I was thinking of this last night as I was doing my third play through of FFT this time on the PSP and thinking of some parts of the game the game that were hard and that I wasn't looking forward to going through again and it made me want to ask the question.....what are some games that you liked, that you finished but you'd never want to play through them ever again for any reason, i.e. a really hard part of the game or the game in and of itself was so hard.....The game that I have that completely fits this bill is Breath of Fire III. I really liked the game and though it had a good story but goodness was it hard. Al the time had to spend doing extra battles just to level my characters and get good equipment was excruciating. Plus, there were a couple difficult mini games for me as well.

This includes some games that I generally liked but had very tedious portions.
As well as most RPGs. I'm generally not the kind of person to replay games anyway; I only rarely do. And for what it's worth, I've never fully replayed any RPG before, except for Super Mario RPG (and only because it's just that much fun). Basically all of the RPGs I've played are JRPGs so these comments pertain to JRPGs. I know I do enjoy going through the drama of the story. And the enjoyment of discovery, of uncovering new areas and skills and such, also drives my play experience. However, the second time around, these things have lost their novelty value, and thus I have far less reason to once again grind through lots of battles in order to see the same story unfold again. Perhaps I might replay some of these games many years down the road. I've been considering replaying FF 4, 5, or 6, using one of the GBA versions. Or, alternatively, playing i90east's FFVI Expert Version 2 hack. I played FFVI about seven years ago, and basically haven't touched it since, except for maybe an hour or less worth of merely trying to grind the cursed shield into the paladin shield--and getting very bored in the process. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. i replay games pretty much all the time, tis great fun picking out all the little things, although i will never ever replay ff xiii. ive never been one of those people who have said "final fantasy is dead, its not the same as it used to be, this new one will suck" but this newest one sucked. bad story, horrid characters, shoddy writing, bad strategy elements (i was fine with gambits, but now you want to play the game for me?), too linear, not enough incentive to do anything really. it was just not good, the only thing i liked about it was what kept me going: where will i be next. i loved the scenery and the large areas (even though you couldnt explore them). the city under seige level, the airship, the mines, loved 'em. but the other stuff keeps me from playing through it again.

There was an old action-RPG published by Enix, I believe, called Brain Lord that I used to rent all the time as a kid. In the last area in the game there are a series of mazes in total blackness that, no fooling, are the worst areas I have ever played in any game ever. They get progressively more infuriating and totally negate any modicum of enjoyability that the rest of the game had, and any time I think to myself "maybe I'll pop in Brain Lord" I think back to seriously taking a half hour navigating one room and decide to pop in Illusion of Gaia instead.
Other than that, most other games I'll probably not play again are ones that were mediocre at best, enjoyable enough to finish but then to put away and forget about (Silent Hill: Shattered Memories comes to mind). I can't really think of any other games I legitimately enjoyed that I wouldn't play again. -------------------- "If art doesn't risk upsetting expectations and challenging its audience, it can only stagnate." |

Lufia 1. I played it after Lufia 2, so it was already at a disadvantage being compared to such a fantastic game, but the system was only really worth playing through once. It grew very tedious by the end, as you were just doing the same thing over and over.

When playing through Thief: Deadly Shadows, it takes me the longest time to get past Shalebridge Cradle. Not completing the level - which is fairly easy compared to others - but working up the nerve to just enter it. Silent Hill can suck it compared this sole level.

Almost every game I've ever played, actually.

First game that came to mind: Ace Combat 6. I love airplane games but that game left a sour taste in my mouth: boring missions packed with filler, boring wingmen and radio chatter, and a lame story. Maybe I'll go back and play some of the multiplayer, but campaign has little replay value.

I know exactly where you're coming from on this one. I've played the 3 main Thief games, and each Zombie/Ghost level really makes me huff and puff about it before plunging into it. Ever play the original Thief game? Remember the Cathedral level with the Eye? Or even the fourth mission in where you have to go into some mausoleum or something to retrieve an artifact. Nooooo way. Edit: To NP's post below, yeah, mine can only run Thief: Deadly Shadows now. I tried re-installing The Dark Project not too long ago and the game kept exploding whenever I tried to launch a game. Ninja gaiden 1 2 3 Castlevania 1 and 3:I like games that have a little challenge, but these games just flat out annoy me.
I actually may replay ninja gaiden 2 some day as i enjoy it. FF8:I found the game really hard to stay focused in. The game's long cutscenes linearity and its tedious and norotiously overcomplicated junction system just turn me away. I can't get past the third cd due to lack of motivation and interest. The game simply bores me to death. I have to literally force myself to play it. When you have to force yourself to sit down and play something,it makes the game even less enjoyeable. Ultima 3:As much as i like ultima, this game has no more purpose anymore because i beat it and i simply have no reason to play it anymore. The ending sucks and the game is just more of the same boring tedious gameplay. It has issues with the actuall repetitive nature of the game that needs fixing and for that reason, its gameplay goes down a lot. FF6:I love the game to death, but i played it so many times that i can't do it anymore. I simply beat it too many times already to actually have desire to beat it again. Oblivion:I really like this game and all,but unless they fix the stupid bugs,i can't be bothered to play. The bugs ruin the gameplay by making it impossible to actually do what you are supposed to do and to finish missions sometimes due to pathing issues. Like:One day i entered the alchemy shop with my thief planning to raise alchemy to max level and the stupid shop owner ran out. What i found seamlessly hilarious is how the guard chased him down and killed the alchemy guy and he didn't even attack. I was like:WHAT? you're kidding me right? why is this happening? I mean do these guys test the game before getting it out? because it was full of pathing bugs and exploitable bugs. Besides that, the caves are boring and repetitive and the only caves i actually did were for missions. ff2 and ff3 nes:once was enough for me for now to play these games. The third final fantasy could be a lot of fun at times, but there were way too many fights and having to fight every monster in the game was really annoying. This became really bad at sylx because you were forced to fight eveyrthing and ended up over leveling. FF2 nes:The game had terrible balance and the boss was not even challenging. Over all:The story was nothing special. For its time i guess it was ok since it did have characters with i guess a little bit of personality, but barely. I also can't be bothered since its almost as bad as ff3 nes with those fights except you can run away but only like 30-50% of the time. The number varies and it is not until the end when you can almost insta kill every enemy with a cheap frog/mini spell and have cheap refill in mana via swap and mana drain that you can keep on doing it. I just don't see the point really as i like ff1's gameplay better. -------------------- We are stardust. Our bodies are made from the guts of exploding stars. Neil Degrasse Tyson. |

How you feel about FFVIII is how I'm feeling about FFXIII though. I'm so bored with FF XIII.
Do you guys experience the boredom like me? it feels like the levels go on forever. I feel like putting the control down and never playing it again. -------------------- We are stardust. Our bodies are made from the guts of exploding stars. Neil Degrasse Tyson. |
