DVDAF - Owned
Mine is probably seen as not special. It was bigger until i moved out of state (as some movies were of my parents copies for instance), so that is why it stands at 57. |

I'm guessing I have at least 500, but it's hard to count. I probably have much more than that. Not to mention the fact that I have numerous copies of many DVDs, so I probably have 500-700 different discs.

Goodness, I couldn't even begin to count. Guesstimate would be about 200. 4 shelf bookcase full, dvd spinner, dvd tower, and more crammed into another bookcase in the corner.
Edit: That would be by the "Volume". Add about 75-100 to that if you count the individual disks in every tv series/special edition. All original copies. No burned disks here. Honestly, I don't get why people have/need so many. How often do you really watch them all? And if you have so many but don't watch them often, why did you buy them in the first place?
If boxsets count as one DVD, I would say I've probably got about sixty or so. I have a few that I have both on DVD and BR as well. Of those, I probably haven't even had a lot of them in a player in the last year - my Arrested Development and Futurama discs get the most play, and my wife probably watches the Sleepy Hallow BR more than anything else we have. It seems like most of the other stuff we feel like watching at any given time, we either get from Netflix on disc and send it back, or we get it on Netflix streaming and can watch it whenever, wherever without needing a physical disc. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

He's a major movie buff, and so am I, so we own all of the Hitchcock movies, etc. Most of the movies we have are ones that you can't find on demand or they don't play them often on tv. And since he's a big movie fan, he has to watch them in widescreen where sometimes when they play on tv, they'll change the ratio. I probably over-estimated because I have many movies that are copied or recorded, and I didn't count the box sets as just one. So, I'm guessing I have about 3 to 4 hundred. -------------------- |

Quote (Rangers51 @ 23rd July 2010 04:43) Honestly, I don't get why people have/need so many. How often do you really watch them all? And if you have so many but don't watch them often, why did you buy them in the first place? If you'd ever watched a television show you really, really loved that finished its run and compare it to all of the tripe that's on T.V. today, wishing that things could be like they once were, you'd not need to ask this question. It's the historic preservation of an artistically valuable work with total third party independence. No television stations dictating what's up to snuff with the ratings, no online servers toever go down, no possibility of corporate tampering and most importantly no need to worry that someday for whatever reason your media will be gone forever... unless it's scratched. (But that last part is partially why I'm excited about Bluray. The format requires scratch protection, such as a Durabis coating. I still want a C.D. buffer though for my other titles.) Long story short, you might not watch it very often but if you find yourself ever wanting to you can if you own it. That's why I just bought a Star Trek: The Next Generation and some of the earlier Simpsons seasons on DVD. These were amongst the best shows ever made. Alternative answer: There was no other feasibly moral way to watch what you were planning on watching because it's so scarce. Anime is fairly prone to this, most particularly if your only form of payment is tangibly physical green paper. This is why I got Pani Poni Dash, Tsukuyomi Moon Phase, Kiddy Grade, 3/4ths of Reservoir Chronicle Tsubasa, Angelic Layer, Vampire Princess Miyu, Desert Punk, Elfen Lied, Chobits, Ah My Goddess (It says complete collection but I think it's only Season 1), Magical Lyrical Nanoha, Excel Saga, Princess Monoke, Strawberry Panic, Ichigo Mashimaro, Azumanga Daioh, Gunslinger Girl, Chrono Crusade Vol. 1, Noir Vol. 1 and all but one volume of Final Fantasy Unlimited and Steam Detective Vol 1/2. [I'm fairly sure that's not all I own but that should be the lion's share of my DVD collection.] Which brings me back to the above point and another flaw: You can also lose DVDs in a move before even watching them. ![]() Thankfully I hadn't bought too many western titles on DVD, instead opting for second hand VHS renditions for several bucks apiece. This means I hardly spent anything on the few titles I'll want to rebuy like The Godfather or any of the Disney stuff. Not that I'll rebuy everything; I hear about some rather sad corner cuts where they take standard def. and just try to upscale it, instead of properly remastering. My bluray player and/or television can do that, possibly even better, with a DVD player compatible DVD and finding stuff second hand will be cheaper. I can understand why you'd want a massive collection if you are a fanatic and you do enjoy watching the stuff you love on demand, or can't find it anywhere else. It's easy to imagine such a massive list if you've been collecting for years or sharing a collection, like BlitzSage. I must admit I've never had such a strong urge to watch something multiple times that I'd need the DVD immediately available. Especially a TV series. I can't imagine watching Six Feet Under, The Sopranos or Ghost in the Shell more than once, as much as I like them. I don't buy all that much for movies, with the exception of about 20 or so of my absolute favorites. That and the complete series of Stargate SG-1
![]() I usually don't have the time/patience to sit through an entire movie, for whatever reason, so when I feel like watching something I can usually just turn on FX ((has the movies!)) and watch that for a bit. If they don't have something good on, it's usually at least action-filled. -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up! Quote (Rangers51 @ 23rd July 2010 05:43) Honestly, I don't get why people have/need so many. How often do you really watch them all? And if you have so many but don't watch them often, why did you buy them in the first place? I'll give you a few good reasons. First off, tv series is a good chunk of our collection. We own several seasons of The Simpsons, all of the seasons of Futurama, all the Big Bang Theory, and are working on getting the complete Friends collection. If there is nothing on TV, or you just need something in the background while you are busy doing something else (cleaning, cooking, or what ever else) you can just have it the background running. Honestly, our TV series get alot of play, and it is nice to have some variety. Secondly, you ever go shopping at Wal-Mart (or insert your own store here) and walk by a display of $5 movies, and something catches your eye. An old movie you may have liked, or something you've been wanting to see for awhile and haven't been able to find. That is about 20-30 of our DVDs. Sure we may only watch them once or twice, but it's only $5. I won't lose any sleep over having spent that to watch a movie with my wife. Third are movies I really do watch alot. Between my wife and I, we probably have another 20-30 movies we watch once or twice a year. Lastly is just general support for the movie industry. I'd say the same thing about games. Why bother buying a video game, when you can rent (or pirate in some people's cases) a game? How many times are you going to play through a DS Zelda game? If people buy a DVD when it comes out, then the industry will make more. Sure, I could have rented the new Star Trek movie. I've watched it once in theaters, and once since it came out on DVD, and it may sit in my collection for a few years before it gets watched again, but I really enjoyed the movie, and am showing my support for it. Hopefully more get made, or it is turned into a TV series. I'd love either to happen. -------------------- "And that, my liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana-shaped” -Sir Bedevere the Wise |

