Check this out guys. It's not exactly a trailer, more like a snippet or actual scene from the movie. Looks legit and extremely dark.......what do you think?

It hasn't been confirmed if this 'trailer' is for the upcoming movie or if it is for the next game in the series, which was slated to be a "darker and grittier" take on the franchise. Regardless of what it turns out to be, I'm absolutely in love with the direction it is going. That split second flash of Sub-Zero gave me more chills than the rest of the snippet, oddly enough.
And, hilariously, Johnny Cage bites the dust yet again. I feel bad for the poor character, he's doomed to death in each and every incarnation. Edit Jeri Ryan, the actress who played Sonya Blade in the short, commented on the supposed trailer. It seems to not be a trailer at all, for a game or for a film. It's actually a pitch thrown together for the WB on what could potentially be a re-imagined concept for the film, be it a movie or a series. I'm really disappointed by this, but I can only hope someone over at the WB pounces on the potential here and the real work can get started. Oh really? It's not a trailer, that's a shame. I also really like the line they're running with here. It looks very similar to the Saw films and Se7en, but more of an enjoyable watch than a thrilling or horrifying one. Who knows what would happen if a studio takes them up on this.

Looks like someone is about to go Nolan on the franchise. Can't say I'm not a little irked by messing with one of my favorite franchise storylines, but this looks very creative, and very intruiging. Hope they pick this up, it'll probably turn out better than that Devestation they were planning.

It is interesting. The changes to the story are what really pull me in. I'm really curios how it will turn out, but I won't lie, I pretty much think that it's blatantly stupid to release a trailer before anyone even knows what it's for...

Poor Johnny Cage.
I like the direction they took it; hopefully something more will come out of it. |

Performance wise...it's about on par with the original movies to be honest, but it would be the appropriate direction to revamp the franchise.
The one big issue I had was with Baraka. It's a cool concept and all, but there's large leaps in logic for that dude, such as why would a professional surgeon 1) know kung-fu and 2) bounce around on all fours and growl at intruders. You need to take almost a decades worth of University level education to get a Doctorate and I'm fairly certain it's even more if you're a surgeon. The dude knows latin and he's baring his teeth at people! The Official Youtube link (HD) This post has been edited by Narratorway on 11th June 2010 03:45 -------------------- |

I hope it's not a new movie. Video game movies usually end up in failure. The original Mortal Kombat movie was okay, but let's just leave it at that please ?? Please please please ? -------------------- Currently playing Chrono Trigger !! Currently looking forward to Don't Know. |

I remember seeing in GamePro during the mid 90s a fake advertisement for a Mortal Kombat movie.

Whether or not it's a promotional video for a movie the next game, it looks like yet another random generic action movie with some famous franchise name randomly slapped onto it as opposed to anything Mortal Kombat. It's not a desolate enough setting and the background stories don't really match what I know about the characters, albeit I must admit that's very little.
The portion given doesn't make much sense when concerning the events surrounding Mortal Kombat 3. I don't know how that could happen without anybody noticing something weird. I mean part of the game's premise was that everybody had their souls stolen. Although to be fair, that sort of thing is handwaved all the time and I suppose it could be a blackout and/or group amnesia. Regardless, so long as we're speaking of Mortal Kombat 3, if you're going to use a cop, wouldn't it make more sense to use Stryker? Also Reptile looks more like Baraka should than Baraka himself. Reptile should have an actual lizard's head when and if unmasked, as he's not even human at all. I do believe he was stated to be very cautious about blowing the disguise. I'm not exactly sure why so correct me if I'm wrong but I think it was largely a manner of vanity? [By the way, these links may contain Mortal Kombat II spoilers.] Don't get me wrong now, I'm not much of a Mortal Kombat fan. I'm just curious why people want to make a movie, assuming it is one, based off an I.P. if they weren't going to use many of its elements. I mean yeah, it draws a crowd but do such movies really provide what that crowd is looking for? If you're looking to use an I.P. and don't use significant portions of it, it suggests to me two things:
I'm not saying it can't be any good but I would suggest that it's unlikely to be great as a movie. If it's the next installment, something I doubt due to these inconsistencies and the fact that the games weren't exactly story driven enough for this trailer to be very compelling, what happened to all of the other ones? Quote (Tonepoet @ 12th June 2010 14:12) Wall of Text It's meant to be a reboot of the series, via a different imagining of the scenarios and settings that the 'Mortal Kombat' world takes place in. They aren't attempting to re-create the atmosphere of the games, but rather, take a very Nolan approach by adding a degree of realism to the characters and tournament. So, no lizard men or undead-skeleton soldiers, instead you have harlequin babies and mentally unbalanced surgeons. Personally, I think this formula would make the series a bit easier to translate into a film and grants potential to really play with the characters, who have never really had any solid development other than "they fight in the tournament. Oh and Sub-zero and Scorpion hate each other, guys." The fans of this series have gotten movies that tried to channel it's respective games, and as any can point out, Mortal Kombat and Annihilation were probably some of the worst pieces of film ever created. It just doesn't work. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

I don't know how I feel about this...
And Scorpion as the.. protagonist? As a Sub-Zero guy I'm not sure how to react to this. And with Johnny Cage dead, will they introduce other characters from the MK universe? It does seem like a meeting of MK and Saw. I get what it's trying to do, but I think I prefer the good old Mortal Kombat plotlines/bios. -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up! They wont be 'introducing' anything. 2) I never thought'd I'd see anyone who would prefer the old movies or put the word 'good' within miles of the descriptions of their plotlines. Eeeh, that'd make a little more sense but I dunno. I'm not a big fan of retcon to begin with. Sometimes a reimagining can work but in this case, I'd argue that Mortal Kombat has sooo little story to begin with that further stripping down its elements turns it into nothing in particular. Taking the supernaturally hellish warriors from Mortal Kombat is like taking the Pokemon out of Pokemon. The core point is lost.
Well I guess that's not entirely true since the true core point to Mortal Kombat is and always will be the, erm, Kombat. That's nothing too special in and of itself though, since almost every action flick has fighting. It wouldn't be any worse off with any other cast. In fact, while it still may be a little spotty, with a little retweaking the overall tonality of this piece seems like it'd fit Street Fighter a lot better since the setting is a lot closer to begin with. Rewatch that vid with this casting in mind: Baraka = Vega Capt. Briggs = Guile Sonya = Chun Li Tsang-Tsu = Bison Reptile = Blanka Scorpion = Sagat Sub-Zero = Ryu Sub-Zero's Brother = Ken Johnny Cage = Dan Considering the close rivalry between the two franchises, perhaps that's how it was originally envisioned and not being able to secure the appropriate license, they did the next best thing? Also to Narratorway's comment: uh... This post has been edited by Tonepoet on 15th June 2010 08:02 -------------------- |

I think you're looking at it wrong. It's working off an idea that a lot of people enjoy, and then removing the supernatural. Think of it as that King Arthur movie with Clive Owen. They're not retconning anything. In fact, it has no bearing on the official "con," ret or otherwise. The point, it seems, is to ground it, creating a very different, and likely stand-alone, construct paying homage to a popular franchise/continuity. Whatever else may be it's pros and cons, I believe it is at the very least an interesting idea. I didn't really like King Arthur, though; take it as you will.
