Shame about Korea. They really picked it up in the second half and the scoreline flattered Argentina.
Messi continues to play wonderfully but he must be suffering from a major case of blue balls by now. -------------------- SPEKKIO: "GRRR...That was most embarrassing!" |

The more I see Mexico the more I like them. I especially like Carlos Salcido and at half-time he is the best player on the pitch IMO. If Salcido makes a big club move after this WC I wouldn't be surprised in the least. He's only 30, still with about 6 or 7 years of quality football in him. He was linked with Arsenal apparently after 2006; Wenger's in the stadium commentating, and he needs defenders so maybe he'll pick him up.
PN1 we seem to really be watching different games. ![]() 1-0, it's these Man U strikers old and new isn't it? Well done Mexico in the end! The commentator quite rightly said the Irish will be cheering that result. I was thinking, this French WC campaign would make a brilliant film along the lines of The Damned United. It's got everything. Gourcuff is held back from playing because the older players are jealous of his looks and abliity, allegedly. The coach and the players don't get on at all. The country and the French media slate them. Franck Ribery didn't want to move from his usual position to make way for Malouda, and then he played in the centre which isn't even his favoured position anyway. Henry is one of their best attacking threats but he didn't come on probably because of some falling out or other. It would make brilliant entertainment. If I had to choose someone to win out of two teams I can't stand, I guess it would have been Mexico. Let's go South Africa next week - score four or five and send them both home.
Here are the scores today:

Slovenia's national anthem is the most positive song I've heard since John Lennon's Imagine.
Quote God's blessing on all nations, Who long and work for that bright day, When o'er earth's habitation No war, no strife shall hold its sway; Who long to see That all man free No more shall foes, but neighbours be. Who long to see That all man free No more shall foes, but . . . No more shall foes, but neighbours be. Our anthem is about winning a battle against the English about 800 years ago. Other than Brazil, the games today have all the teams I care about playing. I hope Germany deliver another amazing performance, although I think Serbia will give them more trouble than Australia. I think Slovenia will beat the US because their team has a rock solid defence, conceding very few goals in qualifying and ending with +14 GD. I can't see Algeria getting any goals against England. PS: Nobody picked the Netherlands to win the whole thing? Interesting. The Netherlands are well known for being some of the biggest choke artists in the Cup in history. They always have the talent to win but never do anything with it. The same would be said for Spain, and probably will be again after this Cup - I think several people chose Spain based on the strength of their European win in 2008. That squad is mostly intact but now has Jesus Navas, but as we saw Wednesday, that doesn't necessarily help. Edit You know, I don't think I can watch this. I think I might have to go run some errands instead so as to not have my entire day ruined. Quote (sweetdude @ 17th June 2010 14:25) PN1 we seem to really be watching different games. ![]() Of course he played better against Nigeria, but Messi played wonderfully relative to just about everyone else on the pitch, although Tevez had a strong game and lost the ball surprisingly little. Gotta frame it in relative terms: you were the one who said that the US defense was relatively good against England due to your extremely low expectations, although we all know that they were, absolutely speaking, complete dogsh*t. ![]() Slovenia/US was such a tense game. We got robbed at the end (we get a foul called on us and a winning goal disallowed after the whole Slovenian team grabs onto our jerseys), although in fairness the ref was consistent--consistently AWFUL. No I was robbed at the end there by the Slovenian keeper. Not only did he make a complete mess of Donovan's goal but he really should've done better with the second as well. Both went just over his head. I understand goals going past his feet, but surely not just above his head, where he can easily have moved his arms. It was a shame because he made some quality saves in the first half.
I put down the score to be 2-1 Slovenia. That's another potential 4 points reduced to 1. I'm just not having any luck in the last few days. I hope Slovenia can get a point out of England. Outside of CoN that game was really enjoyable to watch as a neutral. The US made such a great comeback. As a Celtic fan I obviously couldn't like Edu when he came on (Rangers player) but the others really sorted themselves out in the second half, especially Donovan. Edit Damn I wanted to change first scorer from Rooney to Heskey after my girlfriend said he'll score, but I'm too late. As soon as she said that I'm certain that's what's going to happen. ![]() This post has been edited by sweetdude on 18th June 2010 18:30 -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. That was a robbery, plain and simple. The US should be in the lead of the group.
And England, what the hell. You know it's bad when even Scots are pondering what's wrong and not finding it funny. This is just tragic, guys. Ouch Italy. I thought that NZ would do something amazing in order to match up to the Australian game, but against Italy I only predicted that they would get that one goal. Next time I'm going to be more adventurous. Great game by Ryan Nelson and 17 year old Chris Wood when he came off the bench. I'm looking forward to seeing Wood playing in the Premier League for West Brom.
Italy need to work on their attack. They've still got a team that could win the cup, but like a vast majority of teams they play too many crosses with little or no aerial threat in the box. Luca Toni would be useful if he wasn't deselected. When Pirlo's back things might improve, but for now the main direction of Italy's attack should be shots into the scrum of players. Every time they did that there was a chance, and very nearly a goal on a few occasions. I don't think there was a single cross that was of major concern to the keeper. Italy don't have as much to worry about as France or England at least. ![]() Edit Oh man! ![]() This post has been edited by sweetdude on 20th June 2010 21:24 -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. I think I predicted a Portugal win 2:0. No one seriously thought the DPRK would win.. Did they?
I caught the end of the game. Came in when it was 5:0 and my dad started joking about all the NK soccer players facing a firing squad when they get home. Haha! We were thinking the same thing too, seriously, it's a bit of a shame. The North Koreans got 15,000 tickets but only a handfull of trusty people were allowed access to leave the country. Did anyone see the North Korean player celebrating when he missed the shot? I wonder if he was told to celebrate so the NK media could cut the video and make it look like they beat Portugal. Similar things have happened. I put 3-0 Spain! That second half was unbelievable. The Spanish should've been at least 8-0 up if they'd had the same desire to score as the Portugese. That's another potential 5 points reduced to 3, hah. ![]() -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Me on the Starcraft. |