I would like to back down from my earlier comment, as I'd also discussed privately with Tonepoet before. You guys are right, you all do have valid reasons for having so many, at least valid for you. Most of them I still can't necessarily understand, but that's just me. Even more damning, I just did a quick count - might have missed a few, but in counting both BR and DVD, and each TV season as one, I have 125. That's twice what I actually THOUGHT I had, and I guess that means a good chunk of my initial thought just goes straight out the window.
However, I think the reason my estimate was so far off was exactly the reason I made my initial post. I have 125 and I watch next to none of them more than once every couple years, and I can look at at least half of them that I probably haven't had out of their cases in five years or more. So, really, even I have too many, IMO, which makes it all the more amazing to me that some of you have three times that but don't feel the same way. ![]() One final note - my wife and I also watch and re-watch a LOT of TV, as Fadien mentions. Most of what we do, though, is stuff that is either on TV regularly in syndication (Simpsons, Raymond, Friends, Seinfeld, etc.) or easily available on Netflix instant stream (Office, 30 Rock, Weeds, Arrested Development, etc.) I have purchased some TV DVDs specifically to support the franchise, notably Futurama, but having the same shows available through a few clicks of the Eggbox is something I use a lot more than having to physically deal with the optical media. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Yeah, I think owning the optical media is actually probably more for the reasons of (1) having a physical copy in case my computer breaks in any way, (2) rewarding the creators financially, and (3) being able to pimp it in meatspace.
Especially for those of us with netbooks, it's far more convenient to just have the material in a virtual format, so we can just browse in our hard drives to the avi/mp4/mkv/wmv/whatever file and have it ready for watching. And it's increasingly common for people to combine their computer and TV anyway. (Though perhaps not as common for people to use the same computer for portability around school or work as for home entertainment.) -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. Quote (Glenn Magus Harvey @ 4th August 2010 22:36) (2) rewarding the creators financially That is a major problem in the video game industry right now, but I agree. I also like a physical copy of a movie, because I don't like the idea of not having physical copies, because they can be lost. (even though I just bought a terabyte hard drive, and that probably wouldn't happen. One of the reasons that it's hard to count my movies is that I have many copies of movies.
