Quote (Glenn Magus Harvey @ 2nd August 2010 23:41) @ El Panachino: Blame the needless glorification of swords in fantasy settings. Well it's not even that. There are plenty of FF weapons that are not swords, the TC just listed mostly swords. In FF7 alone (since most of the examples from the original post are from FF7), you have spears (Cid), staffs (Aeris), gloves/claws (Tifa), throwing weapons (Yuffie), and unorthodox things like combs (Nanaki) and a big stuffed moogle (Cait Sith). I just thought it was odd that the question listed swords as three out of six options, with the only other options being guns, magic, and "etc." What about pole weapons (staffs, spears), soft weapons (whips, nunchaku, and the like), non-gun ranged weapons (bows, crossbows, throwing weapons), axes, maces, knives, etc? -------------------- Wha? Thanks to me? |

Main characters tend to be sword-wielders for some reason. Between Crono, Cecil, Terra's starting equipment IIRC, Cloud, Lightning, and Fighter being listed first, this seems to be a pretty consistent phenomenon, enough for it to be a trope on TV Tropes.
So yeah, the series definitely highlights swords. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. You can find me on the Fediverse! I use Mastodon, where I am @[email protected] ( https://sakurajima.moe/@glennmagusharvey ) |