Very lackadaisical play after that second goal, particularly by Villa, and Torres is just simply not on form yet. They won, and you know, they might just come in second in the group for not having scored more today (Neal, Jav and I also took them at 3-0, for what it's worth). Really, though, does it matter too much how you come out of Spain's group, as long as you come out? The round of 16 will put them against either Portugal or Brazil, and we don't know which yet. Either is bad, based on what we've seen so far. Here are today's scores. Sephiroth got the first perfect of the competition, and it certainly gave him a big old bump in the leaderboard.

They look infallible. Portugal aren't brilliant, as we've seen from their lacklustre qualifiers and the Ivory Coast game. Also don't rule out Brazil giving Portugal an absolute goal battering and the Ivory Coast picking up a lot of goals against North Korea. It's still possible that the IC could make it through. Apparently being an African team doesn't do you any favours in this cup, however. And David Villa could've WON the Golden Boot in that game. Sweetdude, the 'North Korean fans' are actually Chinese who are hired to play the part. No joke.. KJI doesn't casually let people out, no matter how loyal they are.
http://m.deadspin.com/5564578/north-korean...nese-volunteers I didn't see the whole game, so I didn't catch the celebrating Korean you were talking about, but it is exactly the type of stuff they would do. I'm reading my second North Korean propoghanda book, written by Kim Il Sung, right now. You couldn't believe the level of nonsense these people are willing to go to in order to brainwash the people, so you're probably right about him being told to celebrate so that they can edit the clip to look like a win for the DPRK media. Neal I think picking Argentina is a great idea. I can't believe only one person picked them. They're now a lot of commentator's favourite to win, or certainly just behind Brazil. They don't have to meet Brazil until the final either, which I'm really happy about because they could've been the team to sink them. I was close to picking Italy or France as 'safe' teams to get points even if they didn't win the cup in the end. Glad I didn't now!

I'm loving this World Cup, and I must say that part that feeling stems from the predictor app--even though I completely spaced out and failed to enter predictions for some 20+ matches.
I would be watching it anyway, what with World Cup Fever striking me ever 4 years, but since I no longer live within 800 miles of any of my fellow football fan-friends, it's great to have the community here. ![]() This post has been edited by Kane on 22nd June 2010 17:19 |

Might have to move my office TV into the living room for tomorrow. ![]() Neal: I won't out those players just yet, perhaps after the first round is said and done. Heck, based on the numbers I posted before, those who picked the French probably won't be the last ones to pick a traditional power team and still get zero bonus points. Italy and Spain are in danger, and Germany needs to make sure they score some goals, even if they draw. Serbia routing Australia and a German draw could make things a bit scary for them. In fact, even the brave soul who took the US could find themselves in a world of hurt, now that Jozy is apparently sick. With Findley out for having two yellows, we might be seeing Edson Buddle and Herculez Gomez starting tomorrow for the American offense - the former with no play time so far this Cup and the latter on only as a sub so far. Not many points in the first two matches today, we'll see what the second ones do. It seems that the leaderboard is finally starting to get the tiniest bit of separation. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |
