So, now that the Cup is over, I'm back to watching TV with my wife. We flipped past Forrest Gump, and went back to it as we started discussing what a good American movie it is. So we went to IMDB to see where it was sitting on their top 250 right now (#37, actually). And it got me to thinking, how many of the current top 250 have I seen?
And that made me think, how many of the top 250 (or 100, or 50) have YOU seen? Which one have you not seen that you would most like to? For me, the answers are 106 of the 250, and probably A Clockwork Orange. Don't know why I haven't gotten around to seeing it ever. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Alright, this might take me a while...be back after I'm done counting.
Well, that wasn't so bad. I've seen 122 of the list. Out of the ones I haven't seen, I'd like to see a few, probably La Strada is the one I've been most interested in. -------------------- "If art doesn't risk upsetting expectations and challenging its audience, it can only stagnate." |

Have you seen any other of Kubrick's movies? Like Strangelove and 2001? He's one of my favorite directors. 114, I'm surprised that I've seen that many. Toy Story 3 is the only one I haven't seen in the first 17. This post has been edited by BlitzSage on 12th July 2010 03:46 -------------------- |

I've only seen 73 of them. I've been meaning to finally see both The Big Lebowski and There Will Be Blood (both of which I've had more-or-less solid plans to watch that fell through at the last moment).

194. The only ones in the top 50 I haven't seen are City of God and Paths of Glory. Most of the ones I haven't seen seem to be in the neighborhood of 50-150, it seems....
I saw Toy Story 3 last weekend. It was excellent, but not my favorite Pixar movie. Give it a few months and it'll settle lower on the list. -------------------- |

I actually made a considerable push to watch more of the top 250 about 6 months ago. I've seen 105 at this point, but it was closer to 75 back then.
The one on the list I've been most interested in seeing is Once Upon a Time in the West, but my friend told me to finish the 'Dollars' trilogy before moving onto other spaghetti westerns. I've seen Fistful and The Good the Bad and the Ugly, but have yet to check out A Few Dollars More. I haven't seen as many of the top 50 as I'd like, though. Only seen 21 of them. -------------------- "We're not tools of the government or anyone else. All four movies are completely separate from one another - For a Few Dollars More actually has Lee Van Cleef portray a different character than he does in The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, which definitely confused me since I thought they were a trilogy taking place in the same "universe." And for my money, Once Upon a Time in the West is the second-best of all the spaghetti westerns, behind only TGTBaTU. Leone wanted it to be his last one, so he took everything he had left and threw it on, and used connections to get his favorite actor (Henry Fonda) to play the villain. No need to wait for For a Few Dollars More. -------------------- |

I've not seen 79 of them. There's only a few of those pre-1970 that I have seen. I've tried to watch them but failed. Out of that top 250 list I would like to see The Diving Bell and the Butterfly the most, and I'm glad this topic reminded me of it!

I've only seen 69 of the movies on the list, and that's with a very tentative yes to "The Thing", which I'm pretty sure I've seen, but recall it being extremely campy and not at all worthy of inclusion on any top 250 list unless it was for the 250 best-worst B-Movies. The movies I would most like to see are The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West, both for musical reasons - first, I love Ennio Morricone's compositions and he did the scores for each movie, and second, one of my favorite pieces of video game music (overworld theme from the original Wild ARMs) has the melody from a song in Good/Bad/Ugly and I'd like to hear it used in the context of the movie.

72, but plenty of names popped out that made me think "Why haven't I see that"? Patton, Spartacus, Letters from Iwo Jima, Network... Some of course I couldn't give a crap about though. Avatar, for example.
I also couldn't help but think Toy Story 3's position is somewhat inflated by hype. It's certainly one that ought to be on there I bet, given Pixar's track record, but not where it is just now. Hype backlash will settle it soon enough ![]() -------------------- "Only the dead have seen the end of their quotes being misattributed to Plato." -George Santayana "The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here..." -Abraham Lincoln, prior to the discovery of Irony. |

