i bet most of you will give these credits to one of the Final titles
still im wondering what regular visitors of CON think is the best RPG ever

This is actually a very difficult question. I think though that mabye i like radiata stories more than most and also chrono cross.

I would probably pick Phantom Brave (yes I know it is a tactical rpg but it is still so amazing)

I would have to say Chrono Trigger.

Well, when considering this question, it's hard because there's so many damn good RPG's- and not just in the FF series.

Well, within the FF series, or Square in general, you have quite a few options, but oddly enough, I might only pick one Final Fantasy for the greatest RPG ever, and that would be Tactics. Story, battle system, both fantastic and stand alone outside the series.

Outside the main series, Chrono Trigger was the first game that came to mind, and also one of the games I've given this title to in the past. That is, I might consider it the best turn based standard combat sort RPG I've ever played.

Also, Super Mario RPG- Definitely a heavy weight contender in terms of overall fun content to be had from a game. Another one with a great story and somewhat difficult battles and secrets for your average player the first time through. Plus awesome hidden boss. My only problem was I wished it was longer.

While we're mentioning Super Mario RPG, let's throw in Paper Mario even though it wasn't Square-enix at all. That was a game with a LOT of secrets, and I can't recall ever having a bad time playing that game, or feeling upset by the progression of events or the plot. It all went pretty well together, and the mini-games were great too.

If one counts Action-Adventure RPG's, now Zelda comes into play, in which case I point to my favorite of the series- Majoras Mask, which was essentially a game half made of interesting and, your first time through, difficult side-quests.

Then there's the KOTOR I and II which, despite the glitchiness I and super-glitchiness of II, were both great games in terms of story and battles and twinking character stats in a Dungeons and Dragons sort of way.

And this is just to name a few...

Ah! And how could I forget Morrowind, or if you'd prefer (though I don't) Oblivion? The amount of time I spent playing Morrowind was disgusting.

A lot of things from the Shin Megami Tensei series pops in my mind, but my vote would have to go to Persona 2: Innocent Sin with it's creepy plot, brilliant atmosphere, cool characters, combination attacks and wonderful music.

Golden Sun should at least get a little mention for being Golden Sun.

And I got a lot of fun out of Square's Racing Lagoon (The High Speed Driving RPG) for it being a different kind of RPG and being quite a fun racing game at the same time.

Good old CoN

Deus Ex without a shadow of a doubt. The depth of writing and characterisation is just incredible. Every time I play through it I find out something new which fleshes out another part of the world and its history. There's really nothing like it.

well, outside of the ff series i would say chrono trigger than xenogears, but for the ff series i would say 6(3).

Final Fantasy Tactics. Fantastic storyline, tons of customization, and nostalgia to boot.

Honorable mention goes to Shining Force 1, though.

I really adored playing Fallout 2. I think it's one of the best put together RPGs, and a true RPG almost in full sense of the word.

A close runner up would be Chrono Trigger, followed by Final Fantasy Tactics and Front Mission 4. Completing the top five...? Hmm... As of now, I'd have to go with Oblivion. A solid, very pretty, game over all, though lacking in the story the prior 4 carry over it.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Pokémon yet.
Put in my vote for Pokémon. The level of customization (especially as long as you're not a hardcore, IV- & EV-training, "Stop Having Fun Guys" gamer) is practically endless.
Specific generations and versions are debatable, and largely depend on the individual gamer. I'd say Emerald and Platinum are both near the top, if only for the Battle Frontiers.

Golden Sun and GS: The Lost Age are both fantastic as well. I'm really excited for Golden Sun DS, which comes out New Years Day.

The Mario RPG's are all great, too - I haven't played enough of Legend Of The Seven Stars to really have an opinion, but I love both Paper Mario [the N64 one - haven't played Thousand-Year Door] and M&L: Superstar Saga.

And out of the Finals that I've played, IV (for story), V (for customization), & VI (for, well, everything).


Other Genres:
Some of the Castlevania games, while platformers, could be considered RPG's. I happen to like Aria of Sorrow and Circle of the Moon (both for GBA).

...Although it's a beat-em-up/shoot-em-up, Astro Boy: Omega Factor (also for GBA) has RPG elements to it (and is an excellent game overall at that). I guess the same thing could be said for Zelda II.

And I'm not sure where the Harvest Moon games land in this category (if at all), but I feel they should get a nod simply for being so damn addictive.

I'm waay to partial in this. The Paper Mario (My absolute favourite game) series (at least the first two ones, SPM is awesome but not really a RPG) for the win!

The question I have is, whether you mean the game with the best RPG elements, or which RPG is the best game.

In terms of RPG elements, I believe the Pokemon series does the best job of giving you that RPG sense of adventure and accomplishment.

While probably the most immersive RPG I've ever played is Fallout 3, because it made me feel like I was in that world.

But the best game that happens to be an RPG (though it's the best not just because of its RPG elements) is FFVI. I guess that's an obvious choice, almost too obvious to state. Mainly because the aspects I love about it are not the parts that are RPG parts: the plot, the characterization.

But my personal favorite RPG's are Pokemon Blue and Silver. In those games, you create your own character, and build your own destiny. When I think of RPG's, I really think of those games. Honestly, I don't think of FFVI for some reason as a traditional RPG game like Pokemon is (with no characterization).

Despite what it says in my signature, I really can't make up my mind.
Most of the time, I can say it's between FFX and FFVIII. This would probably switch on a daily basis. I think I've professed my love for these two games enough on CoN already though
Vagrant Story is another game that I would often cite as my favorite. The battle system is different, the customization is cool, and the plot is fantastic. A really beautiful game, in my opinion.

