various things of that nature. The games reference different things from each other which I just love.

Here's one of my favorite examples: I'll spoiler it just in case it upsets someone to have this "revealed"

In Suikdoen I, when trying to sneak into an area you have the option of saying your name is Stoltheim Reinbach III. In Suikoden III, I believe during an attack of one of the areas someone asks who you are and one of the options is to say that you are Stoltheim Reinbach III. Then in Suikoden IV one of the characters is Reinbach III.

Just out of curiosity IV which I've been told should be avoided by many people. Do you still have the option of loading your save file from III. like you can I in II and II in III. if so I want to get it.

Unfortunately no. I couldn't remember actually so I check a walkthrough on GameFAQs and it said that there wasn't. It wasn't a continuation off of III. It was a whole new game, though, it still contained references to previous places areas and whatnot. If I remember correctly, chronologically it takes place before Suikoden I
