Here's something that's quite fun. I Write Like is a calculator that determines which author your writing is closest to. I pasted some in, getting results from Ian Fleming (who I've never read) to Cory Doctorow (who I've never heard of before now).
If anyone fancies trying it out here's the link: http://iwl.me/ -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Me on the Starcraft. |

I put my old, terrible fanfic into the analyzer and it gave me Stephen King, so take THAT, Stephen King.

Pretty neat, but I would like to know how they coming up with this.
Just for s&g's I put my own fanfics in got Edgar Allen Poe (for Afterstorm) and Dan Brown (for the prequel). Huh... Also rated my senior research paper as HP Lovecraft. That is completely awesome, but I don't know where it came from. I also got Cory Doctorow based on combining three news posts that I have written in the last month. I don't really write enough otherwise to put together a sample.

I got L. Frank Baum for a story I've been writing for a game I might make.
I got Cory Doctorow three times; for fan-fiction, a regular short story, and some homework. -------------------- |

My spin-off Thundercats fanfic resulted in Cory Doctorow.
My post-game FFVI fanfic (in the site submissions forum) got Edgar Allan Poe. These results were gathered using only the latest chapter of each fanfic. |

Quote typing "I will shotgun-f*** you until you die, you lying taco-vacuum." means i write like Ernest Hemingway. cool beans. LOL I wonder if this thing takes errors and slang into account. Try words from another language and see what comes up... On that note I typed in a line from one of my fanfic's OC, a line riddled with grammar errors. "I here from Coporal order. Oops that I'm did no realize you fall." When I asked for analysis on this wonderful piece articulation, I got Stephanie Meyer. ![]() This post has been edited by Frozen_Aura on 19th July 2010 03:29 |

I posted an email I wrote to a friend and got James Joyce. This is cool and all, but I think it must be random. I decided to try again, drawing a goldfish out of e's and 2's, and got William Shakespeare. <-<

That is completely awesome, but I don't know where it came from. I probably should've added a bit more. There's a post that explains it. Quote Actually, the algorithm is not a rocket science, and you can find it on every computer today. It’s a Bayesian classifier, which is widely used to fight spam on the Internet. Take for example the “Mark as spam” button in Gmail or Outlook. When you receive a message that you think is spam, you click this button, and the internal database gets trained to recognize future messages similar to this one as spam. This is basically how “I Write Like” works on my side: I feed it with “Frankenstein” and tell it, “This is Mary Shelley. Recognize works similar to this as Mary Shelley.” Of course, the algorithm is slightly different from the one used to detect spam, because it takes into account more stylistic features of the text, such as the number of words in sentences, the number of commas, semicolons, and whether the sentence is a direct speech or a quotation. Either that or a Cory Doctorow publicity generating Bayesian algorithm that detects writing and produces Cory Doctorow. Using various bits of text I have written, I got: James Joyce, H.P Lovecraft (twice), Arthur C. Clarke, David Foster Wallace, H. G. Wells, and J. K. Rowling.
I'm thinking it picks up on keywords and then maybe a basic grammar/spell check or vice versa. -------------------- "Only the dead have seen the end of their quotes being misattributed to Plato." -George Santayana "The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here..." -Abraham Lincoln, prior to the discovery of Irony. |

" Ek wil nou 'n hond wat blaf he. Dit moet baie gelukig wees."
This both badly spelt and in Afrikaans which only two countries in the world speak. Apparently James Joyce is either South African or Namibian and badly versed in Afrikaans. Also it isn't random because just inputting the same line of text gets you the same answer 3 times in a row. "I am tomorrow, or some future day, what I establish today. I am today what I established yesterday or some previous day." Also James Joyce writes like Vladmir Nabokov which sort of explains the Afrikaans thing since both cultures are stereotypically Large Angry Men who shoot things and Very Sexy Ladies who may or may not be for sale "1/2 ab sinC 1/2 (12)(12) sin80=70.9" The William Shakespeare Quote no one ever knew about. I should probably give this thing a rest now but one last one shouldn't hurt anyone. "qaz wsx edcv rfv tgb yhn ujm ik ol p qwertyuiop asdfghjkl zxcvbnm" Stephen King at his finest! I love this thing! Well, R8.50 Mango, its problem is partly that it doesn't have a None of the Above option that works competently.
After all, how would you do that? Also, it might be nicer if it did a sort of "X% like [writer]" score, than just giving you a score. In other news, Shakespeare was a secret mathematical genius. ~~~~ By the way: Similarly useless but amusing tool: http://bookblog.net/gender/genie.php This post has been edited by Glenn Magus Harvey on 24th August 2010 19:32 -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. Just tried that Gender Genie tool, using an excerpt from the same story that yielded the Salinger result. Even though my narrator is a man, it still figured out that I'm female. (I did have a fairly high masculine percentage, but the feminine was just a little higher and won out.) Apparently, words like if, when, and should are "feminine," and words like above, below, and around are "masculine." Who knew?
![]() On a different note, I pasted a passage from a different story on I Write Like.... and got Chuck Palahniuk. I guess that's to be expected, since this story had a different narrator. Still thought it was a cool result, though. |