The greatest RPG ever?... I'd say Xenogears for the PSone, but as RPG fans already know it's quite difficult to choose just one game to be given the greatest RPG ever. Some RPGs shine in areas where others don't and there is no RPG that can truly be consider a perfect RPG.

Without a doubt the most influential and the most ground breaking RPG of all times is Final Fantasy 7. I don't care if you love it or hate it, no one can deny the fact that this game launched an entire industry out of it's mind selling like crazy and it helped SONY and Squaresoft to establish themselves as the McDaddies of the industry at the end of the 20th century. FF7 is probably the RPG that comes closest to been the greatest of all times, but that's just an opinion. Games like Xenogears and Chrono Trigger had better story elements and the battle systems were ahead of it's time.

In my opinion,XENOGEARS and maybe Super Mario RPG

Fallout 3 is also another RPG that I consider to be a truly great RPG. The game is so massive I just don't know what to do.

I got it when it came out played it for a whole 4 months with a five day break from the computer and played it for another 2 months. I still play it and I'm not even close to completing it (finished the main quest but not every single sidequest) and even the frequent C2D's shall not deter me from this path!

I vote for 7th Saga, although I don't know why. It might arguably be the worst RPG ever made, but it is definitely my favorite and the only one I can play over and over again without getting bored. Perhaps it is the difficulty. I don't know. What I do know though is that I own four copies of this game (one for SFC, three for SNES), and 8 completed files with every item collected, one of which is the world record speed run.

I am definitely in the minority though; I do not recommend playing this game.

I love the Lufia series, always have, always will. This series was ahead of it's time with the New Game Plus feature (which was also in the first one) and the Ancient Caves. The story line was great too, and although it was full of tropes, it was still strong enough to make me write a third one, without provocation, and go on to design and almost finish it with RPG Maker.

For sandbox styles, I have to go with Daggerfall and the first Fallout. These games made addiction look silly. I mean, there are people who literally needed therapy after playing these titles. The equivalent of digital crack.

For the 'almost tabletop but not quite' category, I have to run with the Diablo series. I mean, come on, who hasn't played Diablo, and who hasn't spent hours just reading the lore?

Also, Tactics Ogre, for being Final Fantasy Tactics before Square bought the Development team, and Breath Of Fire 3, for allowing me to splice together random dragon genes and make a myriad of effects.

And just for fun, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Saints Row 2, Left 4 Dead, and Halo 3. Arguably, all games are RPG's as you, being the player, inherit the role of the character. But that's just semantics, right?

But more seriously, Chrono Trigger, Skies of Arcadia, Dragon Quest VIII, Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy Tactics, Baldur's Gate II, and Deus Ex are answers I like to give to that question. None of them are correct, though, because Super Metroid is the best RPG of all time. If I had to name the most influential, important RPG of all time, it would be World of Warcraft.

Also, Fallout is boring. All of them. I've spent about 30 or 40 hours of my life trying to get into these games and I am always left wishing I had played something else. Please don't tell me I'm the only person that feels this way.

shadow of the colossus always has a place in my book. that game was simply a work of art. although elder scrolls iv was good, and so was fallout 3 since theyre pretty much the same game. demons souls was great, and so far dragon age is pretty good. so i guess i cant really decide other than those, ff ix and the ivalice series (apart from fft a2. that was just awful)

I couldn't agree more. I think even now RPGs are trying to catch up with WoW's commercial and critical success.

As for the Fallout games, I didn't play 1 and didn't really enjoy 2. It just wasn't engaging enough. Maybe I just have a short attention span or something. Basically, yeah it was boring, but the same thing happened with FFT so it's probably just me. I liked 3 a lot from what I played, but not nearly enough to put it in top 10 or thereabouts.

Sure why not. Genres change. I mean, for example, the 'novel' isn't novel anymore is it? Some people just take a novel for granted as any fiction book. Even some modern car racing games have you control an undercover cop or whatever, all of them RPGs by definition, strangely. But, having said that, you wouldn't categorise them as RPGs because that would be a rubbish way of explaining the game, just as you wouldn't say FFVI is an action game despite there being action throughout.

On a general note, I like RPGs that ask very little from me but offer a lot. It's a simple as that. The first two Fallout games and FFT just ask too much, and Oblivion and FFX offer too little. Deus Ex gets it just right.

Dangit, I can't disagree with that. For some reason, every list I've seen has Super Metroid, Link to the Past and FFVI as the top SNES games. It definitely deserves to be in that top Pantheon.

I also agree that it is an RPG, perhaps even more of an RPG than FFVI actually. I just feel the story in VI is superior, but that's just personal preference.

But seriously, you and sweetdude found Fallout 3 boring? That's.... umm, interesting. Maybe you're right sweetdude, that game may take a lot of patience, especially at the beginning. But after that, I felt like I was inside that crazy universe.

This might be a tad old for some of u viewers, But I think The Elderscrolls: Daggerfall Was by far the best RPG I ever played. It was the first rpg that I ever played of it's time that was completely open-ended. Although buggy it was an awsome game

I'm glad somebody mentioned Fallout.

I recently played Fallout 3 for a significant period of time, and I have to say I was extremely impressed. The mechanics, the leveling, the questing. All of it was great and definitely pure Bethesda. It was definitely one of the better RPG's I've gotten my hands on recently, if not ever.
