Well, what was called at its launch "the glitchiest system in the world" is living up to its name again, and after making such progress too! Well, I guess we should count ourselves lucky we never had RROD, although if this doesn't get fixed, and soon, it could prove to be a lot worse. PS3's around the world broke down yesterday. I repeat, around the WORLD! This might be one of the largest scale system breakdowns in history. At first, people thought it was a PSN error, until people realized that they could not even play offline single player games! This was further confirmed when systems that had never been connected to the Internet (i.e. debug units) started bugging out as well. Apparently, it seems that there was a problem with the systems internal clock. Sony is hoping to solve it within 24-hours or so. Let's hope so. I was getting close to beating Dragon Age when this happened! |

Well, this paired with the Zune breakdown at the beginning of the year puts the score at 1-1, though this is obviously on a much larger scale and as of now has no easy fix.
Also, I think that the breakdown only applies to PS3 phats but I'm not sure about that. -------------------- "We're not tools of the government or anyone else. Someday Sony will build something that doesn't go wrong. Odds are because it'll be built to explode
Even though I have one of the affected models and I did see the error code when I switched it on, I find this hilarious anyway. I expect my PS3 will be fine though as it went on and off okay, without any games being started. Edit Yes, only the PS3 Lardbucket is affected. The Anorexic is doing fine. seeing as my ps 3 is my main system, im fairly ticked off. PSN for me went down at about 4 p.m. yesterday, and the fact that they still dont have it fixed is slightly troubling.

I count myself as a lucky owner of a PS3 Slim, so I was okay today.

Man, that would've been horrible, to spend all of that money and have it mess up. My 360 is actually messing up a bit with Madden 10, so I can only sympathize with your console troubles.

My condolences to all the PS3 owners who got briefly screwed over by this.

It wasn't a big deal to me. I couldn't play my PS3 for 24 hours, for most of which I was either asleep or at work.
Besides, it gave a break from the monotony of collecting all the feathers in AC2. This post has been edited by BoBear2681 on 2nd March 2010 18:50 |

In the year 2000... IN THE YEAR 2000!!!!
Things will be crappier than any other point in the history of history, SONY and Microsoft will battle it out to see who's products breakdown the most, while the other company will continue outselling them with a less inferior machine... In the year 2000... IN THE YEAR 2000!!!! Caves of Narshe will be overtaken by an alien faction from planet Pookie and eventually the entire galaxy will have to buy everything they need from AmaCoN... Quote What makes leap year so special that it breaks the game? Will this happen again on other recognized leap years due to a buggy implementation of the calender? What's to keep this from happening again in 2014? Is Sony just trying to wait out a bigger issue until the warrantees void and/or the PSN network is no longer officially supported? Who says the PS3s weren't meant to explode or that Sony would be successful at making something that did? Am I the only one wondering why nobody made snarky reference of Y2K?We are aware that the internal clock functionality in the PS3 units other than the slim model, recognized the year 2010 as a leap year. Having the internal clock date change from February 29 to March 1 (both GMT), we have verified that the symptoms are now resolved and that users are able to use their PS3 normally. If the time displayed on the XMB is still incorrect, users are able to adjust time settings manually or via the internet. If we have new information, we will update you through the PlayStation.Blog or PlayStation.com. Find out all of this and more on the next episode of... <Television blips off> -------------------- |

Connection errors to servers that did know the truth, no because the problem involved a day that didn't exist and one would exist in this case on that date, they can quietly slip out an update with the regular updates rather than rush one out, probably nothing unless they update, if they did then they're broken already because they haven't blown up*, and finally pretty much everyone already has made a Y2K joke EG the guy who posted 15 minutes before you. *I joked about Sony making actual exploding things, but odds are they'd wind up being classed as unexploded bombs.... -------------------- "Only the dead have seen the end of their quotes being misattributed to Plato." -George Santayana "The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here..." -Abraham Lincoln, prior to the discovery of Irony. |

Yeah, there were lots of y2k jokes and references on PS3 forums.
I understand that things like this happen sometimes - companies can't foresee everything that's going to go wrong with their products. And occasionally it's going to be something "laughable" like a bug in some hardware's system clock. The thing that gets me is - why did it have to block me from playing (some) no-online single-player games? I saw some vague reference somewhere that it had to do with games that used "dynamic trophies." In other words, not all single-player games, even those with trophies, would be affected. But to me it just seems like a design flaw for something like this to prevent any single-player game from working. Even if my PS3 thinks it's the 51st day of Smarch, I should still be able to play any game I want that doesn't need to login to PSN for gameplay reasons. |