From their list, I've seen 211 movies. I used to love taking random titles from this list and putting one of those flicks on any night where I couldn't sleep. (There have been many, many of those.)
To this day, I've never seen Saving Private Ryan and I'm not sure I'll ever really get around to it because it always struck me as one of those movies where the hype outshone the film itself. Besides, I'm not at all a Tom Hanks fan or a Vin Diesel fan. Das Boots, M and the Twilight flicks are some of the other titles on that list that I haven't seen and probably won't ever bother to watch. That being said, I do want to watch the Maltese Falcon and I've yet to see District 9, which I need to fix soon. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

Saving Ryan is pretty good, but if you haven't seen All Quiet on the Western Front yet then I'd recommend that instead, either the old one or the newer one. By the sounds of it you've probably seen it already! ![]() -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Me on the Starcraft. |

No need to wait for For a Few Dollars More. No no -- I understand that. He understands that, too. He just recommended that I watch the most well known spaghetti westerns before moving onto Once Upon a Time in the West, which he considers the best and his favorite. Considering how the Dollars films are all successors it makes sense to me. He also recommended I watch Django first but I skipped past that, and I watched the Dollars movie out of order so I guess I haven't really been taking his word very literally anyways. Speaking of the spaghetti westerns, listen to this.
I love those movies, but for westerns I prefer John Ford movies, such as The Searchers. Quote (sweetdude) I've never liked... Benjamin Button for that matter. Fight Club is a much better film. Se7en is interesting, but Fight Club is Fincher's best film so far. Quote (FallingHeart) Maltese Falcon has been sitting in a folder in my documents since september waiting to be watched. I guess that's another one for my 'to see' list. You ought to see it. Bogart is a great actor. Quote I'm not at all a Tom Hanks fan I completely disagree. I think he's a fine actor. He does a great job in Private Ryan and Road to Perdition and Forrest Gump. There's another low budget film that he was in that you all should check out. It's called Joe Versus the Volcano. It was a failure but has become a cult hit, and I think it's fantastic. It's really philosophical, it was done by the screenwriter of Moonstruck and Doubt, and it's really great to watch. I saw 147 of the 250 movies on that list, and most of the ones I didn't see were old crime drama or mystery/thriller movies, of which I felt there were a surprising number of on that list, and I don't think I'll really ever get around to watching them. Don't get me wrong, I love old movies, but was never into that genre (besides Hitchcock's stuff), and I was suprised there weren't more of the other genres represented as far as old classic movies go.
Considering I've never seen that list, I think I'm pretty happy that I can check so many off of it. Many of them really were great movies, like To Kill a Mockingbird, and Seven Samurai. I'm glad to see so many Hitchcock movies made it on the list too. Charlie Chaplin is also deservingly well-represented. Some of my other favorites weren't on the list, though, such as Gattaca, and Willow. The one I want to see most I suppose would be Gran Torino, but there were close competitors such as M, The Third Man, Rashomon, and The Wrestler. One of these days I've got to see some more of those Clint Eastwood movies too. I loved The Good, Bad and Ugly, but I don't remember seeing Once Upon a Time in the West. And what about those old John Wayne, James Cagney, Jimmy Stewart, etc. westerns? I don't remember seeing many of those on the list. |

Looks like I have the lowest so far... 48. I just don't watch that many movies! I tend to like the older movies personally, because I don't recognize the actors and so I see them only as the characters they portray.
AFI's Top 100 I remember watching the updated versino of this in 2007. It's voted on by a selected group of people, so that makes it a bit more legit (as far as Toy Story 3 being in the top 10). It's definitely more classics-oriented. -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up! Well I can honestly say that all four of those movies are astoundingly good, ones that ANYONE who hasn't seen should see. I remember what FF Coppola said about Kurosawa, "Akira Kurosawa didn't make one masterpiece, or two masterpieces, he made eight masterpieces." And like I always said, Kurosawa didn't direct my favourite movie, but he's easily my favourite director. -------------------- "If art doesn't risk upsetting expectations and challenging its audience, it can only stagnate." |
