For me it has to be the characters. Sabin is hands-down the coolest Final Fantasy character with the muscles to back it up.

Many people don't think as I do, but what I liked the most was the combat system. ATB THAT DOESN'T STOP WHEN YOU USE BIO? Count me in.
No one else seemed to like it, though. -------------------- Snooping as usual, I see? |

I liked the story. The way that it's told reminds me of fantasy novels, in which it tells everyones background and origin. It makes me think very deeply.

I loved both the character AND the story, but the Kefka answer won out. He is by far the craziest villain I have ever seen, and I love me a little crazy.
What I really liked about the characters was how each one had a back-story that added to their personal strength, as well as the strength of the party. -------------------- "My name is Atma...I am a power both ancient and unrivaled... The story is one of the most epic in video game history, so I voted for that, but the characters are a part of that in my opinion. But if I have to choose, it is the events that the characters take place in that are amazing.

FF6 definately wins a award for character developemetnt background and story.
Definately i would vote final fantasy 6 the best final fantasy that i have played. I haven't played ff12 yet but, maybe i will some day. I hope its difers from the final fantasy wich the characters seem to be lacking with the new ones or something else. although i got little faith in squaresoft after hearing about vaan and some of the characters of final fantasy 12 being the worse characters. -------------------- We are stardust. Our bodies are made from the guts of exploding stars. I'm currently playing through that for the first time, and I have enjoyed the characters, especially Balthier. But they are not as fleshed out as FFVI's characters were. I am really conflicted about my answer. I often think that story= plot + setting + characters, so I chose plot. But I don't know, I think that the cast stands out above all other casts in the series. -------------------- |

No one else seemed to like it, though. I liked the gameplay too. Besides the ATB system, it's the middle point between FFIV's static classes and FFV's custom ones. You have freedom with your team but the characters don't lose individuality. While I like Kefka, I don't think he is that much creative, maybe in FF standards. He makes me laugh and he does his job as a villain, but he alone doesn't carry the game for me. [Besides I'm getting tired of the claims that FFVI is great because it has Kefka!, come on, it is much more than that.] The story. I'll be frank, the story in the WOB was fine but it was too much of the same old, same old (evil empire vs. rebels, half-breeds, hidden magical places...). Fortunately there's a solid turning point at the Floating Continent and then comes the WOR, which I personally liked better, even if there was barely any story. The characters. My pick for the poll. Largest cast on a main FF to date, and while some of them are fodder * coughUmarocough * the quantity doesn't take away from the quality. They are the soul of the game. It is hard not to get attached to at least one of them. Hey, what about the music? I think it's one of the strongest points of the game. -------------------- "Love, and do what you will" Saint Augustine |

Ahh i should have put music as well. The character themes are awesome and the music usually fit the situations at hand very well ex.(spoilers) when Kefka is turning the Espers in Thamasa

Yes FF12 isn't very character-drive. Really it isn't very plot-driven neither. The only characters that are fleshed out are Ashe and Balthier. Even the main character, Vaan, gets pretty static. Still, the game is frickin amazing. It doesn't matter so much that the story is kinda weak because the best aspects of the game don't revolve around the main story. I digress. This is a hard poll, but I'd have to go with story no doubt. That is the one thing that keeps me saying "Final Fantasy VI is the greatest game of all time, hands down." But of course, the story is absurdly character-driven, so its hard to seperate the two. Not only does it have the largest cast of any rpg, but all the key characters are completely fleshed out, 3-dimensional beings with their own histories and backstories. Its almost like a novel, quite honestly. Which is why FFVI is the only thing I'd ever want to fanfic And the music is second to none. In any FF, any RPG, any game, and most movies. I can literally spend hours writing drum compositions for those tunes. And Kefka is without a doubt the best video game villain ever conceived. I'd put him up with the Joker and Darth Vader even. -------------------- I fear my heart and fear my soul Life goes on, it surely will, Without me and I wonder: Will I ever see light again? I personally would call Shadow the best FF character of all time. Not only because he is cool, but his story is so emotional yet enigmatic. -------------------- |

Characters. Probably the best ensemble cast of playable characters, and one of the most well developed casts, as well.
As much as I liked the plot (it reminded me of Star Wars), I think some later FFs have surpassed it. This post has been edited by Tmlavos on 2nd September 2009 23:05 -------------------- In my Opinion of Course, -Lavos |

I think this is sorta a tough question because characters and story are so interconnected. FFVI has a great story, and it has the best cast of characters in a FF game. Really, the different characters and the degree to which they were developed is the best that I've ever seen. (Even though we've already heard that). I did like the large number of espers too. I hope the next FF's bring back a large number of the good ol' espers.

There are so many endearing qualities that this game possesses that I can hardly choose any one. When I purchased it from my friend, I leafed through the manual and noticed that the graphics totally blew IV(pretty much my only gauge by which to measure FF games at the time) away.
It only got better from there. The music, the characters, the plot, Kefka, the steampunk setting, It had its funny parts as well as some pretty touching moments. In short, I find it to be a package deal. Everything it did, it almost overdid (in a good way) and they worked together to create a gaming experience that I never experience before or since. And for that it will always be my favorite Final Fantasy and second favorite game (Fallout 2 wins the first place trophy, but it's really a close call) -------------------- No matter how hard I try, I just can't get worried about it! |

NOW? I've played the game enough to have out-enjoyed everything about it. Not only was everything I saw well-done, but it was also part of my memory. Now I play it, not only because to me it has great replay value, but because of its familiarity. I like to rewatch movies and reread good books because it's something I know will bring a smile to me at all the right moments, and something I know, however sharply the plot turns, I will know the turn that takes it back on track, if ever that turn occurs.
I like being able to go up to this young lady in the bar (in FFVI) and know that she's going to snap at me for thinking she's too young looking. I want to watch as an entire world is torn apart, knowing it will (if I let it) be brought back together. It's almost like when you ask a redundant question to an old friend. You enjoy hearing the same response, like an inside joke. -------------------- You're telling me that there's no hope. I'm telling you you're wrong. |

What initially put me off were the graphics. Now I love them as the most old school graphics of any game I own!
Story was brilliant. Charactors were stunning, amusing and intriguing. Villain was actually a lunatic. Score almost unparalleled in my opinion, as good as VII. Combat system I loved aswell. Oh, what did I enjoy 'the most'? The charactors, charactor relationships and the story. Here's to my first post in about 3 months! |
