I was thinking about getting a Sega Saturn for my birthday. But just looked at the Phillips cdi. I kind of remember playing one of the Zelda games on it at the mall and liking it. So do any of y'all consider these as actual entries as Zelda games not by official time line if any but as for example... Metal Gear Solid for GBC is considered a true Metal Gear game despite not being in the actual time line. Or are too different to be true Zelda games.

Oh and on a personal note being I liked the one I played should I get a cdi instead of a Saturn being it's harder to find or go for the Saturn.

I consider them Zelda games, but then again, I consider Final Fantasy Adventure (i.e. Seiken Densetsu 1) to be a Final Fantasy game.

There are three games; you probably played the one that sucked the least--i.e. the one that's not Link: the Faces of Evil or Zelda: the Wand of Gamelon. I think it's called Zelda's Adventure.

I also admit to watching a lot of YouTube Poop, in which the Zelda and Mario CD-i games' cutscenes are common source material for wacky remixes, word-splicing, and general hijinx.

In other news, after you've scrubbed all the floors in Hyrule, Magitek_slayer, then we can talk about the controls and the dialog!

Was Zelda's Adventure the one that played like The Adventures of Link? Which at the time was my Favorite. That is before Majora's Mask. Which I know is 2 of the worst in what many call the official series if you don't consider the CD-i games. Just call me easily amused.

Also I'm still confused rather I should go with Saturn to get Shinning Force 3 or just get a CD-i so I can get these three Zelda games.

Which I have every other Zelda game on one system or the other with exception of Spirit Tracks and obviously Skyward Sword . For example I don't have the original LoZ,AoL,OoT or MM cartridges but I have the Game Cube bundle you know the collectors disk.

Well, the Saturn is more of a traditional console, with some decent games on it.

If you get a CD-i and these games, note that you probably won't actually enjoy playing these games. But on the other hand, they are pretty well-known and probably have high keepsake value, even if their fame is infamy.

I would get a Saturn. Outside of the cheesy cutscenes, the Zelda CD-i games aren't terrible, really. just...well, pretty mediocre I guess. Decent but pedestrian action-platformers, similar to Adventure of Link, but lacking the charm that makes that game so enjoyable (well, for me, anyway). Shining Force, on the other hand, is a solid series, and though I'll admit that I haven't played the third game, they haven't let me down yet.

Maybe, but only if you can find them for $2-$10.

On second thought, you might as well just watch AVGN's videos about it.

Actually, on third thought, hey, give them a chance. What're you gonna lose? ....Except possibly money? But hey, money isn't everything.

I kind of hate polls like this because I feel they're ridiculous. I voted yes because if it has "The Legend of Zelda" on it, it's a Zelda game. Even if it sucks. And I feel the same with all the FF games as well. Even the ones I don't like.

The Zelda CDi games don't tread any unusual grounds for the series, as the second game was a platformer and Capcom's Oracle games were licensed, so they technically count as much as any other. One's even a top down game like the originals, albeit it looks like its the least inspired of the bunch.

That being said, the videos I've watched about the side scrollers are none too flattering and they don't appear to live up to the level of quality set by all the other games in the series. Graphics as an aside since for a good game they're not the most important aspect, they look like the sort of game you might be able to enjoy playing for 5 minutes before the poor implementation becomes glaringly apparent. As Blitzsage has mentioned, AVGN's video goes over all of the common complaints, albeit he's got a bit of a foul mouth and a general focus on bad reviews. There are others though and they go through the exact same points.

I'd recommend watching this multi-part CDi review. Unfortunately it also contains some vulgarity and general bias towards negativity. However it's a more complete overview of the system, suggests some lesser known games, makes a short comparison to Zelda II and uses the FF VI fanfare in the intros which is suggestive of his general tastes.

They're not good as games but their rarity and campy repute makes them unusually good collector's items. Since you'd watched AVGN's video on the cdi games, you should know he paid around the 60 dollars each. One of the zelda games cost even 120! Too rich for my blood, at least for a game that has a terrible repute and appears as if it can only be mediocre at best...

I kinda remember playing one of the Saturn games, just once at a demo kiosk. It always vaguely stuck into the back of my head after that one experience because it left an absolutely fantastic first impression, albeit it was a long time ago so I had a hard time recalling what it was until I got an internet connection and was able to research it on the web.

Turns out the game is a bit of a cult classic star player for the system, called Nights into Dreams. Here's a video containing the introductory videos and a bit of gameplay. I'd say its worth owning a Saturn for myself, albeit there is also a PS2 version with reduxed and original graphics... Unfortunately it's in japanese and region locked. Curses! sad.gif

One thing about CD based systems is saving the game, I don't know how it works with the CDi but with the Saturn I have very limited experience with, I think you need a cartridge like memory card, unless the original internal battery is still good, which it couldn't be since it only has a lifespan of like, 4 or 5 years...

For what it's worth, I do of course recommend the Saturn if you actually mean to do some serious gaming on the system.

Now, on the other hand, if you want to see what games there are on CD-i, these two videos--parts 2a and 2b of the series Tonepoet linked to--will tell you what sorts of games there generally are on the CD-i.

It seems that developers did indeed try to take of the massive graphical capabilities of the CD-i, relative to the other systems of the day. But, somewhere along the way, gameplay quality wasn't given enough attention. There's of course some shovelware, and some sketchy games, but also some quality stuff like 7th Guest and The Apprentice. Of course, by far the most famous CD-i games are the Zelda and Mario games--which, for better or worse, serves to back up the commentator's analysis of what was wrong with the CD-i as a gaming console: lack of major third-party support.

You should definitely watch those two videos; they're worth it even if you never plan on touching a CD-i. They're a very good hindsight into the state of the gaming industry at the time.

I basically consider the CDI LoZ games to be non-canon when it comes to the LoZ series.
