Is there a way to die after beating the game?

Specifically, I've beat the Game Boy Color version, which is Dragon Warrior I in the I & II combo pack.

After you beat the final boss, you get to do a "world tour" the way that a certain famous semi-retro RPG for the SNES does. You can walk around the world and talk to people, all of whom have different lines now (though many of them are admittedly repeats).

Details of the world tour follow, including the question I'm asking:

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
So you get all sorts of new features, including even talking to the ghost of Garin the bard.

But you can't die. All the swamps on the world map and inside towns are converted to flower beds. Even if you go back inside the DracoLord's castle, and take off your Loto Armor, and walk on the swamp or drain tiles, you still don't lose HP.

And there are no more random encounters.

I mean, in Earthbound, at least you could leave the Shattered Men alone in the museum and use them to die. But what about here? The only possibility I can think of is if I didn't save Princess Lora/Lady Lora/Princess Gwaelin/whatever her name is, and didn't kill that Dragon--would it still be there?

Also, treat this as a general thread for DQ1, if you'd like to talk about other DQ1 issues.

I can't answer your question, but I can thank you for telling me that there's a Game Boy Color version. I have been wanting to play the original again for quite a while, as i never finished it before (I was nine!). Does the GBC version play any faster than the NES one? That is the main thing stopping me from going back to it, since I'd likely be playing it on my PSP I'm not sure if I'll have full control over speeding up the emulation.

To the best of my knowledge, all fixed encounters vanish, and the swamp and barrier tiles no longer hurt you. Nothing to do but walk around basking in the fact that you're unkillable.

Though I admit I didn't know about the shattered men in Earthbound...I seem to recall I tried getting sunstroke and figured that I was invincible after it didn't take.

I've never played this game before so I have to ask...

Why would you wanna lose in the first place?

Because subverting game design intent. biggrin.gif

Rangers 51: I don't know, since I haven't played the NES version. I know there's also an SNES version (with a completed translation patch), and I think there's also a DS version. You can just look up "List of Dragon Quest media" on Wikipedia for that information.

The GBC version, which also supports SGB (or maybe just SGB2, I'm not sure) colors and borders (which means that it is also playable on non-color GB, since SGB and SGB2 don't take GBC-only games), doesn't use the NES names--for example, Erdrick is Loto, Haukness is Domdora, Gwaelin is Lora, and so on. Monster stats also seem to be redone--for example, the Goldman has about 100 HP rather than about 50 HP. FYI, I beat the game at about level 20, with some difficulty.
