It's looks like a good game(BIOWARE!!) But it costs a lot and I was wondering if anyone here has it and if so should I spend R700 on this?
P.S. Is it like the other Bioware games? Icewind Dale, Neverwinter or Baldurs Gate? -------------------- Since I advertise CoN there I think it's only fair that I advertise The Wiki here. |

It's a brilliant game, and probably the title that I've invested the most time in over the last few months since it released. If you enjoyed the Baldur's Gate titles, or generally are a fan of more westernized RPGs, you'll definitely love this game. I'm currently on my third playthrough and still discovering new stuff.
In terms of story, it is impressively detailed and overwhelming immersive. The characters are charming and love-able (or extremely hate-able, in Alistair's case.) and the world design is breath-taking. I'm all for everyone playing this game. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

Huh...Alistair was probably my favorite character, I got quite a few laughs from that guy. To each his own I suppose. I agree with everything else though, this truly is a great game, and definitely worth at least one play through.

This game is great. In fact, I specifically returned to CON for the first time in over a month to see if anyone had posted about it.
The game is freaking HUGE. I've been playing for at least 20 hours and it seems like I'm only a fraction of the way through. Careful attention to detail is paid to the plot and characters and it's easy to immerse yourself in the world and get lost. I could see myself playing it over and over again because there is so much to explore and so many different decisions that affect the outcome of the game. Battle system is a lot like WoW. AI could be a little better but with a little customization you can work things out. There is a lot that you can do in the way of equipment, stats, talent and magic. Battles are challenging and even on "normal" mode I find myself dying a lot. This might end up being my favorite RPG of all time, and is definitely the best I've played in years. Highly recommended. |

You wouldn't want/need to level up that much, because enemies scale wtih you. Yes, get it, it's one of the best games I've ever laid hands on. -------------------- "A little tight, but the price was right" - Locke "Oh, what a Fuddy Duddy" - Relm "..." - Shadow "I'm a General, not some love starved twit" - Celes "Although Edgar showers his attention on the ladies, most are smart enough to pay him no attention. There is a glitch to allow for level 26 on the PC version of this game, but the true level cap is 25 for the main-quest. However, with the Expansion soon to be released, as is often done, the level-cap is being increased, new skills added, not to mention items, locations, enemies and what have you.
Enemies don't respawn, per se, if you clear an area like a town or a camp, they won't come back. However, in some areas, like the Deep Roads, enemies will continuously spawn. It's unnecessary, however, given that the enemies you face are often the same level as you are, so they're formidable and the sheer volume of enemies that present themselves is staggering. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

Quote (R8.50 Mango @ 28th January 2010 08:56) awwwwwwwww man Is it true you can be gay in game!? Nowhere near as powerful, I'm afraid. Even if they level to scale, end-game enemies and bosses will always give you more bang for your buck in terms of AI difficulty, skill sets and basic stats. A dragon at level 25 is still going to be exponentially more difficult to kill than your typical giant rat at the same level. And I'm pretty sure the relationship scenarios have been well documented across the internet. Yes, it is possible for same-sex relationships to exist, even between species such as Elves and Dwarves. That being said, while it's actually done in a way that doesn't feel gratuitous, I can't understand for the life of me why anyone would ever want to have their character be with anyone other than Morrigan, ever. Unless it was for Sandal. I can understand wanting to go gay for Sandal. Enchantment? Oh baby. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

When I first cleared the Korachi Wilds at the beginning of the game I thought to myself "no respawn? That's freaking lame, this game is gonna be boring." How wrong I was. You will be absolutely bombarded with enemies who WILL kill you, and you can breath a sigh of relief that they don't respawn. Plus, as DF mentions, there are certain areas where the enemies do come back. Quote I can't understand for the life of me why anyone would ever want to have their character be with anyone other than Morrigan, ever. LOL. Yeah, I'm a Morrigan fan myself. Her voice actor has such a sexy voice, which really adds to the mystique of the character. Reminds me of an ex-girlfriend of mine. |

*Bump*
So, 72 hours of gameplay later I finally beat this game. I stand by my earlier opinion, that this is one of the best RPGs I've ever played, if not the best. I haven't felt this immersed in a game since Final Fantasy 7. The ending to the game was awesome and, let me tell you, every major choice you make during the course of the game will affect the ending narrative, to such an extent that the possible combination of endings seems incalculable. The degree of player control over story direction is great. Speaking of the story, despite being a bit of a LOTR rehash, it's also highly entertaining, in a world with a very detailed history and great cast of characters. The battle mechanic takes some getting used to, but I was really into it. It plays a bit like World of Warcraft in that you choose a command and then the character executes that command in real time. No turn based battles here. From what I've heard this is also similar to FF12's battle mechanic. Only one character at a time is under player control (at least on console; PC makes multicharacter control a bit easier I've heard), and the others operate on AI that can be heavily customized via a tactics menu. While the AI leaves something to be desired, I had tons of fun customizing my characters' attributes and tactics. There is a lot of strategy required to get through this game. My biggest complaint would be the difficulty disparity. Casual mode is a cakewalk, and the "Normal" setting is freaking impossible. They issued a patch to correct this, and fixed it in Awakening, but now the game seems too easy even on the most difficult setting. Definitely something for Bioware to work out in any sequel. AWAKENING: So, having beat the game I also picked up Awakening. It's fun, and nice that the Dragon Age saga can continue. I'm sure I will replay Origins many times over, given how many possible ways there are to play it, but it was cool to have some brand new content. You can import your character from Origins which is great. Also, there is an item that let's you reallocate your stats FINALLY! I didn't know in the first one that you were limited to two specializations, and was waiting to level up to Arcane Warrior for the longest time only to find out it wasn't possible. It's good to be able to change your settings if you picked a spell/tactic, or assigned experience points to statistics, and later found out that was a bad move. The story so far is meh. There are talking Darkspawn about, and some battle is raging between a force called the Architect and the Mother. That's not really a spoiler, but the basic premise of the game. I don't know much more beyond that because I'm not too far in. But the gameplay is fun, though much easier (see above) and I like a lot of the new specializations, especially Battle Mage. Arcane Warrior + Spirit Healer + Battle Mage = unstoppable. Most people have been complaining about the characters. I REALLY like the new characters, and am not sure what people are complaining about. I think a lot of people just miss the characters from Origins, but they do show up now and again. Possible spoilers: highlight to view So far in my game, Alistair (as king) and Wynne have made cameos, and Oghren joins the party. The game said "an old favorite joins the party" and a lot of people on the Internet are kind of like "Oghren was never one of my favorites." I have to agree. I never really used him in Origins, but that was mostly because I left the Orzammar quest to the end, plus Sten was already my tank so I had no need for Oghren. But, he is a useful character now that Sten is gone, and has taken on my tank role. It does feel nice to be using him since I never really had him in my party during Origins. OK, sorry for the long post. I wanted to provide some info on Awakening for those Origins fans in this thread, and answer the question on this topic with a detailed and resounding YES that any serious RPG fan should get this game. |
