I was curious about something.

i downloaded the japanese version of ff6 and since i cannot understand japanese i was wondering if there are any noticeable differences?

I know that some languages when translated it can be a bit iffy due to translations not being exact and or the meaning is slightly different in the other language and it can be harder to explain in another language.

(PS- it's a really really good translation because it notes differences in the games and there are too many to count)

Very interesting translations.

And i'm not a kid.

I've always thought that Locke's main interest was really celes, and before that rachel.

He seems to create a deeper relationship with her than with terra.

Then again, its pretty blatantly obvious that the one who flirts with terra is edgar, then again, edgar flirts with all girls.

Remember that scene where she is warned about edgars reputation in figaro castle?

It's really a shame i don't speak japanese.

While i do like woolsey translations, there are some things that do seem like improvements on the game.

And some of these gramatical things do seem like literally untranslateable.

Well, more than likely, you're not missing too much. Whether he says Son of a Submariner/Sandworm/...or anything else, it doesn't change the point: Kefka is angry.

Some things may be lost in translation, but for the most part, you're getting the same story.

But i heard that they make edgar seem smarter than he already is.

But,i can't understand japanese so not much i can do.

I actually liked some of the woolsey stuff.

like:Son of a submariner is pretty funny.

It does have its obvious flaws like:in the boat to go to the village of the blue mages:

There is a scene where locke is doing something weird on the boat, and in the remade version on the gba, they fixed the dialogue so it made more sense because it made no sense whatsoever.

Some of the fixes were nice, but i miss some of the old scripts.

Well, in the English GBA remake, they made Sabin seem just completely stupid rather than just brash and a bit immature. I'm not saying it isn't important, but it's not like it's a completely different game. At the very least the core story is still the same.

And like you, I enjoy what Woolsey did with the script. He added a quirky factor that might be missing from the Japanese version.

Yeah, I was kidding. tongue.gif

I always find translation interesting. A few word changes can make a big difference in video game dialogue, and I'm a fan of learning the little details about the characters that translation could miss.

But I will forever have a soft spot for the woosely translation even if there are flaws because that's the first one I've ever played.

I would 9 times out of 10 rather have a very faithful translation, where the only changes are slight changes for cultural reasons. I want to get the same thing that was intended.

That being said, for most people translation is fine, especially if they do a good job.

As for the GBA translation, while it corrects several inaccuracies from the earlier translation, it has other ones that are just as annoying. Celestriads...which has been localized as Three Stars for a long time, and it means the same thing. WTF>
