I have to say that this song is the best rpg song i have ever heard in my life.
I would not be far by saying it as the mixture of post apocalyptic feel and gothic feel is amazing. Obviously not everybody liked bach or music that sounds like church music. I don-t think the game would work if it had been any other way because the style itself suits the era perfectly of late 1700-s early 1800. -------------------- We are stardust. Our bodies are made from the guts of exploding stars. I really like Bach. He's one of my favorite composers: the first song from Fantasia (Toccata and Fugue in D minor), and this.
Dancing Mad is a great piece of music, maybe the best I've heard in a video game. The transition into the church style music at the top tier is amazing. It's a perfect song to end the game on. -------------------- |

My personal favorites in rpg music themes are from:
FF9 FF4 and ff6 There is just something amazing about ff6 themes which are put in brilliantly Also:There are other songs like one winged angel which are about on par with the kuja theme. dancing mad is just 1 or 2 levels higher than the rest and it shows with the fine mixture. I don't think uematsu has come close again for a boss theme, although the heavy metal song from FFX is really good. If you like music on piano blitzsage,do you like new orleans music like:Doctor john? Do you like modern classical music? -------------------- We are stardust. Our bodies are made from the guts of exploding stars. Neil Degrasse Tyson. |

I also really liked Dancing Mad: so much that I printed off the sheet music for it on piano (ffshrine.org, if anyone's interested). It took a little while and I still am pretty finger tied on a few of the really crazy bits, but it sounds really cool on piano.
As for modern classical, I'm very into modern choral music. Of the composers considered within this genre, I'd have to say my favoirtes are Eric Whitacre, Morten Lauridsen and John Tavener. Just about anything they do sounds great as far as I'm concerned. Each has their own interesting way of blending harmony: Tavener with a great eerie, echoing sound, Lauridsen with a great technique of alternating melody and Whitacre with his famous dissonance. Dancing Mad sets the mood for the final battle perfectly. When I first heard it, I couldn't believe a song like that could be on a SNES game hahaha, and I still don't get why One Winged Angel gets all the hype...

For mid evil sounding music:I love the incredible string band.
It is all mid evil instruments of simple string instruments and flutes and sounds just perfect. Along with that is singing. Death penalty:If you plan to play dancing mad on piano why not link it here? Let us get a little taste. crims0nf0rtune:One winged angel is a pretty good song, but yeah it is a little overrated like everything that relates to ff7. Quote (Magitek_slayer @ 24th April 2010 12:40) For mid evil sounding music:I love the incredible string band. Wow, really? I didn't know anyone else knew ISB, that's great! You ever hear Shirley and Dolly Collins, Magitek? Dolly did a lot of ISB's arrangements. But yeah, Dancing Mad holds a special place in my heart since FFVI was the first game in the series I had beaten (I played I and IV prior, but I don't think I understood the FF system well until 93-94). It's so epic and yeah, Uematsu cribbing Bach is a match made in heaven. If anyone hasn't heard it, check out Michael Huang's piano arrangement at http://www.fantasyreborn.com/ff.html And as far as One Winged Angel goes, I prefer Liberi Fatali as far as "songs where Uematsu took elements from Carmina Burnana" but both are pretty good pieces. -------------------- "If art doesn't risk upsetting expectations and challenging its audience, it can only stagnate." |

Quote (Magitek_slayer @ 24th April 2010 08:31) If you like music on piano blitzsage,do you like new orleans music like:Doctor john? Oh yeah, I love Doctor John. I'm a big fan of jazz in general. They're all just great musicians. There's a group called Fourplay, which is awesome. Great piano song here. I have not really listened to modern classical music (kind of an oxymoron, lol, but I digress). Probably the newest piece of classical music that I love is Rite of Spring. But when you think about it, most film music is classical, and Uematsu's music is done in a classical way as well. Quote (crims0nf0rtune) I couldn't believe a song like that could be on a SNES game hahaha, and I still don't get why One Winged Angel gets all the hype... A possible answer is that the PSX just had better sound quality, so Uematsu could use an orchestra. I've always said the same thing about FFVI vs. FFVII: it's the spectacle. People got caught up in the spectacle of Final Fantasy 7, and didn't look at the substance. -------------------- |

I never heard of shirley colins.
Maybe it was the circumstance,oh well. I used to listen to steely dan as a kid and still listen to steely dan once in a while. I was brought up listening to:steely dan,the eagles paul simon harry nilson roy orbison the beatles eric clapton cream blind faith. lynrd skynr tom petty and many many more. Oh yeah blues travelers bob dylan etc. I was very very young when i listened to this and moved into more complex things as i grew older and became accustomed to it. Later on i got to hear stuff i never heard before like:aretha franklin bb king muddy waters the band doctor john bb king ray charles etc. I was born in a family where music is important. And going back to the subject of ff6 to not anger the mods:I loved the grand finale in ff6,it is just so epic. Did anybody think grand finale was one of the best songs in the game? Oh yeah blues travelers bob dylan etc. I love Steely Dan, and Bob Dylan, a lot. In fact, Steely Dan is still one of my favorite groups, and Bob Dylan... well, he's amazing. The Band is great also, but I wouldn't say that these people are less complex, ever. Bob Dylan's probably the greatest songwriter to ever live, and Steely Dan are some of the best music arrangers ever too. Quote Did anybody think grand finale was one of the best songs in the game? I like Grand Finale, but I like Overture much better. To me, it's the perfect opening/intro for Aria. It's really a great piece of music that they put together, from Overture, through Aria di Mezzo Carattere, to Grand Finale. It does make me think of the movement style in classical symphonies. Dancing Mad is also that way, but I do think all of the Opera scene's music can rival it. -------------------- |

Quote (Narratorway @ 29th April 2010 21:24) The third tier section of Dancing Mad has been my favorite piece of videogame music ever since I heard it back in '94. Easily the most astounding pieces I've heard from the era. That's the church-style part, right? If so, then I agree. It foreshadows what happens right after, and it really tops off the epic feel. You're on top of the world, at the end of a massive tower, and begin to hear that music, and it's just wonderful. -------------------- |

I personally don't like Dancing Mad. it seemed way too dramatic and wasn't entraining at all.
And before I'm written off as a One-Winged-Angel junkie, my favorite song in the franchise is "Battle with Seymour." -------------------- "When we think there's no hope left, we keep looking until we find some!" - Claire Farron |

Okay... before I go completely crazy and get needlessly angry, let me welcome you to CoN. It's always great to see new members, and I hope you have fun here.... Whaaaaaa? Just kidding, I actually am glad that you said it, at very least to break up the monotony. But I do think that I enjoy it precisely because it is very dramatic. What a perfect way to end a game that offers some of the finest storytelling in video game history. Now, maybe to defend your point, there are other songs that are not as dramatic but are more interesting in the game. Some of them, in particular, aren't some of the more popular songs but give the game character. Also, I must say, I respect the boldness that you've shown on your first day! ![]() -------------------- |

I was revisiting a few old piano transcriptions of mine the other day and had some fun with Dancing Mad part 3.
Great C-sharp major glorious angelic action there I gotta say. I love that part, because it perfectly sets up the third movement. -------------------- |

Thanks for the link, Sherick. That was a very thought-provoking read. I enjoy pretty much all the FF music, but Dancing Mad is, hands down, my favorite piece of video game music ever. And now that I see (or hear, in this case) all the leitmotifs in the various movements, I love it even more. Seems only fitting that the best FF villain also has the best music.
